The Flood / Writing Thread Update
« on: March 27, 2016, 12:32:24 PM »
I again would like to know if anyone's working on writing currently, whether you're persisting on a project, doing something for school, or anything in between really.

The only thing I'm writing right now is a master plan for my undergraduate degree and emails for professors I'm interested in. It's actually really fun. I really enjoy exploring new ideas and fitting them together into cohesive strategies, apparently.

The Flood / Times You've Been Rused by Other Members
« on: March 19, 2016, 06:11:51 PM »
There was a favorite posters thread a while back and I did not know about the function linking someone back to their member page, so for about a week I thought I was Verbatim's favorite poster. I was also pretty skeptical, though. I didn't really see any reasons for him to like me.

Also my iPod's writing suggestions has verbatim (with a capital V) saved, on a related note.

The Flood / I need weeb help
« on: March 12, 2016, 07:16:00 PM »
My friend and I are going to watch anime all day tomorrow.
I need some suggestions for shows that aren't longer than 25 eps.

12 ep length is ideal

I'll update the OP with things I've seen when people mention them.

Thanks in advance.

Things either I or my friend has already seen:

The Devil is a part-timer
Baccano!
FLCL (though I saw it around 4 years ago, so we're considering it) (though we both love this one)
Psycho Pass S1 and 2
One Punch Man (and it's glorious)
Penguindrum
Samurai Champloo
Angel beats
Zankyou no Terror

Aaaaaaaand false alarm I suppose. My friend "has" to do something with their family today, so we apparently can't.
Guess today's more of a solo day.
We can still talk about anime though.

I remember being much more liable to give up when things were really starting to get challenging.
Things are still challenging, but the way I deal with them is much different. I'm a much more resilient person overall.

Well, what about you?

The Flood / Who Else Has This Happen?
« on: November 06, 2015, 08:33:23 PM »
When I wake up but am too tired to really get up, I can think a lot more clearly than when I'm fully awake.
Why is this?

And why?

Spoiler
30 and because after I played Skyrim for around a month of my life I realized I should probably spend it achieving things.
It's now my landmark for this site too.

Would you like to change that if you are?

I'm working on mine, trying to sit straighter everywhere. It's actually not that hard.

The Flood / Special quirks about pets
« on: November 02, 2015, 12:39:12 AM »
One of the cats in my home was hit by a car and managed to make a full recovery.
They also let me rub their belly instead of shredding my hand to pieces so that's pretty cool.

The Flood / What are your sleeping accomodations?
« on: November 01, 2015, 10:05:51 PM »
I use a sleeping bag instead of blankets and no pillows.
One day I just stopped sleeping in my bed and made a floor pallet out of blankets. Then I got a futon and slept on that for a few years. Now I just use a sleeping bag on my floor. I can't go back to beds.

It's between the wall and my bookcase. It's a tight space, but I enjoy it.

The Flood / Share The Funniest Part of Your Day
« on: October 29, 2015, 12:07:46 AM »
Today I was in Intro to Japanese Civilization and the professor was lecturing on Kabuki theater and the men who played women (onagatta) on stage and were thought to embody feminine ideals better than "real" women.

As I'm sitting in the front and scribbling away at my notepad I hear from the back of the room,  "So is this where traps come from?"
I shit you not, these were that person's words, and everyone in the room did the Picard simultaneously.
There have been few occasions where I required greater self-composure.

What's/who your favorite:
Movie (and why)
Musical track(s)
Character design
Character
Movie Setting

I like Princess Mononoke essentially for nostalgia's sake. It's also why Kiki's Delivery Service ranks high (though I recently rewatched Castle in the Sky and it might take Kiki's spot). The grandiose sense of setting was also pretty awe-inspiring as a kid in addition to the action and supernatural stuff.

I actually also like this movie but was disappointed by the resolution. This is still a great song though.
YouTube

This isn't the soundtrack version I have downloaded, but I really like this song because it makes me feel awe.
YouTube

I thought this was beautiful when I was little, and I still think so.
YouTube

I like it.

Character design

I think this sufficiently explains it

Character
He's the sassy, sarcastic cat we all need in our lives

Setting
The ocean train-station in Sprited Away

Also, look at these shoes. Aren't they adorable?

The Flood / Goal of the Week Thread
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:11:15 AM »
Post a list tier of things you'd like to get done this week in theory from least to most challenging using a D to S scale (or SS if you really need another tier).
Then update with the things you actually manage to do throughout the week. You can have as many items in each tier as you want and you don't have to do them all.

Take a picture representing your greatest goal proof of effort and post it here.

At the end of the week I'll look through the thread and decide a "winner," who will receive some sort of prize. I'm open to reward suggestions, but I'm not likely giving out cash prizes or spending money. Be creative with what you'd want as a reward (or don't, it makes my life easier).

My List
D:
-Language decision made
-First 100 shorthand code symbols memorized
C:
-Get ahead in current classes (one week)
-Dream Notes Compiled
-Finish Science and Sanity
-Complete semester work in extra courses
-Verbal structure in shorthand code
B:
-Research hypnagogia induction
-Lucidity catalysts cataloged
-Senescence topic survey complete
A:
-Found Optimal Transfer University
-Story theme essays complete
-Compile FC general notes
-Reevaluate prior lucidity theories
S:
-Devise FC for Anatomy
-Devise FC for Mathematics
-Devise FC for Gerontology
-Devise FC for Programming
-University Transfer Planned
SS:
-Devise nascent FC framework
-Story Plan Complete
I'll honestly be surprised if I do anything on this list for this week. Some of the stuff on here is way beyond me currently (anything with the designation 'FC' for "Functional Curriculum."

This is also a thread for collaboration on achieving goals or just posting interesting videos for general discussion (I'll find some when I wake up and after I write more papers  :-\)

If no one's interested I'll just be moving forward with updating the OP every once in a while.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention another rule:
I can't win the thread so I must choose someone in the thread and negotiate a request.

Towards the end of day 1
I've done jack shit today, almost completely unmotivated to do anything. So much...irony.
I'm considering staying up all night to finish what is now late work. Sunnuvabitch. I hope everyone else is getting along with their shit better than me.

End of Day... 5?
So this entire week I hadn't really don anything important/useful on the list, but today I've nearly completed finishing all of next week's assignments. I'm actually surprised how much I can get done if I focus at it.
The bad thing about this is that since I know I can work like this now I'll want to make it the new standard.

Also tomorrow is Halloween and I'll be taking a break from extra work until Sunday (the whole getting ahead by one week is actually to open up time for completing extra work during the week and through part of this weekend. I anticipate spending a large amount of time tomorrow writing poetry and figuring out precisely what I need to do to start expanding faster than I've ever done.
It's kind of exciting, honestly.

The Flood / Are You Guilty of This?

Sometimes someone responds to one of your posts and you don't know how to answer it (though you want to), so you put it off... and end up never answering it?

If yes, I challenge you to respond to one of those posts and repost it here.

You guys can also suggest things we might commonly do, yet regret nonetheless.

Mine

In one of my classes I'm learning about 90s Japan trendy dramas and this is one of the subjects broached.

The author Lukács argues that consumer investment in media culture valuates abstract commodities. In the context of the book she discusses image commodification as exemplified by Japanese tarento [popular, transmedial idols], who are used to sell lifestyles. Lifestyles are displayed through advertised goods and fashion trends, appealing to the viewer as a way to identify with lifestyles and through consumerism express their identity.

one could argue that the nature of advertisement is built upon the memetic expression of identity itself, which in theory would aspire the socially successful.
In a consumerist context I can see this, and the latter part of your sentence is something she evokes in the book. The ability to decode "transmedial" (seeing characters appearing across commercials, shows, game-shows, etc.) messages (though I'd argue this isn't necessarily exclusive to "transmedial" tv experiences) lends to another type of social capital in media culture (or even in pop culture, I'd argue)  which stratifies people because of their greater resources of media knowledge. It's that person you know who watches a lot of shows and makes recommendations, they have more influence over your watching decisions than someone who's new to the type of tv genre and doesn't understand the media conventions (style, themes, characters, etc.).

The Flood / Who's The Weirdest Person Who's Ever Stayed At Your House?
« on: October 17, 2015, 03:52:50 AM »
So before my hiatus I shared the little gem of information that my sister had acquired a new boyfriend hours after her breakup with the one prior. Well, he's homeless, and he's been living with us ever since.
He has really weird opinions. I've heard remarks that "There's a reason the Europeans thought they [Asians] were devils," name a "New Age" belief and I can confirm that he believes it.
I can't name all the times he makes up things in the moment and then instantly believes them. This is one of the weirdest things I've ever encountered about someone.

When I was a kid there was someone weirder. Let's call him "Mark" (like the ones you say hi to). Mark worked for my dad and was with my dad's side of the family for a few years, during which I had no idea what Mark actually did with him. Then one day I remember playing at a local park after dark and Mark was there crying and babbling about his hands. Later I came to hear that my dad either intended to or did cut off his fingers. After a while Mark just disappeared. I still don't know what he did with my dad or where he went. It's always eerie thinking about it.

Gaming / Which Game Rating Destroyed Your Faith in Published Reviews?
« on: October 17, 2015, 02:08:43 AM »
Fable III
Xbox 360 Metacritic score (critic): 80
Game Informer: 90
IGN: 85

The user reviews were much more in line with my reception of it (6.5).
The only part of that game I liked was the curveball second part of the game, but they even managed to mess that up.
And then I knew... even polemic shows like Zeropunctuation can be more accurate than "general consensus."

The Flood / AMA You Know...
« on: October 13, 2015, 10:08:46 PM »
I've only made an AMA once on one of my birthdays... And someone called me out for ruining the forum with attention whoring.

Then posted an AMA not half a year later >:(

So I think I'll try this again.
And I might reciprocate questions if I feel like it.

The Flood / Quick Question
« on: October 13, 2015, 07:51:54 PM »
When people make threads with post responses incorporating external media, do you avoid posting on topic because of the effort, or because it just isn't appealing?

Mostly the latter, but a little bit of the former (especially when I have a perfect image in mind that I can't find).

The Flood / Planning Methods (Writing)
« on: October 13, 2015, 02:05:44 PM »
How do you plan writing, writers?

I need a comprehensive plan to do anything, otherwise I'll spend hours making a few text lines and toying around with more and more abstract/nebulous concepts. I'll get nowhere.

So what do you start with first?
I came up with my general planning process (from working on a book idea):
Themes -> Characters and World -> Plot -> Scenes

Without this approach I was always lost confusing myself with how I'd order story aspects.
Though it's better than before, the thematic process is the most difficult and important job of planning.
For the story I want to write I'll be making arguments, and to fit all the things I want to ultimately discuss I've decided personal essays are the best way to elucidate my ideas and adapt them to fit into the story.

Does anyone use different methods of planning?
Is my method convoluted where simplicity would suffice? If so, where?

The Flood / NSFW Things You've Learned From Dreams (also a question about consent)
« on: October 13, 2015, 01:05:16 PM »
I'm apparently willing to do strange things for money. I distinctly recall one gentleman by the name of Mr. Swift desiring anal from me. While I wasn't keen of performing such an act he had a lot of money, so I endeavored to expand my discomfort zone (if you catch my meaning).

We were on a train, but at the last minute he pulls out a bag of thick, knobby sausages  and wanted me to masturbate with them. I'm very uncomfortable, but not wanting to forgo the money I accepted one of the greasy schlongs and prepared to penetrate my pooper. Mr. Swift leered over me, staring into my chasm. I, starting to feel palpable distress, actually woke myself up from sheer terror.

I was never so glad to wake up as I did then. The dream made me feel disturbed and filthy, but I also considered my consent in the situation. Though I consented verbally, personally I was uncomfortable, to the point whether I questioned if it was really consent after all. After all, people can use things to leverage sex (like money or status).

What do you think?
What did you learn in dream land?
Has anyone been raped in a dream?

The Flood / hot or cold food?
« on: October 13, 2015, 12:07:39 PM »
Which do you prefer?

I like cold and uncooked things. If I could eat meat raw I'd go at my steaks like a wolf.
It's one reason I like sushi.

Although throughout a multi-meal course I like temperature fluctuation between dishes. Is that weird?

The Flood / Share your current writing
« on: October 13, 2015, 11:08:17 AM »
Post things you're working on currently.
Do what you want (critique, comment, compare, etc.)

I'm working on a couple of poems for one of my classes
Pig's Jade
Their skulls shine like jade in pig troughs.
The day prior, those pigs priced the heads prior,
fire in green pea-eyed want burned through jade teeth
and feast on a back-wall sign, "Pig's Jade!"
Staid pig teeth showed a jaded pig face.

On the pig lot, shops in packed heat
feat their pig feet, hooves of fine white
Writhe under "Jade's" green sheets.
Worms felt the dead shine from twelve feet
while all the pigs see is Jade,
Jade chain-links in green sheets

They're wry-things in self need.
Greed, the mulch-man's fire, a green
sheen in skulls light the shelves,
themselves in death only through jade seen
Keen they might if they would hear their own screams.
