The Flood / Re: Opinion on LARP?
« on: March 13, 2016, 06:39:26 PM »
If you're really that dissatisfied with your life that you want to go to a convention and pretend to be someone else, you might as well kill yourself

You're already dead inside
LARPing isn't necessarily done at conventions, but yes the entire point of a Role Playing Game is to take on a different persona.

I mean
That's cool if you wanna pretend to be Wolverine and go around smashing shit every once in a while

But if you take the time to craft a persona with costumes and shit, that's weird
I've never really considered it odd to adopt new mannerisms when a situation asks for it, but that's a different situation than RPing in a conventional way. The only RPing I've done is in D&D campaigns. Perhaps that still makes me weird in your eyes.
I can see where you're coming from, though

But it's a situation you yourself create to out of some mental dissatisfaction with your own life
This assumption is incorrect.
There's utility in using different personas to get what you want.

Well there has to be some mental dissonance if you derive pleasure from escaping your life and entering someone else's

And I'm talking about LARPing

Board games and video games are different because you're placing yourself in a situation to see what you would do or exploring what a character would do in that situation
Whereas LARPing is trying to become someone else

At least that's how I see it

Can you really blame them though?

We live largely in a society that makes life shit. It's no wonder there's so much lean towards escapism nowadays.

Well I mean
Yes you can blame them lol

If you want to make your life better, make it better
You are completely free to do so

Yeah, see, that's the thing. Our generation wasn't exactly brought up with the notion of living to be happy, or doing what makes us happy as the forefront of our concern.

The primary life goal pushed was getting a job/degree, and making money. Our generation wasn't instilled with any sort of backbone to stand up for themselves. Nor were they ever taught how.

I can't blame people for something they're foreign to.

No
Being happy has always been what parents wanted for their children

It's just how to get there that has changed

Today, children are told that they can do whatever they want, say whatever they want to say and anyone who tells them otherwise is immediately ostracized and labeled a hater

They're raised in an environment that tells them "your feelings matter"
And they are given unearned praised and dissolved of any responsibility

So it no longer becomes a matter of doing something to change your own situation
It becomes a matter of changing everything else around you so that your situation sucks less

Is it just a drama about 3 niggas in a bunker?

No. It has aliens.

Do they spend most of the bunker outside the bunker?

I thought Death Grips was over?
They just said that to fuck with people's heads, which is their MO
Didn't they abruptly cancel their tours when they originally announced the end of the project?

I think they really did mean to break up
But ego and success made them change their mind

I do not LARP. My friends and I have whacked each other with foam weapons, but no campaigning was involved.
The notion that people can explore a character in a videogame and be 'normal' yet not do the same in reality without suddenly becoming 'abnormal' makes no sense to me. They're both exercises in escapism and promote a space where you dissociate from your regular life.

Because in games, you're exploring other characters or wondering how you would handle a certain situation
Which is perfectly healthy
Hypothetical situations are always healthy to play out

Whereas LARPers, to my knowledge, take it to the point of self delusion
They do it specially to get out of their own mind

Quote
Usually pleasure has nothing to do with adopting new mannerisms or behavior, it's something I decide to do by necessity. The entire idea of "entering someone else's life" does not apply here either. I just emulate characteristics I think will be effective in a particular situation. Rather than promoting escapism I'm trying to find effective ways to deal with real situations.

This isn't LAPRing

Because a lot of the new stuff is wearing down.
