Hand guards on a real sword don't cut your hand off if you brush against them.
Usually a light saber is going up against another light saber so a normal piece of metal is going to be useless for a guard.
The point of a cross guard is to protect the user from accidentally slipping their hand onto their own blade, not defend against another one.
