The Flood / Re: There's like four crossdressers on my campus
« on: September 30, 2015, 01:03:17 PM »
Cross-dressers are all over the place here at Umass.

It's not atypical, it's experiencing the broad range of people that exist in the world.
It's pretty goddamn atypical. Say what you want about whether it's good or not (it's not), but it's certainly not the norm.
I was telling you that it's not atypical to see cross-dressers at universities.

Do people actually pronounce "Tortilla" with the "L"s?

"Tor-tee-ya" is correct, and I've never heard anyone, white or otherwise, say it differently.

I'll admit that the Forerunner Trilogy is a well written and well thought-out piece of work. It's just not a story I ever wanted to read.
It doesn't help that practically everything about Halo's lore strongly suggested that we were the descendants of Forerunners. Hell, Spark literally tells us that we are. Yeah, you can retcon the line and spin it differently so that when he says Chief is a "Child of his makers," you can argue he means "Their heir," but that's definitely not what it was originally meant to convey.

Gravemind (in H3) calls chief "Child of my enemy."
THAT TOO

What if we came from Mars?

That doesn't make much sense. Like, at all.

The only way that would be possible is if some civilisation had the technology to launch spacecraft - and there are literally zero signs of any kind of life having existed, much less intelligent life.
No, there's a theoretical process called panspermia that would permit life from on planet to be transferred to another.

I think they're purposefully filling the fans heads with the idea that he's dead as part of the propaganda-style marketing scheme they've seemed to go with. No way they'd let that slip by in the video unintentionally

Fuck the background story of the Forerunners and humans.

I wanted us to be their descendants, not their ancient enemy.

Verb you should review Halo 2.

I'd be curious to see how you'd compare Halo CE's nonexistent narrative with Halo 2's, uh, actual narrative.

1. The largest known star, by volume, is UY Scuti, which has a diameter roughly 1,708 times that of the Sun. If placed in the center of our Solar System, it's surface would likely extend to or beyond the orbital radius of Saturn.
I could have swore that statistic  belonged to VY Canis Majoris unless its changed recently
It changed recently, yes. There's also a degree of uncertainty about the diameter of the largest-known stars, because discerning their actual size is very difficult. Many of them are surrounded by enormous planetary nebulas that make measuring their exact radius really hard. UY Scuti currently holds the record though.

At first it was VY CMA, then it was NML Cygni, then it was UY Scuti. The upper and lower estimates for each of their sizes overlap quite a bit.

The point is, they're fucking huge.

To clarify your original post, we've known water was on Mars for a very long time. However, we were all under the impression it would only exist in the form of ice. The recent discovery marks humanity's first confirmation of liquid water on another terrestrial planet. There are several other bodies in the solar system where liquid water is abundant, though.

Europa and Ganymede, two of the largest moons of Jupiter, both have subterranean oceans beneath their icy crusts, as confirmed these past years through various different detection methods. Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, was also confirmed to have a liquid water ocean underneath its surface this past year.

More space facts, because that's what I do:

1. The largest known star, by volume, is UY Scuti, which has a diameter roughly 1,708 times that of the Sun. If placed in the center of our Solar System, it's surface would likely extend to or beyond the orbital radius of Saturn.

2. Uranus' magnetic poles are off-center, meaning the do not go through the core of the planet.

3. If you jumped into a black hole, you'd fucking die.

Shaping up to be the best year of my life.

Doing great my first year at college so far, I have a girlfriend I love very much, and a lot of great social opportunities I've acted on since coming to Umass. I love my job, I love where I live, and I love where I am now.

Cool uhm just I thought the prescence of ice was already established (which sort of implies liquid water's presence).
Mars has carbon dioxide ice
Like Fruit said, the poles are mostly composed of water ice. There is dry ice there, though.

If we lived close to each other, I'm venturing to say we'd probably get along extraordinarily well. You have basically the exact same mannerisms and basic sense of interest that I do. The only other person who I can generally talk about these sorts of things with is my cousin, and that's primarily because I just copied everything he did when I was younger, so I'm a clone of him. Just a random thought; it is disappointing how difficult it is to find people interested in these sorts of things.

I agree with this review in its entirety.

Halo CE has aged horrifically. It's a snorefest to me.

Now Halo 2, on the other hand...

Ice does not imply liquid water.

Many moons in the solar system are largely composed of ice, but are still completely frozen, dead worlds.

In retrospect, I probably should've had my cousin drive me up to the observatory (The astronomy club is doing an open-house at it for the eclipse). Not sure why I didn't.

Probably laze.
You should've done it. I went to the astronomy club meeting and 50-100 people were there. Really great to talk to others with similar interests or discussing other stuff
I'm an Astronomy major, which makes this more embarrassing >.>
