Serious / Re: SQS: "It doesn't affect me, so I don't care."
« on: November 15, 2015, 11:00:23 AM »
This is a difficult question to answer, because what qualifies as "Affecting" somebody varies from person-to-person. For me, just because I'm not directly impacted by something, doesn't mean I don't consider it having an effect on me. Generally, I don't believe apathy towards something terrible going on in the world is a smart or moral way to think.

Can't deny this generated plenty of discussion, I don't think locking it is really the best idea
This isn't discussion.

This is absolute madness

It's not my job to represent someone else in an argument. That's not what this thread is about. I just want to talk to people about the issue and why they believe or disbelieve Islam is the cause of violence. Does anyone just want to offer their analyses or sources on both sides of the argument?

I thought you were done talking about that discussion over at Bungleboards.

Hmmmm

Guess it's not fun when someone brings more knowledge to the table as you do and is the opposing argument.
whatchoo talkin bout
This discussion just got over with on Bungle.

Mostly Pyro vs. me

I lost the argument, easily. He's saying that because I lost it there, I'm just trying to bring it here so I can get more people on my side, but that's not what's happening. I want to discuss it, because I don't really know how I feel.
What did he say
I don't feel like anybody has the right to explain someone else's argument besides themselves.
What's his fucking stance
Islam isn't a violent religion, it's the region of the world and what's happened to it that causes all of the hatred and violence. Religion is just the scapegoat.

The final book of the Qur'an is rife with violence, which many think contradicts the core values of any abrahamic faith...
Islam has a very clear rule about contradictions though. Whatever was written last is the law and the final word of God.
Where does it say that?

I'm all for continuing the discussion with new people, and considering my views changed because of that argument, it's a smart thing to do. I already know what people are going to say on Bungle; I know what their views are. I don't know a lot of the views of people here, though, and think that discussing it is one of the best ways I'll be able to refine my views on it and get more informed.

Does it have elements in its doctrine that encourage violence?

Is it predisposed to encourage oppression and conflict?

Is it just a matter of the region of the world that extremism is predominant?

What makes Islamic terrorism more prominent than other forms of religious terrorism?

I'm trying to learn more about this question in light of the Paris attacks, and I don't want to be on the wrong side of the debate. I don't know exactly what to believe, but I can't ignore the amount of violence that seems to be done in the name of the Islamic religion. What exactly is going on here?

I kind of want to make a thread asking about whether or not Islam is a violent religion, but I don't know if that'd be in good taste. I feel like people would just shit on each other.

The Flood / Re: How do you feel about the France attacks?

I'm becoming increasingly more negative towards the Islamic religion.

Not the people, the religion.

What are actual, good sources of information on the debate between whether or not Islam is more violent than other religions?

I mean it should be noted the Old Testament of the Bible had a lot of text that advocated violence.
I know that.

It's not like I'm specifically worried about bad teachings in religious texts. I don't like any religion, really. But Islam seems to be the most predisposed towards violence, and I'm wondering why.

What exactly is it about Islam that makes it seem so more prone to violence? I'm only recently starting to consider the possibility that it's actually not just the crazy people, it's part of the doctrine.

Hello.
Are you connected to these vicious attacks?
No, I'm of Middle Eastern heritage so they're joking about me being Jihadi John
Hopefully you know I was kidding, but oh, that explains it.

The Flood / Re: Anyone else who wouldn't care if all Muslims died?
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:53:29 PM »
I definitely wouldn't want that to happen.

Religion is poison, especially Islam, but I'm not going to pretend for a second that it would be justified to kill billions of innocent people. There's a massive difference between the two ends of the spectrum, but that doesn't mean I don't think that what they believe in is fundamentally stupid and dangerous.
