The Flood / First world problems >: (

My tea is about 2 degrees on the wrong side of hot ;_;
The mug is still hot but the tea is now approaching lukewarm.

Post your first world problems ITT, but I doubt any are quite as heartrending as an englishman with a tepid cup of tea.

Why the fuck are my eyes tearing up as well, it's just so sad ;_;

This is too good.

Spoiler
Four male college students at the North Carolina State University are developing a new kind of nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date-rape drugs, like GHB and Rohypnol.

The goal of their company, Undercover Colors, is "to invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves," specifically against sexual assault, they said on their Facebook Page.

"With our nail polish, any woman will be empowered to discreetly ensure her safety by simply stirring her drink with her finger," they said. "If her nail polish changes colour, she'll know that something is wrong."

Undercover Colors initially garnered praise, with hundreds of thousands of likes and shares across Facebook and Twitter.

"There are already bulky devices that can be used to test drinks for date rape drugs," writes Adam Clark Estes for Gizmodo .

"But it's not necessarily easy to carry these things around on a night out and whip them out at bars."

However, the inevitable internet backlash came from a surprising source - anti-rape advocates.
Tweet: Rape prevention nail polish sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure how you're going to get men to wear it. (@andreagrimes)

"I'm appreciative that young men like want to curb sexual assault, but anything that puts the onus on women to 'discreetly' keep from being raped misses the point," writes Jessica Valenti for the Guardian.

"We should be trying to stop rape, not just individually avoid it."

Valenti argues that promoting products like Undercover Colors is not only ineffective, but also can lead to "victim-blaming," if women don't take all the suggested precautions.
Tweet: How about women don't have to wear a special nail polish and dunk thier fingers in every cocktail not to get raped (@lindywest)

"Women are already expected to work hard to prevent themselves from becoming the victims of sexual assault," writes Tara Culp-Ressler for Think Progress.

"Now, remembering to put on anti-rape nail polish and discreetly slip a finger into each drink might be added to that ever-growing checklist-something that actually reinforces a pervasive rape culture in our society."

Additionally, date-rape drugs are not necessarily a factor in the majority of sexual assaults as much as alcohol.
Tweet: This new nail polish that can detect the date rape drug is great if you think women aren't trying hard enough not to get raped. (@kellyoxford)

Writing for Jezebel, Erin Gloria Ryan says that improving education around sexual assault could prove more beneficial than colour-changing manicures.

"Teach men that having sex with women too incapacitated to consent is rape," she writes.

I've embedded the whole article and the pics/tweets in the spoiler so you don't have to go to the site.

The tl;dr is that 4 students invent a nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date rape drugs, the idea being that women can discreetly check their drink for anything untoward. Then the Tumblr harpies start on about how rather than this being a good idea it's better to teach men not to rape.

I mean, it's not like every human on the planet has to be taught that rape is bad is it? That just generally goes without saying. Same with Murder or Arson, telling everyone again and again that it's bad isn't going to stop it from happening ._.

The Flood / Fish adapt to walk on land more efficiently.
« on: August 27, 2014, 12:56:27 PM »
It's actually fairly amusing that on the same day of discussion how science labs could or couldn't disprove god's existence that these canadians have studied lungfish and watched them adapt to walk on land more efficiently.

Silly bait aside <.<

Here are some articles.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/27/6074855/this-is-what-happens-when-you-raise-fish-to-walk-on-land

The tl;dr for the lazy or those who dun speek biology.

The fish not only adapted by walking in a different manner but they displayed plasticity (Ability to change) in their 'shoulder' joints in a similar manner to the first fish that walked on land millions of years ago.

It's pretty interesting stuff.

Ave Deus Mechanicus

For those who don't worship the machine god, I'll put it simply.

This little robot is learning from the internet rather than from what programmers teach it directly, sure it opens up a lot of avenues for bullshit and I expect we'll see some funny things arise from this <.<
But it's really quite impressive that it's now teaching itself, and then supposedly being able to pass on that knowledge to other robots, from the internet.

Maybe that joke of there being a functional AI by 2018 won't be such a joke after all >.>

A super-intelligent robotic "brain" that can learn new skills by browsing millions of web pages has been developed by US researchers.

Robo Brain is designed to acquire a vast range of skills and knowledge from publicly available information sources such as YouTube.

The information it learns can then be accessed by robots around the world, helping them to perform everyday tasks.

A similar project is already being developed in Europe.

RoboEarth, described as a world wide web for robots, was demonstrated by researchers at Eindhoven University in the Netherlands in January.

Like Robo Brain, it aims to become a global repository for information that can be accessed by other robots.

But unlike RoboEarth, Robo Brain is able to build up its own understanding from the information it gets from the internet, rather than being programmed by humans.
Microwaves and umbrellas

The project is the result of a collaboration between the US universities of Cornell, Brown, Stanford and California, and has support from companies including Google and Microsoft.

Robo Brain began digesting information from the internet last month.

The researchers say it is sifting through about a billion images, 120,000 YouTube videos and 100 million how-to documents and appliance manuals.

A website for the project has been set up, detailing some of the knowledge it has acquired.

If a robot encounters a situation it hasn't seen before, it can query Robo Brain in the cloud”

Ashutosh Saxena Assistant professor of computer science, Cornell University

This includes the ability to recognise chairs, and understand how items such as microwaves and umbrellas are used.

The researchers say Robo Brain is not just capable of recognising objects, but of understanding how they are used, as well as more complex concepts - including human language and behaviour.

For example, it can recognise objects such as mugs, and understand what a mug is used for and how it is carried.

It is also able to recognise when someone is watching television, and knows not to get in the way.

Ashutosh Saxena, of Cornell University, one of the researchers behind the project, said the idea was to create a huge repository of information that robots could call on to perform tasks around the house or at work.

"If a robot encounters a situation it hasn't seen before, it can query Robo Brain in the cloud," he said.

Experts believe robots may be available in homes within 10 years, with robot vacuum cleaners and lawnmowers among the devices already available.

More humanoid robots, able to assist disabled or elderly people, are now being developed.

Researchers are increasingly looking to develop central repository stores of information to power these robots.

The Flood / Psychiatric Help 5¢ [The Regressioning]
« on: August 24, 2014, 06:57:37 PM »

A while ago I made a joke thread on B.notquitesoshityet where I offered bullshit psychiatric advice and diagnosis for free <.<

Welp, I'm bored so here is Mark II. The Regressioning.

Making the same thread again would be boring so I'm adding some options for what type and dose of bullshittery you'd like.

So let's get this started.
Here is a short questionnaire/options list for you to chose from <.<

The Flood / Victory is mine.
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:27:46 PM »
Last night when I was in the loo, I got interrupted/rushed by Shelob the fucking spider. It came under the door and charged me because hey, why the fuck not.

So I managed to do some matrix style acrobatics to leap into the bath .-.
(I hadn't actually... 'gone' if you catch the meaning.)

So that little bastard left me bursting for the loo all night after I failed to kill it and it ran under the toilet.

BUT TONIGHT, VICTORY IS MINE.

I caught the little shit while it was on the radiator with a flyswatter, splattered the fucker and finished the job when it was on the ground. I don't normally kill spiders with glee and I usually take them outside but this was personal. And it was one of those god damn quick house spiders.

So yeah, I splattered that bastard and flushed his remains away.

Victory is mine and I can now visit the loo in peace ._.

Sorry for the shitpost/blog/tldr/waaaah but victory tastes sweet

The Flood / To clarify what happened yesterday.
« on: July 28, 2014, 11:06:34 AM »
EDIT: Alrighty, I've requested the lock. Game ogre chaps, PM me if you still have any questions from now on. No more talk of this on the mains from me.
/EDIT.
Alrighty, so since everyone seems to half know what went on over the course of the weekend and because I'm getting a little annoyed by the half explanations and confusion over what went on, I want to bury this shit once and for all.

Everyone who has been on the forums for the last while will know that Comms had been taunting/winding up Kinder and Noelle, That's not exactly a secret. Kinder kept on feeding him over and over and over again and that's what let all this stupidity happen.

The offsite forum was nuked, in part by Comms. thejester or something like that, was him pretending to be Kinder. Some people seem to think I knew about this as it happened/before hand, Comms had been hinting towards some sort of daft plan to nuke the forums and I asked him not to. Then all hell broke loose overnight. The forums went into flame mode and then Proboards nuked it, this stuff you all know.

The bit I want to clarify is what went on afterwards, Comms had done a running commentary on his 'mischief' to me via PM, I couldn't believe he'd actually pulled it off and it had bloody worked. The flood was out for Kinder and Noelle's blood over it and it was pretty... 'Well shit'. As a rule of thumb, I don't just blab about PMs to any old bugger I meet and I was chewing over what to do when in a group chat on Facebook - Kinder was getting mobbed by some other users. I stepped in and told them what had gone on, with the emphatic request that they keep their bloody mouths shut afterwards.

Then the second site went up, and things seemed to be alright for a bit. Someone, I don't know who - Reported the forum out of spite and got it nuked again. One thing that someone on here brought up was me being a Mod on there, yes Kiyo made me a moderator for the politics/religion forum but the whole board was nuked about an hour later anyway. That's not really pertinent to this whole thing, but I wanted to clear it up anyway. I don't want to be a moderator on this site, mostly because I'm fucking sick of all the childish squabbling over this crap.

Then later in the evening Kinder half posted a stupid thread in here with excerpts from the PM that I had shared, specifically to stop him from getting chewed out by everyone else. So thanks kinder, you half arsed it and buggered it up and now I've had to write the bloody great wall of china to finish this shit once and for all.

tl;dr/Salient points go here.
1. I tried to resolve some of the problem between users that I consider to be good friends, on all sides of this clusterfuck. This involved divulging a PM with Comms Officer, something I was particularly unhappy about doing but I was trying to sort things out for Kinder.
2. My attempt to fix that shit was completely unrelated to being a moderator on the second site, all of this was done on Skpe, Facebook or in PMs on various sites.
3. I tried to keep this neutral and to fix it quickly and tidily as best as I could, simply because watching a large group of friends or aquaintances descend into screaming matches over something they didn't have the explanation to and I did. But the actions of a certain individual, to put it all bluntly - completely fucked it all up again and let to this thread.
4. I am sick to death of this crap and the reason I'm doing this stupidly long thread is to get it all done and buried afterwards. I don't want to be a moderator on here and I only accepted the role on the other site because it was for a sub-forum.

Right, bleugh.

inb4omgwhocares

inb4tl;dr

If you've got any questions you want answering, then ask. I'll give you the straightforward answers and then I want to get rid of this thread. Hopefully this will answer all the confusion and bullshit flying around, if I don't know then I'll just say but I have the play by play of the whole damn thing courtesy of Comms, on top of what I saw firsthand.
