Serious / A nail polish to detect Rohypnol, SJWs commence their butthurt.« on: August 28, 2014, 10:13:11 AM »
This is too good.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-28958365 Spoiler Four male college students at the North Carolina State University are developing a new kind of nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date-rape drugs, like GHB and Rohypnol. The goal of their company, Undercover Colors, is "to invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves," specifically against sexual assault, they said on their Facebook Page. "With our nail polish, any woman will be empowered to discreetly ensure her safety by simply stirring her drink with her finger," they said. "If her nail polish changes colour, she'll know that something is wrong." Undercover Colors initially garnered praise, with hundreds of thousands of likes and shares across Facebook and Twitter. "There are already bulky devices that can be used to test drinks for date rape drugs," writes Adam Clark Estes for Gizmodo . "But it's not necessarily easy to carry these things around on a night out and whip them out at bars." However, the inevitable internet backlash came from a surprising source - anti-rape advocates. Tweet: Rape prevention nail polish sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure how you're going to get men to wear it. (@andreagrimes) "I'm appreciative that young men like want to curb sexual assault, but anything that puts the onus on women to 'discreetly' keep from being raped misses the point," writes Jessica Valenti for the Guardian. "We should be trying to stop rape, not just individually avoid it." Valenti argues that promoting products like Undercover Colors is not only ineffective, but also can lead to "victim-blaming," if women don't take all the suggested precautions. Tweet: How about women don't have to wear a special nail polish and dunk thier fingers in every cocktail not to get raped (@lindywest) "Women are already expected to work hard to prevent themselves from becoming the victims of sexual assault," writes Tara Culp-Ressler for Think Progress. "Now, remembering to put on anti-rape nail polish and discreetly slip a finger into each drink might be added to that ever-growing checklist-something that actually reinforces a pervasive rape culture in our society." Additionally, date-rape drugs are not necessarily a factor in the majority of sexual assaults as much as alcohol. Tweet: This new nail polish that can detect the date rape drug is great if you think women aren't trying hard enough not to get raped. (@kellyoxford) Writing for Jezebel, Erin Gloria Ryan says that improving education around sexual assault could prove more beneficial than colour-changing manicures. "Teach men that having sex with women too incapacitated to consent is rape," she writes. I've embedded the whole article and the pics/tweets in the spoiler so you don't have to go to the site. The tl;dr is that 4 students invent a nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date rape drugs, the idea being that women can discreetly check their drink for anything untoward. Then the Tumblr harpies start on about how rather than this being a good idea it's better to teach men not to rape. I mean, it's not like every human on the planet has to be taught that rape is bad is it? That just generally goes without saying. Same with Murder or Arson, telling everyone again and again that it's bad isn't going to stop it from happening ._. 16504

I'm genuinely interested to know how the fuck they can live with themselves.
They let 1400+ children suffer through hell because they were too chicken shit to tackle this problem. Now they are shuffling the blame off onto a PC culture. Yeah, no shit that PC culture is bollocks and contributed but it's their gross negligence that allowed this to happen. Seriously, what kind of disgusting gutter bastard would say to a child 'nah it's not our problem, who gives a shit?' or to say that it was 'consensual'. Fucking scum. 16510

Serious / Re: Well, Boris Johnson just destroyed our constitution in one swift blow« on: August 27, 2014, 04:21:59 PM »What? The OP made it seem much more militant than that. I can definitely agree with asking why people are traveling there in the first place, but I don't think it's necessary to arrest everyone who doesn't want to disclose that information. As long as you're not bringing home a bomb (which is incredibly easy to check), or obviously aiding terrorism, this seems like a situation where a few idiots are messing up the system for everyone. I think it did but it's also important to know that this is a column run by the mayor of london who is known for being a bit... loopy. This isn't actually being implemented and it's simply what he would like to happen. That being said, arresting everyone who's been to syria/iraq/the middle east is excessive to the point of retardation. Asking them to notify Customs/Borders that they are going out there beforehand will make it easier to keep tabs on them, which whilst it might not be ideal is far better than them simply being allowed to wander in and out of the Caliphate in the making. They of course wouldn't bring bombs back with them, but the knowledge of how to make/hide/operate them would be easy to bring through customs. If you know how to make explosives from household chemicals without googling it, then that has the potential to cause some serious damage. Even if only twenty of them come back like this, and the rest died. They could still kill hundreds with an attack in london and preventing that is important for the obvious reason and the less obvious reason. If yet another terrorist attack by muslims happens in the west, it's going to throw more and more support behind skinhead thugs who want to kill them all. I'd prefer it if the UK didn't end up being run by rightwing nutters (har har at the present government though) and people got along somewhat more easily. ._. 16515

Serious / Re: Well, Boris Johnson just destroyed our constitution in one swift blow« on: August 27, 2014, 03:55:49 PM »Because while it's true that anyone can be a terrorist, that applies to everything. Anyone can be a serial killer. Anyone can be a rapist. That doesn't mean that we have to assume that everyone is. Should more detail and suspicion be put onto people returning from those areas? Of course. Should they be automatically arrested, and presumed to be a terrorist? No, that's idiotic. The fact of the matter is that an extremely slim percentage of Brits going to those areas are actual ISIS supporters. The vast majority aren't terrorists. And that being said, there's far easier ways to combat British terrorist defectors than this method. It's not so much of an automatic arrest and presumption of guilt as a check on people going out there in the first place. If they are going out there with a good reason, all they have to do is state it and possibly provide evidence of their claim. This is exceptionally poor wording and possibly implementation but the reasoning behind it at least makes sense. 16518

Mhm, I'd rather that these fuckers all died over there but some will inevitably slip through the net. Presumption of guilt is a dangerous concept, no doubt about that. But when it's easily dispelled by registering/informing customs of your intent then it's not a big deal. If you are going to be all secretive about why you want to travel to a warzone, then it's just down right suspicious and the government would be failing in their duty to protect the citizens of their country if they simply let people go there willy nilly. It's not 'muh infringement of rights' when they introduce quarantine/scanners at airports for people who have visited a country with an ebola epidemic going on, it's common fucking sense. 16521

It's actually fairly amusing that on the same day of discussion how science labs could or couldn't disprove god's existence that these canadians have studied lungfish and watched them adapt to walk on land more efficiently.
Silly bait aside <.< Here are some articles. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/11059228/Fish-adapt-to-life-outside-water-by-learning-to-walk.html http://www.coastreporter.net/news/international/canadian-study-on-walking-fish-sheds-light-on-evolution-of-limbs-1.1331026 http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/27/6074855/this-is-what-happens-when-you-raise-fish-to-walk-on-land The tl;dr for the lazy or those who dun speek biology. The fish not only adapted by walking in a different manner but they displayed plasticity (Ability to change) in their 'shoulder' joints in a similar manner to the first fish that walked on land millions of years ago. It's pretty interesting stuff. 16523

At first glance it really looks bad, but can you think of a reason why you would go to syria at the moment?

The Flood / Re: God's Not Dead (movie) has some truth behind it« on: August 27, 2014, 10:02:28 AM »I would really like it if you reworded that. Yeah this is what happens when you post late at night after a long day <.< I basically had my foot in my mouth all night lol. Of course morality and ethics aren't solely derived from abrahamic religions, but the morals and ethics they teach are widely spread throughout the western populations. It''s hamstrung and hindered science for a long time with the phrase 'playing god'. I'm not exactly anti-religion, but I am of the mind to keep it the fuck out of science labs. Cloning was the example that half came to mind last night, the west has basically pussied out on it while China is (figuratively) screaming balls to the wall and cloning everything short of people. I expect they'll clone them soon enough as well. So whilst their lack of/different set of ethics (Mostly from Confucian thinking iirc) allows them to launch themselves forwards in areas like science, they are lacking the whole socialist humanitarian approach. Life is cheaper than food in China ._. Hopefully that's better <.< |
