Jormungand follows Koko, a Russian weapons dealer, and her band of well trained body guards, who consists of ex army veterans and spies. She travels around the world selling weapons for HCLI, a shipping company that secretly sells weapons, while avoiding government agencies. The story begins when Jonah, a child soldier, joins her crew in order to solve a few of his own problems. As they make their way through the world's arm trade, they end up confronting just about every foe possible.

Story

Jormungand is an anime that is packed with action without being too gritty and dark, though from time to time it can get fairly dark for its semi-light tone that it has for what it portrays. Unlike most action anime that revolve around the action and anything related with it, Jormungand is filled with plenty of moments of comedy from time to time, normally shown by character relationships. In this aspect it is different than most but contains enough of what a viewer would expect of a show full of guns, the arms trade, and overall action.

The plot of the show is not the primary focus of the anime, as every two to three episodes tells a story on its own,normally a mission per arc deal, with an over arching plot being present. The story goes on to tell of the kinds of deals that Koko and her friends are involved in. Which could range from transporting cargo through Iraq and engaging in combat with other soldiers, to getting in firefights within the middle of cities with assassins or military officers. The overall plot can be summed down to acquiring world peace, which is Koko's overall object in the story. The episodic nature of the anime works well, yet it feels as though more could have been achieved if the story was more prominent.

Which is rather contradictory, as a person normally does not go about achieving world peace through violence, which makes Koko a sort of an anti-hero. However the way Koko goes about doing it is rather genius not to mention risky and contradictory. Jormungand itself it a show driven by the characters, and with the large amount of characters that are presented and have an impact on the overall plot, its no surprise that the story tends to take a backseat for portions of the show.

A good portion of the show focuses on the relations that Koko and her squad have with each other and the adversaries that they face. Typically the relationships that Koko has with the agencies trying to manipulate and/or take her down. What makes the relationship with the agencies so interesting is that Koko neither tries to avoid them or take them down, depending on what they do. Rather she manipulates them into playing right into her hand in order to to either destroy them or use them for her plans.

The large issue some may have with this anime is that it takes the arm trade business and makes it appear like its not. Jormungand makes the entire business more fun than it actually is compared to the dark reality that it really is. Considering that the entire anime revolves around the arms trade, it seems to take it rather lightly, which may or may not, depending on the viewers expectations of the show be a bit of a disappointment or even an enhancement to the viewing experience. The other being that some of the arcs have connections to each other that are not even shown to exist until the very end, which lead to a feeling of disappointment at how much better the story would have been if the connections were actually stated in some way.

Considering the large cast of characters there is no point in going over them all. However there are several that should get attention as the story is very much character driven.

Koko Hekmatyar
Koko is a rather unique woman for her age and profession, charismatic and intelligent enough to fool her enemies into becoming her pawns, Koko has a bit of a messiah complex when it comes to her ideals and how she makes them a reality. She is a very cheerful character, even acting immature at times, though her cheery look is just a facade, in reality Koko never reveals her true emotions, in fear of scaring away here friends. Though later it becomes apparent that Koko is a megalomaniac in regards to how she goes about completing her plan of world peace.

At the beginning Koko comes off as a rather odd individual who does not fit in the role she is given, however as the story progresses viewers get to see that see is a mastermind that can predict everyone's move. At the same time its her very eccentricities that make her likeable, though this could very much be a double edge sword as she is not very believable as a character that is supposed to be a feared arms dealer. An the other side, her child like side can be a nice refresher in scenes where there is no action. Her motivations and her actions match but only due to her crazed rationality that she gives for her plans to bestowing world peace upon the world. Which only adds on to her fascinating personality.

Jonah Mar
Jonah is a child soldier who joins Koko's group and ironically hates guns as well as arms dealers due to his experiences with them. Quiet and mature for his age, Jonah is unlike most his age, not being bothered by killing others when necessary. However his age does show from time to time, showing that he isn't as emotionless as he first appears. Though he lacks any real knowledge when it comes to math, he is a perceptive individual, who sticks by Koko's side through thick and thin.

While it does seem odd that a child soldier be in a group of top body guards full of ex-soldiers, and while Jonah himself seems a bit out of place at first he does serve a purpose. He acts like a release valve for Koko, she teeters the line of becoming a monster but tries her hardest not to, that's where Jonah comes in. Jonah allows Koko to be her childish self and she loves showering him with physical affection. While Jonah's hatred for arms dealers and his actions are different, his motivation for doing being a part of Koko's troop is actually justified, as he wanted nothing more but the safety of his child friends, that he knew a long time ago.

George Black
Almost always referred to as Bookman, he always keeps calm is the a Chief in the CIA who runs operation Undershaft in order to use Koko as a pawn for the CIA. A former marine, he is a heavy eater and is rarely seen outside the show.

While Bookman only makes appearances on occasion, he is in fact the person behind some of the events in the story. Using numerous contacts and even spies in an elaborate scheme in order for the CIA to use Koko as they please. The major problem us that he makes too few appearances throughout both seasons, being the mastermind behind project Undershaft, more emphasis should have been placed on his influence over certain events.


Animation

The animation studio that worked on Jormungand was White fox, though they have not worked any many anime, they have done a few notable ones, such as Steins;Gate, Katanagatari, and Akame ga Kill. All of the firefights within the show are fluid and solid, while almost all the time appear realistic for gun fights, rather than people just running around shooting guns. Outside of the fight scenes the animation is solid and does its job when it needs too. Example below.

The soundtrack does a good job of pumping the fight scenes with more adrenaline, while providing the appropriate atmosphere to scenes outside of the action. However few songs actually stand out, one of them being the first opening of series.

Personal Enjoyment

Coming it this anime expecting a good action anime, Jormungand certainly delivered, the fight scenes where realistic and filled with action. The character interactions were entertaining on part of the comedy and whenever Koko was on the screen. It balanced action, story, and appropriate levels of comedy nicely and it was enjoyable.

Though the action was solid and the comedy was a nice refresher to the anime, the problem lies within  some of the characters themselves. While some of the characters get nice development and are fleshed out nicely, there others that aren't. Beyond Koko's crew, most characters that are introduced and have interesting personalities that are unlike the archetypes that appear in anime, lack proper development. They are simply introduced and appear where ever necessary in the plot, but rarely they get a decent back story, which is disappointing as Jormungand is a character driven show. Some of the more prominent antagonists, like Bookman, don't get sufficient screen time, while its said he pulls strings here and there for his plans, the show never really goes in depth into how he goes about it. Also if people come into Jormungand expecting another Black Lagoon, they might be pleased or disappointed.  Jormungand does not have the same dark tone as Black Lagoon and keeps lighter tone overall.

Personally I would have liked to have seen more character development, considering the show focuses on its characters, while its plot takes a back seat from time to time. The relationships between some of the characters certainly made the show much more interesting and remains one of the highlights and its weaknesses. As for the action scenes, I was hardly disappointed and enjoyed its more realistic take on firefights. A good watch for anyone looking for a action heavy anime with a wide cast of charming characters.

Steins; Gate that explores the concepts of time travel, parallel world lines, and the consequences involved with decisions made by altering the past and future. Taking place in Japan it follows a self proclaimed mad scientist in his journey in realizing that he has obtained a form of time travel and his attempts to rectify the mistakes he makes along the way. Together with his “lab members” he tries to keep an “evil organization” away from learning his new found ability and discovers just how much weight a single decision can hold.

Story

When it comes to anime that involves some sort of time travel aspect, most have a hard time properly incorporating it within the story. Typically the issue lies with improper or lacking explanation of the how time travel is done, or its done in a manner that leaves far too many plot holes. However Steins;Gate makes use of the parallel worlds theory, an idea in quantum physics on that holds the premise that there are on infinite number of other possible realities teach slightly or even drastically different than each other.

Once Okabe begins to alter his own world by making decisions that affect the past, he begins to realize that the world he was once in is not the same, and his decisions cause him to get transported to different world lines. He is the only one who can observe the jumps between worlds and dubs the ability “Reading Steiner.” Okabe and his friends continue to play with their time traveling device until the plot picks up and an event occurs that causes Okabe to realize that he has to go back and change it all. He has to go back and undo every mistake that he made and return to his original world line.

It is important to note that the characters get a good portion of character development during the beginning of the anime, in fact, the plot does not start to kick in as early as episode seven. Which makes the anime rather slow in the beginning, as the characters hold the spotlight until the story kicks in. Once it does, the story does well to explain shifts from each world line without leaving plot holes that break the story. As well linking them a;l together in the end that fits the butterfly effect theme of the entire show.

The only possible plot hole that could be considered in the story is how Okabe retains his memories of each world while everyone else does not, however a counter argument could be made that this is due to him being the one who makes the changes that creates the jumps between worlds. However this crosses into different theories on time travel, and is up to interpretation. I can't go into the majority of the story without discussing spoiler material, this is much as I am willing to go without spoiling the reader.

Characters

Rintaro Okabe
A self proclaimed mad scientist who at first appears to be a delusional conspiracy theorist, who is nothing short of loony. The main protagonist of the show, who as the viewer is quick to find out, is actually rather intelligent and quick witted. His rather unique personality serves as a source of comedy and is what makes him the most interesting of all of the characters.

From early on we see that Okabe has an obsession with time travel, and will even go so far as to enter lengthy debates with anyone that thinks otherwise of the concept itself. After several episodes he discovers a form of time travel that he begins testing. Which he plans to use to “fight” the evil “organization” that he believes to exist, in order to prevent them from gaining power. As he experiments more and more with his friends he begins to learn that all the choices he has made with his time traveling device has no created a deviations from the world he was once in and he must return it back to normal. He goes from being the the type of blissfully unaware know it all, to his role of caring friend that does would needs to be done in order to save his friends, even at the sake of his own sanity.

Kurisu Makise
Kurisu us the main female protagonist within the story, extremely intelligent, as she is a neuroscience researcher at the age of 18, she has even published an academic paper. She is the token tsundere of the group and as such hates being grouped with the stereotype. Though more mature at her age due to her upbringing as an intellectual, she usually ends up clashing heads with Okabe as she despises his tendency to often be rather paranoid and believe in things that do not exist.

Most of her development is seen through here interactions with Okabe, though mostly at odds with one another due to their polar opposite personalities, they become close friends, who support each other. They become close enough to trust one another to tell the truth about things that most others would just shrug off as a lie. As the story progresses she shows more weakness about her self, and gets comfortable with her friends to tell them personal things about herself like her troubled relationship wth her dad. Though she may appear to be another tsundere character, her dere side allows for development, where there would not otherwise not have been.

Mayuri Shiina
Mayuri is Okabe's childhood friend and companion, an airhead who is far too naive, and at times blissfully unaware of certain things while attentive to people themselves. She works at a maid cafe and is the one who helps out Okabe whenever he needs food. Overly optimistic she remains as the cute character of the group, and keeps Okabe together when he needs it.

While mostly used to be cute within the story her connection to Okabe is what makes her a very relevant character. Being his childhood friend, she knows a lot about him and is usually sympathetic to his whacky adventures and trials. She serves as an anchor for Okabe, both in how how he spends his time doing odd activities and being a supportive friend. She becomes more important to the story later on, due to her involvement with a change in world lines.

Itaru Hashida
Daru, as he is called by his friends, is a skilled hacker with extensive knowledge in computer programming. He is an otaku at heart and usually acts perverted to the females of the cast, in a joking manner. He is one of Okabe's close friends who has known him since high school, but finds his behavior irritating at times.

His programming skills become more important later on as they are used to get a hold of information that proves one of Okabe's theories on the “organization.” Daru's role is much more important outside of the anime, and is more prominent in the future in his role with the time traveling device. He also has a deeper that though connection with another character, however that is for the viewer to find out.

Moeka Kiryu
Moeka is a rather shy and timid girl who in almost all occasions will only interact with others through text messages, even if they are right in front of her. She is extremely protective of her phone and  becomes quite upset whenever someone tries to take her phone from her.

Much about Moeka isn't revealed about her until later after a dramatic shift in the plot takes place. Once this happens the viewer gets to see that she is a broken character due to certain circumstances. For all intents and purposes, I can't go too much into her character without giving massive spoilers.

Ruka Urushibara
Ruka is a character that appears to be a female, but is actually a male that wears woman's clothing. Shy and rather confused about his feelings due to how he feels about his gender. Ruka is a troubled character, and is the more feminine than any of the other girls.

Ruka has strong feelings for Okabe though he usually just pretends to ignore his feelings, until later in the story. Where he influences Okabe to shift into a new world line, due to an urban legend that he learned in order to test a theory about his mom, which causes Okabe to reconsider his relationship with Ruka after the shift into a new world line,

Feyris Nyannyan
Feyris is one of Mayuri's close friends and works at the came maid cafe as she does, and in the anime is responsible for making Akihabara , a city in Japan, a city filled with anime and moe material. She is the only character who isn't bothered by Okabe's behavior and actually joins in and play along with his delusions.

Feyris does not take a large part of the story but she is noticeable for her manner of speech where she adds “nya” to the end of her sentences, “meowster” in the dub. The only real attention she gets is when she convinces Okabe to make a shift in world lines to get her closer to a family member. Outside of that she remains a rather small and irrelevant character for most of the show.

Suzuha Amane
Suzuha is tomboy girl who takes a job near Okabe's lab and searches for her father for the most of the show. She has a deep hatred for Kurisu, though it is not revealed later on as to why she does.

Suzuha's role is rather important with in the story, however her role at the same time contains the most spoilers for the plot itself. Her involvement with the time travel Okabe uses is why most of her involvement with time travel and Okabe cannot be discussed without going into literally ever big spoiler within Steins;Gate.

Animation

The animation in Steins;Gate did what it needed to, with a lack of any real need for it in most situations. It was of quality, with unique eye design reminiscent of the visual novel. As well as good character design that matched each character well based on their personalities.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by multiple people, while none of the songs are stick out by themselves, with the exception of the opening. All of the tracks do more well to reinforce the tone of the situation that they are used in, rather than being a highlight of a scene.

Personal Enjoyment

Being a fan of sci fi anime and anything involving time travel, I thoroughly enjoyed Steins;Gate. Usually when you watch an anime that includes a time travel aspect there are typically plot holes left to big to ignore. Steins;Gate is an exception, as it wraps everything nicely be the end that there are no paradoxes left to complain about. It is important to note that with the exception of one female character Okabe manages to get the attention and vary levels of love from the female cast, though its not done to where it stays as a major part of the story it can detract from the plot at times. Though the anime does originate from a visual novel so it shouldn't be too surprising that some aspect of it remains. Overall, its one of the best thriller scifi animes that I have watched in a long time.

As stated before its rare that you have a plot that relies heavily on time travel and leaves no plot holes or paradoxes in the show. Even rarer to explain with enough detail that the viewer is given enough information to follow, but not be disappointed at the lack of a proper explanation. Also having an interesting cast of characters with colorful enough personalities make Steins;Gate a wondeful anime, worthy of a watch.

Personally, I enjoyed the plot and characters above all else in the show, Steins;Gate doesn't have much to offer with its animation as there a lack of fight scenes, while the songs from the soundtrack do more well to enhance a scene, but remain unmemorable. For an anime with such a solid story with time travel, I could not ask for more.

News / Anime: Baccano Review

Baccano is set during the prohibition era of the US, taking place mostly in New York, among a few other locations. It tells the tale of opposing mafia families, a train robbery, the search for a lost brother, and even a man who tries to gain immortality by creating an elixir made long ago. Packed with intertwining stories and characters, it's a captivating adventure that will surely have you wanting more out of the mafioso filled plot.

Story

The way in which the story is told in Baccano is different than most anime, for one it tells three stories throughout the entire anime. Not only that but the three stories are interlaced within each other and are told at the same time. The three main stories consist of the robbing and massacre on board of the train The Flying Pussy Foot, the search for Dallas Genoard, and the disputes in New York between the different mafia families that also involves the creation of an immortality elixir.

The anime uses a non linear method to telling its story, from beginning to end each episode contains part of stories from different years, arcs, flashbacks and third person retelling of stories. Each following some sort of issue issue with the group or family that it focuses on, which can create a bit of a random and unpredictable viewing experience. Due to this, the story can be hard to follow at first and unless you are making sure to pay attention then you'll lose track of important events.

This kind of story telling has its pros and cons in regards to the viewer experience. New viewers and anime fans familiar to the old plot formula will find it becomes a bit difficult to to keep track with the overall plot line of the series in the beginning and throughout the anime until the later portion. At the same time this method provides something new for the viewer as this method is rarely ever used, and done well at that. Also it gives the viewer wanting more out of the story by playing detective, until the very end, as most relationships and conclusions are not revealed until the later portions of the anime.

One of Baccano's strength is its portrayal of the setting of its story, rarely will you find an realistic to semi-realistic anime that does not have the story in Japan at some point. The anime does a fantastic job of giving a natural feel of the later part of the prohibition era, it features speakeasies, clothing suitable for the time, and even careful use of words for that time in America and proper accents for the time within the dub. Not only that but most of all the characters are depicted in a way that seems believable for there time period and universe, almost all of them do not suffer from typical anime tropes; not in appearance nor behavior.

Characters

There are a plethora of characters in Baccano, each a part of one group or another, all of them having relationships that span and affect others in other arcs and years. The other main strength of Baccano is its cast of characters, none of them are actual stereotypical characters found within anime. All of them have rich personalities befitting their role in the plot. Though most characters do not have much development throughout the anime, only in small bits here and there. With the strong personalities that each possess, the relationships that all the characters have with one another is what drives the story, Some characters have a bloodthirsty lust to hunt down others, some have beef with others due to their connected pasts, and some drive others by the small interactions with the characters.

Though most of the characters appear only in their respective arc, with a few exceptions to the time in which they appear, there are only two that managed to make an appearance in practically everywhere. The comedic duo Isaac and Miria, while their own shenanigans are an amusing spectacle to watch, they do serve a purpose besides comic relief. These two serve as a plot anchor of sorts that bring together all of the plot lines and parallel stories. Though the might not be much of a back story for these characters, they provide the viewer with important information by talking to all of the characters they come across and inquiring about themselves and their reasons for whatever they may be doing at the time.

Produced by a joint effort of Aniplex, Brain's Base, and Movic, the anime has above average animation during its time. Mostly shining during the fight scenes and during some violent parts containing excessive amounts of blood. As for the art style, priority is given to the characters, not surprisingly so, in order for them to have an authentic 1930s New York mafia feel. Though not the best what 2007 had to offer as other anime had taken the spot light with its top tier animation, like Kara no Kyoukai, however it was far from sub par.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack does a much better job of setting the tone of the anime itself, using a combination of jazz, and swing, the soundtrack gives the anime a genuine 1930s feel to it. With the help of the piano, brass pieces and some other instruments that were common during the time, the anime becomes much more immersive. See example below.

Personal Enjoyment

Before watching this I was used to the linear story telling method that just about all anime use, watching this was a nice change in pace compared to what I was used to, even if it threw me for a loop at the beginning. I especially enjoyed just how well the anime depicted the prohibition era and had a more authentic period feel to it. There was never a shortage of interesting things going on throughout the anime and I enjoyed watching the complex interactions between all of the characters.

The anime had a more complex web of relationships with its characters then most anime I have seen, and with strong and likeable characters to boot. Though the non linear plot method may be a bit jarring for those new to anime and those who haven't watched much anime, it was a refreshing change. There were some characters that lacked proper development but all of them served their roles to the extent of the story arc in which they were in. Overall its worth the watch for anyone who wants a character driven show that shows off how an anime can properly depict a period in time.

While a did enjoy watching all of the characters go about solving their issues the main issue I had was that Baccano had me out of the loop for a good three episodes before I started piecing the plot together. Despite that I enjoyed viewing something that was vastly different to most of the anime I usually watch in both story telling and in character relationships.

Fate/Zero is set in a world where magic exist and those that practice it are magi, unknown to most, they stay hidden. Every 60 years a magical relic of enormous power that can grant any wish appears, it is the Holy Grail. It chooses seven individuals worthy of obtaining it, typically magi, these individuals are called Masters. These masters summon heroes from ancient legends and myths, called servants, to fight along side them to obtain the Holy Grail. This event is the Holy Grail War, all the masters join a free for all death match in order to have their wish granted.

For any fantasy anime the universe itself and the story are two of the three most important aspects that must be put into consideration. The universe itself must be captivating enough to draw in viewers and be fleshed out enough that it can sustain itself with seeming rather dull and predictable. I

n this aspect Fate/Zero really does shine, although the idea of having heroes from legends fighting each other is not necessarily a new idea, Fate/Zero knows how to pull it off right in its own universe. Of the seven masters present each can pick one out of the seven classes available, whichever servant they decide to summon will fit into one of these classes. The Magic in the universe is formed with a combination of prana and mana, with it a Magi can do any number of things, from manipulating time within their own body to creating an altered space that can form into any place that the user desires.

As for the Holy Grail itself, it is a tool that all Magi strive to achieve, as all Magi aim to find the Akashic Records or the "Root," the source of all information and events in the world. There are three main families of magi that are the most prominent of all each helped in the creation of the Holy Grail itself as a means to get to the root, however once they learned that only one person could have the Holy Grail they stopped working together and thus the Holy Grail War was born.

In Fate/Zero there is no focus on one particular character until later on very fitting for a free for all death match, in this aspect it allows all of the Masters to receive good character development. Every Servant that appears in Fate/Zero brings in their own conflicts and desires that they held from their previous lives. Some of them even having connected legends that creates points of conflict, with multiple parties, based on the problems that the heroes had in their past lives.

As the story unfolds the viewer gets to see interesting interactions between master and servants, usually the ideals of the servants clash with their Masters that creates tension and even some backstabbing. Each master has their own reason for wanting the Holy Grail, each with their own ideology and approach to the war itself, making the battle not the typical clash between two opposing forces, but rather a clash of principles. Some of the masters develop specifically because of the servant that they are paired up with, creating bonds that let them grow as a character.

Through the entirety of the show you get to see an intricate web of relationships between all of the masters and servants creating diverse and engrossing scenes. In regards to action in Fate/Zero it's not lacking, having any where from free for alls, one v ones, and even a raid against a gigantic immortal monster. Overall being able to pull off a story with legendary heroes and people and creating something that is both mature and engaging makes the story top notch.

Characters
For the characters I'll do each master with their respective servant as each servant affects their master and others in a way that creates conflict, development in a character, or even both.

Spoiler
Kiritsugu & Saber:
Although Fate/Zero does not focus on one specific character in the beginning these two are the ones who get more screen time as the story progress. Saber and Kiritsugu both have different beliefs has to how a person should go about saving others. Due to Kiritsugu's bloody past he firmly believes that the means justify the end, if he had to choose between letting 200 die to save a city he would do it in an instant seemingly without remorse. Although this may make him seem as a cold character he is in fact an emotional character who has chosen to execute his actions with regret nor emotion for the sake of the greater good. Saber on the other hand lead the life of a king who lead her people, as such she chose to take as much as responsibility as she could, even at the cost of her living a decent life. She is a firm believer in chivalry and holds the strong belief that a life should not be taken without good reason. It is for these reasons that both characters, especially as the story progresses their beliefs tend to create tension towards each other. At the same time their polar opposite beliefs causes the viewer to be able to see the obvious flaws of the extremes in the ideologies of the pair.

Kotomine & Assassin
This pair breaks apart rather early in the story due to spoilerish reasons. Kotomine is a twisted character that could not find joy nor purpose in life. He just single mindlessly goes about his life completing tasks regardless of what they are. Assassin is a character that is made up of multiple personalities due to the servant that he is. However he remains a true assassin and rarely ever sees combat remaining on the sidelines as a tool for Kotomine to spy on others. Due to this Assassin is one of the few characters that does not get any development. Kotomine does not truly develop until he meets and begins conversing with Archer, the servant of Tokiomi. It is Archer that allows Kotomine to realize who he really is and exactly how dark and twisted of an individual he is.

Tokiomi & Archer:
Tokiomi is a proud magi of one of the larger magi families who is an old fashion magi to the core that cares but nothing more for the lineage of his family and would like to see the Tohsakas get to the “Root.” A traditional arrogant magi that cares for nothing but living his family's future magi lineage.  Archer is an arrogant King he considers everything in the world to be his possession, due to his life as a King who owned most everything under the sun during his time. He considers himself to be the best around in both power and  the only true king in the world. He himself has no interest in Tokiomi and finds him boring, but quickly gains an interest in Kotomine. He helps Kotomine develop by pushing him to find what he finds to be truly enjoyable in life and actually does achieve this by the end of the story.

Waver & Rider:
Waver is a coward with a short fuse, indecisive with an inferiority complex due to the treatment he got from other pure blooded magi. Waver begins as a stereotype whiny useless character in the beginning but slowly gains the courage to stand in front of his enemies without fear. Rider is the third King in the anime is a confident and charismatic figure. His past makes him impulsive and greedy but he values the bonds of friendship he has with other. With Rider's help Waver develops into a more likable character that could even be the protagonist. Together they form a brotherly relationship where they both support the other and some of the other characters as well.

Ryuunosuke & Caster:
Ryuunosuke is a unstable serial killer who derives pleasure from killing and gutting others. He is obsessed with death and learning the process. He is a sick and twisted individual who gets satisfaction from getting every ounce of emotion from his victims before eventually murdering them. He has an extreme detachment from reality that he does not bother with anyone outside of his own murdering reality. He gets a thrill out of killing the innocent, mostly women and children, as the process of their murder makes it more exciting.

Caster is a perfect match for Ryuunosuke as he too enjoys watching people get a moments worth of hope before crushing it in their deaths. He has a mistaken obsession with Saber, who he believes to be his old friend. He encourages Ryuunosuke's atrocious hobbies by giving him the tools to get new victims easily. While Ryuunosuke encourages Caster's twisted view of God that he holds to the point that his original is no longer present. These two create a plethora of issues for the other masters as they are not so much focused on obtaining the Holy Grail but rather going on a murder spree. Which leads to inevitable confrontations with other masters.

Kayneth & Lancer:
Kayneth is very similar to Tokiomi in that he too is a proud and traditional magus. A nobleman born with talent due to his magus lineage, and an individual who believes himself to be entitled due to the life he has lived. He is arrogant with an attitude of “I am better than others.” He holds everyone to a lesser degree of worthiness whenever interacting with others, even his servant. Lancer is a chivalrous man who holds the knights code of honor above all else, his strict loyalty to Kayneth is admirable but misplaced. He sees the Grail as an opportunity as a way to redeem himself of the life he lived as a hero. This pair is an instant KO waiting to happen, with a master that does nothing but berate Lancer for living to his code and for believing that Lancer will take his wife away from him. At the same time Lancer does nothing about this however he does provide the anime a character of true chivalry to displace the lack thereof with many of the other characters.

Kariya & Berserker:
This pair is the only duo that does not get along due to the fact that Kariya is so obsessed with his goal that he sees Berserker as only a tool, and mostly because the Berserker class can't talk, they're aren't capable of rational thought. Kariya is a rather unfortunate man, the love of his life is married to another, something he let happen as he didn't want her to get involved with magic. Scorned by his family as he abandoned his position as the next in line for family head. And one of his “nieces” gets turned over to another family to act as his replacement as family head.

Which is the reason he decides to join the Holy Grail War, by striking a deal he can keep her from harm but only if he wins. The only reason he lives for as long as he does his for is iron clad determination to save those he cares about. Which leads him to become a thorn in others side as he tries to kill everyone without much strategy whatsoever. There isn't much to say about Berserker, without being able to talk, his actions speak louder than words. The only other character who he affects is Saber due to his identity as a hero. He does however acts as a wake up call to Saber's naive ideals.

Animation

The studio that produced Fate/Zero was Ufotable, a company well known for its ability to create some of the best animation seen in anime ever. Considering the Ufotable had a rather large budget to work with its no surprise they were able to create something of high caliber that almost no other anime can touch. The animation really shines during the fight scenes where every effect used makes the battle not only look fantastic but have an nice fluidity.

Soundtrack

The composer of the soundtrack is Yuki Kajiura, well known for for being able to create master pieces and has done the soundtrack for other anime, games and movies. More notable examples of her work is the music in Sword Art online and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In Fate/Zero her work shines in making the fight scenes have a grand scale and gives important moments the emotion they need. Overall her work in Fate/Zero us one of her best pieces she has created overall.

Personal enjoyment

As a real big fan of the Fate universe and the Nasuverse (the universe that all Type Moon material is set in) overall Fate/Zero us a well balanced anime in all aspects. It's a mature anime with practically no fan service and manages to have an engrossing story that makes you want to keep watching to see who is the inevitable winner in the free for all death match. And with well written characters to boot it is an absolute must see for anyone interested in anime.

While it is the most well balanced anime I have seen, it is not without its faults, there are a few characters who don't get used in the best manner or they just don't get the proper amount of screen time. Also with the amount of story behind the Fate Series there is so much information needed to fully comprehend everything in detail that the entire anime ends up explaining what it needs to for its story but does most of it in the first episode. The first episode is basically an informational dump that may be a bit much to jump right into, but its written well enough that it doesn't bore the reader to death as it does also lay the ground with some exposition,

Fate/Zero being my favorite anime its no surprise that I give it such a high score but no anime is perfect, it has its faults but with everything it has going for it these small details are hardly worth getting stuck up on.

Gaming / Is the Kinect really necessary with XB1?

So later this month I plan on buying the XB1, but I don't want the kinect because I see it as nothing more than an add on that just gives me shortcuts via voice and gestures. Is there any reason beyond these shortcuts that its good for. I rather not waste the money on it if I won't use it.
