Miami is vastly overrated, and this is coming from someone who grew up less than 30 minutes from south beach. It's loaded with Cubans and the city itself is really dirty. If you'd rather stay on the east coast, I recommend going to Daytona or west palm beach, but the spots on the west coast blow both of those out of the water.
And by west coast I mean Florida's west coast. Sanibel, Captiva, Tampa bay and St. Pete are all insanely beautiful

Daytona or Tampa Bay
Tampa has Ybor city, whilst Daytona has pretty large waves.
Clearwater is right by Tampa, and both are fairly enjoyable. It is the west coast as well, so warm waters.
