You have 10 seconds to justify the inhumane murder of animals for entertainment purposes without referring to "MUH FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUMMM MMMMMSS"

And yeah, Giraffes are endangered FYI.
I can hear the Right masturbating to her right now!
Do you have to turn everything into identity politics?

I would consider myself center right, and I too find this morally deplorable.
I'm referring to stereotypical, generic, hardline, Tea Party Republitards.
You know, it's infantile language like this that turns the debate dysfunctional at the drop of a hat.

I really don't see how you're any different then the people you libel.
Was there even a debate to begin with? You just made a claim and I replied with a sarcastic comment in agreement with what you're saying.
No, I'm just trying to clarify that referring to the political opponents you disagree with as "Republitards" isn't the least bit constructive or mature.

Just a protip of the day.
Again, there wasn't really any sort of debate between us, so I wasn't assuming that you'd go uppity on me for making a sarcastic comment.

Or those two competitors could make a secret agreement for both of them to lower wages jointly. It's not unheard of where stuff like that happens. It's a win-win agreement in their eyes: they both get more money in their pockets, and they don't have to worry about competition from the other party. So it's not unreasonable to assume that such a thing isn't beyond them.
Oh yeah, that happens. "Cartels", they're called and I think there were a couple knocking around in Silicon Valley not too long ago to stop the firms from stealing each other's engineers.

But, yeah, being pro-free market isn't the same as being pro-business. I want a relatively free market so all of the pricing mechanisms and exchanges of goods, services and information are as efficient and beneficial as possible. There certainly are businesses who try and play the system, such as through cartelisation, and the government should spare none of its wrath in punishing these businesses.
I'm not really familiar with how much "cartel" businesses here in the US are punished/regulated by the Government, since businesses are generally far more influential in politics in the US than in Europe. Not sure how it is in the UK though.

But I'm doubtful that they'd be regulated nearly as much as they should be here.

I would not be in a state of mourning if they were dismantled or checked in influence.
They're up in arms over here in the UK at the moment because the new Business Secretary (who is also Member of Parliament for my constituency, funnily enough) is introducing rules that would require at least 50pc of unionised workers take part in voting for a strike before the result can be considered legitimate.

He's also making it so, in emergency services, 40pc of the 50pc minimum requirement must vote for action before it can be taken. Unions are all like "muh industrial action".

Fuckers.
Yeah, and in Germany, they've practically shut down the train service, since the entire train union is on strike for the second time this goddamn year. Last I heard, they were making legislation preventing Public employees from striking. And thank God for that.

But your example is pretty similar in retardedness. Fuck unions. Fuck them all.

And the marginal value is set slightly lower than what it would normally be so companies can make profit.
I don't see why they'd need to do that; they could just employ less people. Considering labour is literally the facilitation of value for a firm, it wouldn't really make sense for them to try and depress wages to line their pockets further. First of all because wages are already depressed by things like corporate income tax, and secondly because it wouldn't go well for them to have a competitor role up and offer higher wages.
Or those two competitors could make a secret agreement for both of them to lower wages jointly. It's not unheard of where stuff like that happens. It's a win-win agreement in their eyes: they both get more money in their pockets, and they don't have to worry about competition from the other party. I'm not really sure what you want to do here. So should the US continue maintenance on highways/railroads, let them become more decrepit yet usable, or just shut them down period?
I don't have any strong opinions, to be honest. If you're willing to hamstring the labour unions of these construction workers and completely overhaul the welfare system you could probably have infrastructure on par with Hong Kong.

That's what I favour, from a hypothetical point of view, but if you're looking for a realistic answer I don't have it. If the whole of the US were to become like Texas in the slimming down of unions, maybe some environmental regulations and entitlements then you could see a nationwide improvement in quality without the fairly radical policies I'd otherwise desire.
Ah, labor unions.. Gotta love those. And when I say that, I mean fuck them. I would not be in a state of mourning if they were dismantled or checked in influence.

I'm referring to the scenario in which you paid the working underclass the wage that they would deserve for hard work
How hard you work doesn't determine your wage, and nor should it.

The marginal value of your labour does.
And the marginal value is set slightly lower than what it would normally be so companies can make profit. That's more the point I'm getting across.

Serious / Re: Let's Discuss America's Infrastructure

Well, most of the infrastructure in terms of highways and railroads in the US has now switched to maintenance rather than construction.
Even so, infrastructure can only survive for so long.

Plus, I think wages and unionisation among construction workers is the same for maintenance workers since a lot of the former are employed for the latter.
I'm not really sure what you want to do here. So should the US continue maintenance on highways/railroads, let them become more decrepit yet usable, or just shut them down period?

If you paid everyone what they deserve, then the entire system would collapse.
What?
I'm referring to the scenario in which you paid the working underclass the wage that they would deserve for hard work, then many companies wouldn't be able to turn a profit, and they would stagnate. So then that stagnation translates to wider economic stagnation.

Serious / Re: Let's Discuss America's Infrastructure

The country would enter an economic crisis if the infrastructure went to shit.
It should have crappy infrastructure because of high construction costs. Which is why I then went on to say methods of slimming down such costs would allow for the improvement of infrastructure.

I'm not making a moral statement about what the quality of US infrastructure ought to be.
Well, most of the infrastructure in terms of highways and railroads in the US has now switched to maintenance rather than construction.

I feel compelled to criticize irrational and harmful beliefs. I feel compelled to encourage reason and intellectual honesty.

I assume you echo these values, but since they clash with your own beliefs here, you dismiss them as "shoving my tree-hugging onto others".
We don't really get many threads about this sort of subject. At least not many which I notice.

I think that says a lot about the average discussion value this forum has to offer.
Then why even come here? Don't you get bored of only talking about your lolvegan shit?
This isn't the only website I visit, I have posted in threads not related to veganism, and yes, it gets very boring -- but that's not a good reason to let people spread harmful and irrational misinformation and hold harmful and irrational beliefs.

I guess it's just the whole thing of being anonymous and your actions generally not having repercussions unless they're exceptionally extreme. And also, there's a bigger detachment in forums, since all you're seeing from other people are the words they typed out on a screen. So overall, it just makes it easier to hide your identity and pretend to be like someone you aren't.

I'm just guessing really.

Well, I imagine that most people here don't support pure socialism. I'll acknowledge that there has to be some degree of a market system, but I just think that it should be regulated, since Capitalism is reliant on exploitation. So adding some socialist aspects to it could help alleviate the negative effects on the exploitation.
it's literally only exploitation if you consider value to be derived from labor, which is retarded
I was talking about how many people are underpaid for the work they do to give the people running the company a profit. That's how it works. If you paid everyone what they deserve, then the entire system would collapse.

America should have crappy infrastructure.

Development costs are insane compared to other developed countries. You can have cheaper infrastructure, but only if you're willing to slim down unions, cut environmental legislation and roll-back entitlements.

Also, I favour incentivising the private sector to contribute.
lolwut?

Have you ever been to the US before? The country would enter an economic crisis if the infrastructure went to shit. So many trucks and trains transporting goods all over the country at once. Unless you want the US to be like the Soviet Union where all the food rotted before it got to its destination.

Hypocrisy.

I won't say she was doing anything charitable, but I don't have a problem with someone getting a once in a lifetime opportunity while painlessly ending a dying animal's life and feeding a village for a few days. This was no different from putting down the family dog.
That's not the whole story.

I'm not a hunter, and I don't think I'd be comfortable hunting, but I don't really see a problem in her joy and pride in participating in such a rare hunt, since it's a very special opportunity. She wasn't poaching, it wasn't a canned trophy hunt, and ultimately it did little but end the life of a dying animal. Honestly I think it's incredibly inappropriate to pose next to dead animals after a hunt, but I think Ricky is blowing this out of proportion.
This is mainly because this person has such an established and negative reputation already.
