That's more along the lines of ethnicity, though.
well again, i barely even understand the difference, and even then, i'd probably just argue that it's a bit of a semantic one from what i do know about it
Quote
Even then it's based on misconceptions; -snip-
that's what i'm saying

so the difference lies in our definitions in race and ethnicity
i was under the impression that they're basically the same exact thing, with some... nebulous differences

like... cultural shit
but i mean, discussion of race is ALSO a discussion of culture

you'll often hear terms like "black culture" tossed around
they're the same
"Black" being used interchangeably with African American (ethnicity).

Hint: Blacks in America do not have the same culture as blacks in the UK, African countries, Japan, etc.

9032
Regardless, I agree with that sentiment. Race has nothing to do with it; those are environmental factors, not something relevant to a person's actual being.

9033
"hereditary commonality" is awfully vague by the way

you can argue that skin color, hair texture, etc. etc. are what "separates" the races, but i mean, no one's arguing about that stuff--that's not what makes a social construct

what makes a social construct is when you start saying shit like, "he's yellow, so he's just inherently better at math than us"
or, "he's black, so he can run faster than us"

those are the socially constructed myths that are being refuted
That's more along the lines of ethnicity, though. Even then it's based on misconceptions; Asian countries perform better academically, but that's because high school is optional and generally on an "admission" basis. Those who aren't "great at math" don't get in, so the scores end up higher. By the same token, in Ethiopia and Kenya, running is almost a national past-time. There are so many phenomenal runners because it is so ingrained into their sports cultures. They don't run faster "because black", but because most of the top athletes have been training nearly their entire lives like most athletes at that level of performance (regardless of nationality or event).

9034
If you're arguing that it stems from ancestors... you aren't really refuting anything here. All I said is that races aren't a social construct because it's defined by hereditary commonality.
well, it obviously stems from ancestors--that's the whole idea behind genetics and hereditary traits like sickle cell and such

you brought up the sickle cell thing and implied that it had anything to do with race, so i tackled that
Development is development. Arabs are also prone to Sickle Cell (to a slightly lesser degree) for the same reasons. It's not being Arabic or African that makes you more prone, it's just because the origin of those traits are also the origins of the traits that govern blood disorders and other things.

9035
In this thread:

>Correlation = Causation

>No presence of historical awareness

>Extremely Eurocentric/Americentric viewpoints

In essence, you niggas are stupid
Expand upon you meme arrows my Germanic compatriot.

9036
I mostly meant aesthetic, but I just remembered that being of certain races increases your likeliness to contract various health issues. For example, black persons are more likely to contract Sickle Cell than someone who is Asian.
that has more to do with region than race though

it's not that black people are inherently more prone to it--it's that africa itself happens to be infested with plasmodium
and sickle cell was naturally selected to counteract malaria (i'm pretty sure anyway)
Within North America (not Africa) African Americans experience a much more prone to contracting Sickle Cell than a Hispanic or Caucasian person.

If you're arguing that it stems from their ancestors... you aren't really refuting anything here. All I said is that races aren't a social construct because it's defined by hereditary commonality. Probability of contracting something like Sickle Cell is just an example of something hereditary that isn't aesthetic.

9037
As long as we can acknowledge that ethnicity is not.
Ethnicity includes nationality and regional culture as descriptors, so no, ethnicity is a social concept to some degree.

9038
That's why I refrained from saying genetics. Skin pigmentation (not strictly, but you know what I mean) is usually hereditary, as is your hair, eye color, etc.
oh, well yeah

you threw me off when you said "physical"--i thought you might have been referring to something athletic

9039
Race is an indicator of certain physical, heredity traits, no?
it actually isn't
like, at all

(i actually just learned about this in my sociology class)

Race is an indicator of certain physical, heredity traits, no? Perception of races could be social, sure, but races are natural.

Asylum Demon works thematically at all, but it's more likely that the Hammer is meant for someone to get on NG+ since the holding stats for it are astronomically high for a fresh character.

Confirmed for a better polished game than Ghosts/AW already. Will look forward to see how it turns out.

Now to be fair, Campus PD in the US is notoriously bad about handling rape cases. I don't think anybody would want to deal with them. At the same time, refusing to work with them (indicating they were trying) and instead carrying out your own brand of vigilante justice to destroy his character isn't okay.
as i understand it, about 18 months after the fact she DID go to the police to file a report, but when they said it would take a long time she didnt pursue it any further. also, the accused rapist was not condemned by the university's investigation, yet they still allowed her to use the "performance piece" as her thesis and publicly labeled him a rapist in various on-campus anti-rape events.

he's got a lot of damning evidence to put her story to shame, so i think the school is gonna end up shelling out a fair bit of cash to him. justice may just be served this time
18 months?! I understand that rape is a traumatic experience, and that it's a fairly humiliating procedure to be "scooped" for evidence, but waiting a year and a half to visit the police is just intolerable. Any evidence she would have had against him would be gone at that point.

Gaming / Re: Steam has paid mods now
« on: April 24, 2015, 07:45:02 PM »
The first case has already appeared.

Very rarely does a mod use 100% original assets. As such, "paid mods" are a more of an intellectual property minefield than it already was because now people have the potential to monetize items that don't belong to them. This was an incredible short-sighted and ill thought-out idea.

1) More EA's fault than DICE, me thinks. Reeks of rushed development.

2) Terrible idea, definitely. Especially considering that different classes of Stormtrooper use different weapons, so class systems work perfectly with the media.

3) There's in-atmosphere ship battles, but that's not really the same thing. They're considering it for DLC iirc, but even then it better be free or really cheap.

4) There's going to be a lot of DLC, bet on it.

5) They've said that there are missions; what they mean by that hasn't been elaborated on yet.

I don't plan on buying it at all, but making it worse than it is won't solve anything. If at all, it'll probably have an adverse effect; by exaggerating the flaws so hard, the anti-crowd will just look like they're overblowing this.

I honestly blame EA still. Indie devs take longer to make games because they are not on any publishers clock. They can put any of their ideas without worry about a release date.
>Early access cancer plaguing the indie scene over the past few years
That's kind of true but there have still been tons of amazing indie games in the past few years.
Quality is based on the developer and publisher; in the case of indie games, the developer is both. It does allow more creative freedom, yes, but whether they have the financial backing or ability/drive to do so suffers in a lot of cases. A good game is based on the developer creating a quality product and the publisher giving them enough time/room to do so. EA, Ubisoft, etc are known for not doing their part. Bethesda has a better record as a publisher, for example, and Squeenix has been okay.

So you were unhappy that BF won't have space battles, but you're also unhappy that they might make them for later release?
Just like people were upset that Sims 4 wouldn't have pools ("It’s more complexity in terms of what tech’s there and what isn’t there, what we have to build to support [pools]."), then they released them later on in a patch?

We've seen this happen before through EA subsidiaries; EA pushes the practice of rushing out a barebones (and generally buggy) experience and they just "readd" the materials months afterwards in either free patches (how noble!) or in paid DLC. This isn't DICE's fault, but it's still a shitty practice and EA-DICE is still responsible for the final product.

Life in Prison, but then again I'm just against the death penalty in general and especially so if there is the slimmest of chances for reformation and re-education.
LOL
He's an idiot, a radical, and a murderer. Two of those can be treated and the other punished for. Killing for killing is just silly.
The death penalty is silly, yes.

But thinking you can rehabilitate this guy, and that it's even worth it, that's ridiculous.

Life with no chance of ever getting out.
Oh, I agree. But I don't think punishment should be the main goal of prison. That priority should be rehabilitation, even in cases like this. Even if it is a very slim chance, it's still better than giving up.
