Serious / Re: Walmart refuses to make a Confederate flag cake. . .

I mean, we're all adults--we've all took this course. Hopefully, everyone understands that there are reasons for these things. But how important are those reasons in this particular discussion, anyway? That's why we just use blanket speech. The details aren't incredibly important.

i mean, this thread was once about cake
Which was derailed into a discussion on whether or not the backlash against the rebel flag is justified.

I personally don't care, but I'm kind of biased since I live in the South where it's just an easy way for people to say "look how big of a redneck I am!"

And maybe that's NOT the argument being had, and I'm just not looking close enough.
Very few subjects can be accurately summarized in two words. Likewise with the Southern secession, "muh slaves" is a very poor way to explain the thought process behind it. Like I've said throughout this discussion, slavery was a big reason why it happened, but that doesn't mean that it is as simple as saying "they wanted to [a]". It is "they wanted to [a] because [x, y, z]."

I'm not justifying the secession, I'm trying to explain the justification for the secession.

the old men who i'm, personally, still convinced were just getting their panties in a twist because they couldn't own people anymore--because like i said, if they were decent, it wouldn't make a difference
As it relates to their abilities to make a living. I'm certain that there was a good amount of cases where it did just boil down to not wanting equality; you can see that in the persistence of institutionalized racism in the following decades. But that doesn't mean that it was the only reason why they were against abolition.

People don't just do bad things because they want to do bad things; they justify it however they can. Sometimes there are good-ish justifications (see: post-Iraq justification) and there are bad ones (see: megalomania, racism). Slavery was the behavior, socioeconomic and political issues are the justifications. If you want to prevent things from re-occurring, you have to understand the why. Saying "it was a bad thing, who cares?" is a problem.

I never said that it wasn't a good thing to happen. Yes, human rights are the priority. That is incredibly obvious. What I'm saying is that it wasn't just a bunch of old men getting their panties in a twist because they couldn't own people anymore, and I think that's what Sol was trying (and failing) to explain earlier.
i wasn't referring to you when i said "you"--i was referring to them
I know. I'm just re-clarifying why it isn't just being "stubborn" that made the South secede.

Not wanting the economy to drop like a rock isn't that silly.
not if you believe that basic human rights out-prioritize the economy

in which case, yeah, i think a solid case could be made to say it really does stop at slavery

because if someone had decency, and cared about the welfare of all human beings, and recognized slaves as such, would it really make a difference to them if the economy fell as a result of the abolition?... i don't think so

Providing a more humane alternative (non-optional, that is) to replace the lost production would have been the best option at the time, though, instead of just making hundreds of businesses drop their sole means of production.

I mean

They kinda were

Once again, pretty much every Declaration of Secession mentions slavery in some form or fashion and how it was necessary to the southern economy. Some go as far to mention how absurd it is that blacks and whites should be considered equal.
Not wanting the economy to drop like a rock isn't that silly. The racism is obviously stupid and stubborn, and also a poor attempt to keep to the status quo.

well, i'm glad we found the two people in the universe who do that lol

like, i would never even think to do anything like that
The TV is small enough for me to throw it in a backpack with whatever console I'm taking. It just werks.
it's just a lot of extra money to be spending when the game itself could give us the courtesy of playing on one screen
It was a TV I got for free tho, my cousin left it at our house when she got a new one for her room.

The civil war was fought primarily over political and economic reasons, it's just that these reasons happened to revolve around slaves because that's what the southern economy was reliant on

Thus why the reconstruction period sucked so much dicks for everyone in the south
Pretty much. Slavery was a big reason, and also the last straw in terms of choosing to secede.

I do think stopping at "slavery" is a little deceptive though; it gives the false impression that it was just the South being stubborn, when it was more that the political and economic reasons you mentioned all related to slavery to varying degrees.

] :-\ ye but its gonna be. She would've beat obama in '08 had flordia and michigan not jacked things up with their primaries. I want Sanders, but numbers are on the wall.
Sanders is too liberal to fly with everyone else and the swing voters.
I think he'll surprise people. He's drawing the largest crowds atm. Some 5k came to see him in Colorado.
But will he be able to beat the giant that is Hilary?
Between the email and Benghazi scandals, I think it's pretty clear how the media (and by extension how the public) feels about Hildog.

It still won't be Sanders though, just because a lot of his campaigning doesn't resonate over various social and political beliefs.

I've always been under the impression that the secession was due to the South falling behind in economical prowess and voice in government due to a number of laws and such passed by the North in the years leading up to it. Slavery was definitely a big part of it, but it was as it was related to what little remained of the South in terms of economic viability (as in the Southern trade would have crashed due to abolition).

But that's probably just my Georgian education talking.
