The Flood / Re: Worst new movie you've seen this year so far?
« on: November 02, 2017, 11:24:13 PM »
Probably Spiderman Homecoming. But to be fair I haven't seen a ton of movies that have come our this year, and the ones I have were fantastic.

EDIT: Just remembered GotG2. Yeah, that movie was intensely "meh" as an aggregate.

and then no one cared
The game was practically a blow-out. Not much to really discuss besides the fact that Doyers management screwed the pooch with the pitching rotation.

Agree, I'm pretty rough at keeping to time though. 5min speeches turn into 10min; nobody ever minds, because I'm good at holding my audience's attention, but it's still a problem.

I don't see how ARMA and Ninja Gaiden would be the weird guy
that's because you never see how anything about you could be perceived as negative in any way
damn you stay riding my dick in every thread lmao

Like I said, I don't see how there's anything weird about mainstream games like ARMA and Ninja Gaiden. ARMA is played by a lot of vets and a version is even used by the military to train soldiers. Ninja Gaiden is one of the most mainstream and popular hack n slash games around. Almost everybody's played it or at least heard of it.
ARMA is also played by autismos who like to RP in milsim, and Ninja Gaiden was as popular as you described a decade ago. Series died off pretty hard, unfortunately.
I don't see how that detracts from all the normal people who play ARMA. Ninja Gaiden dying doesn't mean it wasn't popular and mainstream.
It's a measure of obscurity by today's standards, aka normies who play facebook games, Cawadoody, and Madden games. The last release of a "real" NG game was 2012, and it sold 860k across three systems.

People know DayZ, but they don't know actual ARMA very well. It's not a measure of "good" or "popular at a time", it's "if I asked a random teenager on the street about these games, how likely is it that he's played them before".

Nah, I bought them to have them and at least feel like I'm playing it legit (since I can only play it through an emulator given that it was never translated officially).

Isn't this that stupid movie where they couldn't figure out how to kill the super kaiju and then the Asian bitch says to use a sword as a "last resort" when that's what they should've been using from the start
Kaiju blood is supposed to be incredibly toxic/acidic; it's why 90% of the Jaeger attacks use blunt force, so that it doesn't spill everywhere and cause more destruction/ocean contamination.
I only watched it once and I spent half the time making fun of it so maybe I missed this but I don't remember this being said in the movie. I guess they expect you to know that.
Towards the beginning of the movie, they describe the blood as a "toxic phenomenon", with a visual of its spread through the Pacific Ocean and a hazmat team cleaning a beach of it. In addition, many people in the movie walk around wearing those surgical masks. Chau also mentions having to slow down the acid reaction in the fallen Kaiju later in the movie. Also, one of the HK Kaiju literally melts steel with its blood vomit thing, so regardless of the normal toxicity of Kaiju blood, they probably wouldn't want any of that Kaiju falling over the city. And in the novelization, Tendo's grandfather became terminally ill because of contact with it.

IIRC the reason why they fly so high up into the air before cutting it apart is so that the blood can dissipate, as trace amounts over a large area won't have as much of a negative effect as a large amount in one small area.

I gave Akira another shot; I like it a little bit more now.

The first time I watched it, I may have been a little bit of a hardass. I didn't pay as much attention to things like source material when I started this thread, and I try to acknowledge it more now. For example: I criticized it for treading on familiar territory, but that was a little unfair, given that it's actually based on a story from 1982. That would actually make this film a bit of a forerunner of its themes and subject matters—and even if you could find older stuff, I'd be hard-pressed to argue that the film doesn't explore its themes very well.

I've also come to appreciate its stylish aesthetic, even if it's approached borderline meme-status over the years.

And that transformation scene, though. Good shit.

YouTube

I'm glad to bump this up from a 5/10 to a 6/10. That puts it in my top 5, eliminating Death Note.

Very recommendable, but try to watch the French dub if you can.
He's already recommending people to watch anime in languages other than English. On his way to being a Grade S+ Weeb smh
