The Flood / why is it so hard to find decent wallpapers
« on: October 10, 2016, 04:32:19 AM »
Seriously. I've been trying to search for nice skybox wallpapers from games that look really cool such as Mass Effect or Destiny but I don't understand how almost everything that comes up on a google search is either tiny resolution or has HUD on or has characters in the middle of everything

So yeah suggest me wallpapers to add to my folder.

examples of some of my favourites

There's more titanfall images because I found a download for a .zip file that has all of the achievement art, load screen art, menu art, and a bunch of concept art that looks nice. I would use the load screen/ achievement art from MCC but for some retarded reason they put black bars and logos on the top and bottom of otherwise cool images.

Serious / Boeing vows to beat SpaceX to Mars
« on: October 05, 2016, 05:17:47 AM »
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-04/boeing-ceo-vows-to-beat-musk-to-mars-as-new-space-race-beckons

Quote
Boeing Co. once helped the U.S. beat the Soviet Union in the race to the moon. Now the company intends to go toe-to-toe with newcomers such as billionaire Elon Musk in the next era of space exploration and commerce.
Boeing Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg sketched out a Jetsons-like future at a conference Tuesday, envisioning a commercial space-travel market with dozens of destinations orbiting the Earth and hypersonic aircraft shuttling travelers between continents in two hours or less. And Boeing intends to be a key player in the initial push to send humans to Mars, maybe even beating Musk to his long-time goal.

“I’m convinced the first person to step foot on Mars will arrive there riding a Boeing rocket,” Muilenburg said at the Chicago event on innovation, which was sponsored by the Atlantic magazine.

Like Musk’s SpaceX, Boeing is focused on building out the commercial space sector near earth as spaceflight becomes more routine, while developing technology to venture far beyond the moon. The Chicago-based aerospace giant is working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to develop a heavy-lift rocket called the Space Launch System for deep space exploration. Boeing and SpaceX are also the first commercial companies NASA selected to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station.

Mars Transport
Musk last week welcomed competitors as he unveiled a SpaceX craft that would dwarf the workhorse of Apollo missions of a half-century ago, hauling 100 travelers to Mars with cruise-ship-style amenities.

“The goal of SpaceX really is to build the transport system. It’s like building the Union Pacific railroad,” Musk told a space conference, as he laid out a plan to bring travel to Mars to a mass market with tickets priced one day as low as $100,000.

Boeing built the first stage for the Saturn V, the most powerful U.S. rocket ever built, which took men to the moon. Nowadays, Muilenburg sees space tourism closer to home “blossoming over the next couple of decades into a viable commercial market.” The International Space Station could be joined in low-earth orbit by dozens of hotels and companies pursuing micro-gravity manufacturing and research, he said.
“I think it’s a fascinating area for us,” he said.

Muilenburg said Boeing will make spacecraft for the new era of tourists. He also sees potential for hypersonic aircraft, traveling at upwards of three times the speed of sound.

Science Fiction
Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corp. are among the space heavyweights developing experimental aircraft that could fly U.S. travelers at speeds right out of a science fiction movie.

Lockheed’s Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 is being designed to zip through the sky at Mach 20 (about 13,000 miles per hour), flying between New York and Los Angeles in 12 minutes. Boeing’s X-51A WaveRider, which relied on its own shock waves for compression lift, reached Mach 5.1 in 2013.

Costs will need to drop substantially before these experimental spacecraft can be seriously considered for commercial use, Muilenburg said.

“That business model isn’t closed yet. At some point it will,” he said. “The future of innovation has to include not only the technology, but economic viability.”

The Flood / Luke Cage netflix series
« on: September 30, 2016, 07:17:38 AM »
Anyone watching it? I'm on Episode 4 and I'm really enjoying it.

I don't think it's as good (yet) as Jessica Jones or Daredevil S1, but I'd say it's definitely on par with Daredevil S2.

Gaming / Titanfall 2 has gone Gold

Gotta admit, I wasn't all too pumped after the Tech Test, but the way the game has changed in response to feedback has certainly got me a lot more excited.

For anyone that lost interest with the Test, I'd highly recommend having a look at the footage that popped up all this week by a bunch of youtubers and Respawn from a fuller PC build of the game. With the addition of the Ronin, Legion, Tone and Northstar Titans, the maps look to flow a lot better.

I'll post some links later, but off the top of my head the major changes thus far that have bedn fixed are:

-Wallrunning and movement has been sped up
-The orange outline on enemy Pilots is a lot dimmer
-Attrition returns! Also AI bots are around like they were in the original
-6 factions to choose. 3 militia (6-4, Angel City Elite and Maurauder Corps) and 3 IMC (Vinson Dynamics, Apex Predators and Ares Division)
-Titan eject height is now as it was in the original
-Smart Pistol is one of those temporary powerup not-killstreak things with only two magazines. No more loadout weapon.
-Lots of customisation for each pilot, weapon and Titan model. Camouflages, War Paints and so forth for all of them.
-A bunch of pilot abilities not seen in the Test look cool too.

If you were interested in Titanfall or Titanfall 2 before the test, I'd have another look now. Respawn have definitely listened to the feedback on the test (I'll put some links below for the lazy when I get on a computer).

The Flood / Red Dwarf Series 11
« on: September 26, 2016, 10:42:12 AM »
Has anyone got round to watching it yet? I've just watched Thursday's episode and it seemed pretty good. Far from the worst episode, though not as good as the one where Rimmer and Lister are stranded on the ice planet or the one with two Rimmers or the quarantine one (I don't even episode names).

The Flood / What are some good alternatives to google chrome?
« on: September 18, 2016, 07:19:12 AM »
So chrome just updated on my computer and it brought all the shitty changes that no one asked for, as expected by bigger developers (Like making it so backspace no longer goes back on the page).

Anyway, that combined with each update chrome gets making the browser run slower and slower on my really old laptop (funnily enough I can run photoshop cs5 fine for the most part but fucking google chrome makes it lag unbearably), I'm pretty much done. So I'm open to suggestions as for what browser to switch to (not edge/ IE, though). Anything that runs well on older hardware/ isn't bloated with unnecessary crap would be nice, as would something I can switch all my bookmarks to. I'm thinking of going back to firefox as I used to years ago.

oh and if it's relevant I'm on W10. Not of my own volition, mind, my college's wifi won't connect to W7 operating systems for some stupid reason.

The Flood / some questions about superman
« on: August 17, 2016, 03:41:39 AM »
So why do they (the kryptonian leadership) banish Zod and co. when Krypton is about to explode? Why do they not use the spaceship to evacuate themselves?

Also related, why does Jor-El (In man of steel, anyway) talk about looking to the stars when the Kryptonians have spaceships and portals and shit? Do they have a phobia of space or something?

Rewatching Man of Steel right now, some stuff I've noticed.

Edit:Also, why were Zod and co. allowed to leave with full battle armour?

Gaming / EA's been hinting they might remaster Mass Effect trilogy
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:30:59 AM »
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2016/08/16/ea-strongly-hints-that-mass-effect-games-will-get-remastered.aspx?utm_content=buffer8647c&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Quote
This console generation has become known for its plethora of remasters. Some, like The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V, have been solid updates to last generation's brightest games. Others haven't fared as well.

Right now, EA is the last big publisher to be staying away from that arms race. When I spoke with Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president for EA Studios at E3 2015, he emphasized that the company was looking ahead to new projects instead of dipping into the back catalog for remasters.

In the year since, that position has been reversed, as EA is now strongly considering a move into the remaster space. Of all the publisher's games, one series that stands out as having strong demand from fans: Mass Effect.

In our conversation at EA's Gamescom welcome event, Soderlund stopped short of confirming the remasters are coming, but he strongly hinted that they might be in the offing when we asked about BioWare's sci-fi trilogy specifically. Here's that segment of my interview:

Game Informer: One of the things I asked you last year when we sat down at E3 was about Mass Effect. At the time, there were two publishers that hadn't really dipped into the remaster world: you and Activision. Activision has since released a number of remasters or ports, and now they are working on a full-on remaster for MW. Revisiting this as the last man standing on remasters, has anything changed? Like a Mass Effect trilogy remaster?

Soderlund: What's changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke. There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want. The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it. I can't announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully.

Despite the strong desire from the market for remasters of popular games like Mass Effect, the decision isn't an easy one. Soderlund told me that there are a number of factors EA is considering so it doesn't make a mistake.

"We have to be careful in choosing the right brands for the right reasons at the right time," he explained. "A remaster is something that you can just do or do it really well. I want to make sure that if we were to do it, we would do it really well and that people feel that it's the same game but it feels so much better in this new shape and form. There have been titles that have come out that have done it really well, and there have been others that maybe haven't done it so well. We just want to make sure that we stay in the 'done it really well' camp."

With Mass Effect Andromeda on the way, the timing seems like it might be perfect to revisit Commander Shepard's adventure. EA says that Andromeda is still on track to make its current release window, though fans have expressed concern since the public hasn't seen gameplay yet.

"You'll get [your first look at gameplay] in the not too distant future," Soderlund said when I inquired about the game's absence from E3 and Gamescom. "I get people want to see gameplay and I just came back from a short vacation and I played through the first three hours of the game. It's very playable, and there is no alarm about, 'Why aren't they showing it?' It's strictly that the game will get the right type of exposure at the right time and that we can the right voice for it. Right now we're focused on our big titles for [October through December], and when that's done, we'll shift to Mass Effect. You'll see a lot more very shortly."

Serious / We could be seeing the first private moon landing soon
« on: August 03, 2016, 09:03:15 AM »
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/2/12275980/moon-express-private-mission-spaceflight-us-government

Quote
Private spaceflight company Moon Express will soon announce it has been granted regulatory approval by the US government to send a lunar lander to the surface of the Moon, according to a source familiar with the matter. If so, that means the company will be the first private company to have received permission from the government to send a vehicle beyond Earth orbit and on to another world.

GRANTING PERMISSION TO SEND A VEHICLE BEYOND EARTH ORBIT

Moon Express is a private spaceflight company with long-term hopes of mining the lunar surface. But in the short term, the company is focused on simply getting to the Moon first. The venture is developing the MX-1 — a 20-pound lunar lander designed to "hop" across the Moon’s surface. MX-1 is in the Google Lunar X Prize competition, an international contest to send the first privately funded spacecraft to the Moon. In order to win that competition, Moon Express has to get its lander to the surface of the Moon before December 31st, 2017.

The company has already booked a ride on an experimental rocket called the Electron, manufactured by startup Rocket Lab. But Moon Express still needs permission to go to the Moon — and that was turning into an issue for the company. Only state governments have ever traveled to the Moon or other planets. Currently, there’s no regulatory framework in place that allows the US government to oversee private missions beyond Earth orbit.

THE US HAS TO ADHERE TO OBLIGATIONS SET BY THE OUTER SPACE TREATY

And that’s a problem, since the US has to adhere to obligations set by the Outer Space Treaty — an international agreement that guides how nations conduct missions in space. Specifically, the US has to adequately oversee private missions to other planetary bodies, as well as ensure that companies don’t violate planetary protection. But right now, there is no way for the government to make sure that private missions going beyond Earth orbit don’t violate these portions of the treaty.

So Moon Express came up with its own temporary solution. In April, the company announced that it had submitted a payload review to the Federal Aviation Administration, in which it disclosed how the MX-1 mission would comply with the Outer Space Treaty. That included giving the government certain "voluntary disclosures," detailing ways in which the mission adhered to the treaty. And Moon Express is expected to announce that its regulatory patch idea worked, according to the source, who asked to remain anonymous.

If so, the implications are huge. This would be the first company that’s ever been approved to go so far into space. The decision will likely form a precedent for any future companies that want to travel to deep space. SpaceX, which recently announced its intentions to go to Mars in 2018, will need similar approval.

I really hope this passes. Opening up other planets for private companies is amazing.

The Flood / What should I read first?
« on: July 09, 2016, 06:23:04 PM »
Went to WHSmiths (a book shop) today with some vouchers. Came out of WHS with Alien Volume 1 (three alien novels) and Dune, the scifi classic.

Anyone read either? What should I read first.

Spoiler
I'm sorry psy, their scifi and fantasy section consists of one small shelf and there's no room for 40K when ASOIAF takes up 80% of that space. I do plan on reading that recommendation list eventually.

The Flood / So they've added all of Star Trek to Netflix UK
« on: July 07, 2016, 01:44:14 AM »
Including Voyager, DS9 and stuff. What should I watch first?- does watching the sub-series'require watching from the beginning (my only history with Trek is the JJVerse stuff) or could I watch say... Deep Space 9 before Series 1 or whatever?

I've heard DS9 is more a larger story than just planet of the week so I'm interested in watching that.

Partially because I'm interested as to why everyone despises JJverse stuff so much. I quite enjoyed Star Trek and... whatever the second one was called and I'm looking forward to Beyond but I'm also wanting to see the original stuff to see if it really is as superior as people say.

Though it was either this, Battlestar or Stargate.

Gaming / Looking for some helpers
« on: July 03, 2016, 03:45:11 PM »
So I'm pretty much going into making my first game. Currently in the planning stages, and making the assets proper and what have you. I have a loose set of ideas for mechanics down (which I'll briefly talk about in a bit) but otherwise the specifics are going to be done as I go forward. Essentially, I'm hoping for a couple people who I'd be able to message with to get feedback on ideas and stuff going forward, and depending on if I ever get that far, maybe even beta test (Though I'd be surprised if I ever get that far). I'm hoping to do this over the course of the next few months as something simple to show as part of my experience, as I'll be applying for Games Design and Development courses at university soon. It'll hardly be a massive thing, but something small and simple and hopefully enough to put me in a good light going forward, and so I can start getting experience.

The idea is simple enough. Over the past few years, I've been developing my own sci-fi universe... lore... thing. Anyway, I'm planning on making something set in it, primarily revolving around capital ship combat in the more realistic end of scifi- as in, I'll be using actual rocket equations and the like to develop my mechanics*. Alongside this will be some minor influences/ inspirations from Star Wars: Battlefront II's Galactic Conquest mode in regards to taking over all the planets and doing ground invasions. This is a very minor overview of what I've got planned.

Elsewise, all assets and development are being done myself or with help from others, so what I'm asking here is pure feedback stuff, rather than helping in development. Anyway, hopefully what I've posted ^^ will be enough for anyone interested to decide if it's something they'd be interested in or not. If you are interested, just post in this thread. I'll probably be doing this via PMs when I get going.

*Part of this is also to assist in learning some more advanced physics stuff. I find it easier to learn things when I can apply them in proper context. In this case, learning about Delta-V and rocket equations and stuff is a lot easier when I can apply it beyond just theory.

52

But fucking hell this is just stunning. Taken in the capture event's spectator mode. Looks like concept art.

Just got both of them for £10 each. Which would you recommend playing first?

Alien is new and is ripley edition so it has fancy DLC stuff, too. Wolfenstein is pre owned.

I do plan on getting Doom at some point but I'm waiting for it to drop in price because I'm cheap like that.

This shit is amazing. Happened to stumble across it on spacebattles, thought it would be interesting to share.

The efficiency isn't too good right now, but it's still a very early technology. Considering how wind power efficiency has basically doubled every twenty years since the 80's, I'm excited for the potential of this. Graphene is awesome.

The Flood / 40k books
« on: May 17, 2016, 05:44:20 AM »
I want to get into 40k. I've done some moderate-ish reading on the subject on lexicanum, so I have what I guess I'd call a general understanding of the setting. Beginner level.

Anyway I'm nearly done with Metro 2034 and Metro 2035 [english translation] and Winds of Winter both seem pretty far off so I want books to read. So fuck it I want to read some 40k. Particularly now I have lost pretty much all interest for Halo. Still need to get the world of ice and fire and the mass effect books.

I'm interested in tyranids and the stuff before the imperium (Stuff like iron men, dark age of tech, pre-imperium terra and the beast's waaagh etc) and the mechanicus, though I'm otherwise open to suggestions on what to read first. I'm guessing the pre-imperial stuff isn't ever exactly the focus of a book, but one that talks about it a lot would be cool (Like the bits in ASOIAF where they go on long tangents about the history of westeros/ essos). Though Tyranids are still awesome in all of their eldritch abomination glory.

So yeah, calling all 40k guys, recommendations? Based on the stuff I've listed and stuff that's otherwise highly recommended plsthxbai
