You work in a lab. Next to your office there is an ape that is extremely intelligent--has the intelligence of say, a five year old child. It can speak in sign-language, paint, express its wants, feelings, etc. The ape is content and has a high quality of life and enjoys good health.

Down the other end of the hall there is a severely mentally retarded person. This man is about as developed as a two-year old child. He has a hard time expressing himself, does little all day and his life has little joy. He also is in poor health.

One day there is a terrible accident and the building catches on fire. You run out of your office and the building is about to collapse in a matter of minutes. Both the retarded man and the ape are trapped in their rooms.

You have time to save either the ape or the man, who do you choose to save, and why?

Only one can be saved, no matter what you come up with.

Does anyone know what a nice gaming computer that runs current games on high would cost? What parts it would have?

I've been out of the loop for a while and someone I know wants a computer, it doesn't have to be super nice and I was gonna pick up a discounted pre-built on newegg.

Does anyone use this feature? I argued against it while the b.old community threads were going on. I said it was unnecessary and created poor moderation, and look how Bungie.net is doing today.

On a small site like this I don't mind it but I still refuse to use the feature unless it's an extreme case (spam).

I know some people here have pages of muted users

Serious / Nuclear war is declared, what do you do.
« on: November 18, 2014, 10:07:39 AM »
In a hypothetical situation, one country pissed off enough people that nuclear bombs are now an option. A few countries have launched nukes at the one country. There is seemingly no hope for survival, however:

You are the leader of the doomed country. Do you launch nukes back and cause mass destruction, or do you accept your death and allow your country to be the only casualty? You could fire back, and maybe scrape away, but most of the Earth would become uninhabitable. If you don't fire, your country would be destroyed, and the remaining countries that launched the nukes would become the aggressive, undisputed rulers of the rest of the world; however, most of the Earth and human population wouldn't be harmed by the initial conflict.

Of course, in a real situation the entire world would be fucked and everyone would be firing nukes at everything, but just work with the hypothetical.

cat always lands on its feet. At least, that's how the adage goes. Karen Liu hopes that in the future, this will be true of robots as well.

To understand the way feline or human behavior during falls might be applied to robot landings, Liu, an associate professor in the School of Interactive Computing (IC) at Georgia Tech, delved into the physics of everything from falling cats to the mid-air orientation of divers and astronauts.
In research presented at the 2014 IEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), Liu shared her studies of mid-air orientation and impact behavior in both cats and humans as it applies to reduced impact in falling robots, especially those that one day may be used for search-and-rescue missions in hazardous conditions.
Not only did Liu and her team of Georgia Tech researchers simulate falls, they also studied the impact of landings.
"It's not the fall that kills you. It's the sudden stop at the end," Liu said. "One of the most important factors that determines the damage of the fall is the landing angle."
In their experiments with a small robot consisting of a main body and two symmetric legs with paddles, the team compensated for the fact that a robot cannot move fast enough in a laboratory setting by creating a reduced-gravity environment using a tilted surface similar to an air hockey table outfitted with a leaf blower. Liu along with Jeffrey Bingham, Ravi Haksar, Jeongseok Lee and Jun Ueda, simulated the elements of a long fall and explored the possibility of a "soft roll" landing to reduce impact and damage to the robot.
In their work, the researchers found that a well-designed robot has the "brain" to process the computation necessary to achieve a softer landing, though current motor and servo technology does not allow the hardware to move quickly enough for cat-like impacts. Future research aims at further teaching a robot the skill of orientation and impact, a feat that falling humans cannot achieve but cats perform naturally.
"Most importantly, the human brain cannot compute fast enough to determine the optimal sequence of poses the body needs to reach during a long-distance fall to achieve a safe landing," the researchers note.
"Theoretically, no matter what initial position and initial speed we have, we can precisely control the landing angle by changing our body poses in the air," says Ueda, an associate professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. "In practice, however, we have a lot of constraints, like joint limits or muscle strength, that prevent us from changing poses fast enough."
"If we believe that one day we will have the capability to build robots that can do this kind of highly dynamic motion, we also have to teach robots how to fall -- and how to land, safely, from a jump or a relatively high fall," Liu said.

More advancements in search and rescue robots.

The Flood / Cannabis extract has dramatic effect on brain cancer

Experts have shown that when certain parts of cannabis are used to treat cancer tumours alongside radio therapy treatment the growths can virtually disappear.

The new research by specialists at St George's, University of London, studied the treatment of brain cancer tumours in the laboratory and discovered that the most effective treatment was to combine active chemical components of the cannabis plant which are called cannabinoids.
Two of these called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) were tested as part of the research into brain cancer which is particularly difficult to treat and claims the lives of about 5,200 each year. It also has a particularly poor prognosis as the rate of survival after five years of patients' diagnosis is around 10%.

Cannabinoids are the active chemicals in cannabis and are also known more specifically as phytocannabinoids. There are 85 known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

The new research is the first to show a drastic effect when combining THC and CBD with irradiation. Tumours growing in the brains of mice were drastically slowed down when THC/CBD was used with irradiation.
Dr Wai Liu, Senior Research Fellow and lead researcher on the project, said: "The results are extremely exciting. The tumours were treated in a variety of ways, either with no treatment, the cannabinoids alone, and irradiation alone or with both the cannabinoids and irradiation at the same time.

"Those treated with both irradiation and the cannabinoids saw the most beneficial results and a drastic reduction in size. In some cases, the tumours effectively disappeared in the animals. This augurs well for further research in humans in the future. At the moment this is a mostly fatal disease.
"The benefits of the cannabis plant elements were known before but the drastic reduction of brain cancers if used with irradiation is something new and may well prove promising for patients who are in gravely serious situations with such cancers in the future."

The research team are discussing the possibility of combining cannabinoids with irradiation in a human clinical trial.
The research has been published in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics journal.

The Flood / Batteries becoming safe to swallow
« on: November 14, 2014, 07:18:43 PM »

A new special coating developed by a team of researchers prevents electrical current from damaging the digestive tract after accidental battery ingestion.

Every year, nearly 4,000 children go to emergency rooms after swallowing button batteries — the flat, round batteries that power toys, hearing aids, calculators, and many other devices. Ingesting these batteries has severe consequences, including burns that permanently damage the esophagus, tears in the digestive tract, and in some cases, even death.

To help prevent such injuries, researchers at MIT, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital have devised a new way to coat batteries with a special material that prevents them from conducting electricity after being swallowed. In animal tests, they found that such batteries did not damage the gastrointestinal (GI) tract at all.

Still, don't swallow batteries.

The Flood / I fucked up and need some help..
« on: November 10, 2014, 09:50:14 PM »
You’ve got to help me, flood.

I’ve done something horrible. I caught my girlfriend cheating on me...we've been together for at least a year.

When I saw them together, I got so furious, I punched my girlfriend in the face..she wasn't very happy. Now this jackass and my (ex) girlfriend are pressing charges. I thought I could handle it with reason so I drove to her house. She wouldn't even let me in! I ended up knocking the door down and screaming at the top of my lungs for a solid five minutes. Out of nowhere the other dude came out and started yelling about how he is there for her and not me, along with other garbage. I couldn't take it anymore and was about to get physical again so I left. I told my mom everything and all she said was, “You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air.” I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought, “Nah, forget it. Yo home to Bel-Air!” I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the cabby yo holmes smell ya later! Looked at my kingdom I was finally there, to sit on my throne, as the prince of Bel-Air. I calmed down since she was no help and called a lawyer. Did I do the right thing? I feel really really bad that the closest person in my life betrayed me. Still I didn't want to act too rash..what would you have done in my position?
