My best guess is that it would be cheaper to replace the existing Air Force One, than try and refigure the current ship.

Well, there's a number of factors that go into that, chiefly casting, direction, performance, and writing. For whatever reason, Lucas decided not to lay some groundwork in Episode 1: That omission undermines a crucial moment in Episode 2, making it seem rather out-of-the-blue as opposed to the emotional culmination it's supposed to be: Unlike some other folks, I'm not entirely convinced that Christensen was somehow miscast, but George's questionable direction and writing weren't doing him many favors. Sorry for the edits, the inconsistent spacing was triggering me.

I don't know what movie people thought they watched. Rogue One was pretty good. Spoiler I LOVE that there's finally a good reason for the exhaust port. (TFA would have benefited from being more original, although I still like that Kylo Ren is the angsty, unstable young man Anakin should have been. It's not the perfect film, but it makes me yearn for what the prequels could have been if someone had pried them from George's hands.)
