Gaming / Best Metal Gear Solid?
« on: February 07, 2015, 03:04:37 AM »
I'd really like to start a MGS thread, but I want to lay down some groundwork first.

If you haven't played any of the Metal Gear games, and plan to eventually, LEAVE THIS THREAD. They are excellent games that, once you get used to the somewhat dated controls, are extremely rewarding. I don't want someone's accidental spoiler to ruin specific moments for you. If you don't plan on playing these games and are looking for a somewhat brief overview of the series for The Phantom Pain (good on you, but Kojima said that TPP will be accessible to new players as well as veterans), stick around.

I'm allowing people to change their vote based on potential discussions some of the users here might have. I plan on trying to change people's opinion about a specific game (because I can understand which game might be more favourable to the public), and I hope I can adequately convey my point of view. But I also am leaving the results of the poll blank for 3 days, as people might change their vote based on the popularity of another game.

There, now that that's out of the way...

My favourite Metal Gear game is "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty". There are so many reasons why I enjoy this game, mostly because I love a good troll. For the entire marketing campaign of MGS2, Kojima only showed you playing as Snake as you would in the tanker sequence at the beginning of the game. For some reason, they only showed this sequence. It was the equivalent of Bungie only showing Old Russia off before Destiny was released (except in this case, there was FAR more content than expected). If you weren't blinded by hype like I was, you might have noticed that this seemed a little odd. I mean, how could they make a true sequel to MGS1 by having so little story to work with? But besides that, everyone was super-duper hyped about the game, and it remains the fastest and best selling MGS game in history and potentially the most sold PS2 game (correct me if I'm wrong.)

But aside from KojiPro trolling us by taking Snake away only a few hours in and replacing him with lolRaiden, the game makes some pretty profound statements about truth, sensorship and objective peace. A lot of this goes over some people's heads, and since I don't think I could adequately convey what I'm thinking (and because I don't want to), I'll just post this video. It's quite long, but does a really good job of analysing what makes MGS2 click.

So, that's my reasoning. Hopefully this thread goes somewhere. Feel free to test my knowledge on all things Metal Gear if you're confused or interested in the series. I really want to release some sort of timeline before TPP comes out, but that will take awhile.

Serious / What is your opinion on stay-at-home dads?
« on: February 02, 2015, 06:57:44 PM »
Reason I ask is because I'm starting to think this wouldn't be a bad idea. If my significant other wishes to work while I'm at home, taking care of the kids, cleaning and cooking, wouldn't this be okay?

[Significant other, in this scenario, would be a woman, just for argument's sake.]
[In this scenario, significant other makes enough money to support myself and two kids comfortably.]

What are you thoughts?

Gaming / Just got a last minute purchase of The Witcher 2.
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:22:41 PM »
In anticipation for The Witcher 3 (which would have been my first Witcher game), I wanted to get the second one to see what I would be putting myself through.

Luckily, this game is free with GwG on Xbox 360, and it's currently 11:20 where I'm at, on January 31st. Talk about perfect timing.

Now, without spoiling* anything, does anyone have any recommendations or comments about this game before I play it? Considering I have virtually nothing else to play, I'm ecstatic about this.

*Spoilers include things like "the ending will make you cry" or "watch out for that twist!" Don't give me any hints or allusions to what happens in the game, I want to go in blind.

Incredibly bored and having a bit of artist's block when it comes to playing the piano. I'd really appreciate something interesting to learn.

Can be as complex as you like, although I prefer to do covers of soundtracks to movies or video games.

Post a link or something to the song you think would be good. I'll give it a listen.

Edit: I should probably mention that I don't read sheet music and learn everything by ear. So yeah... If that makes your choices different then so be it.

Gaming / How would YOU finish off a trilogy?
« on: January 28, 2015, 03:35:04 PM »
So I've been looking at some "classics" from video game history, and I can't help but notice that there's a definite pattern in trilogies.

The third games usually SUCK. Here are some examples* (which I will undoubtedly get some hate for):

*I don't hate all of these games, nor do all these games suck. They just either a) aren't as good as their predecessors, b) are carbon-copies of their predecessors, or c) completely changed what we would expect. Anyway you stack it up, these games aren't as good or are the same as their predecessors.

Halo 3
Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Jak 3
Uncharted 3
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (3rd generation)
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
Assassin's Creed III
Batman: Arkham Origins
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
Mass Effect 3

And there are far more.

So, with this trend in games, I ask you guys, the consumer, how would YOU improve upon a fantastic sequel to finish off a trilogy? Looking forward to your guy's answers.

The Flood / YOUR Top 5 Movies of All Time?
« on: January 28, 2015, 02:51:51 PM »
Felt like making a list. Share yours, looking for good movies to watch.

Here's mine:

1: The Godfather: Part II
2: The Dark Knight
3: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
4: Forest Gump
5: Guardians of the Galaxy

(I tried not to include multiple movies from the same franchise/genre, otherwise it would basically consist of "The Godfather", "Star Wars", and other superhero movies.

There is something seriously wrong with you.

YouTube

Skip to 20:00 to see how much you can REALLY do in this game. Or you can watch the entire thing and not be a stupid-head.

And in the latest KojimaStation, Hideo himself told us that you couldn't enter a Port-o-potty, and he just told the dev team to add it in. Just like that. He also told them that you should be able to knock while inside, shoot the water tank above it, and remove the doors. The amount of shit you can do in this game has got me craving it's release date.

YouTube

And in other recent news, Troy Baker (the voice of Ocelot, one of the central characters of the MGS franchise) stated that this game could "possibly be the biggest game of all time." Watch it for yourself.

YouTube

You don't even have to be knowledgeable on the franchise (although a few hours of cutscene watching or reading of plots on wikis will catch you up pretty quick), I myself wasn't a fan of the series until a few months ago when I started to play all of them (although, I did play MGS3 back when I was playing on the PS2, but I only realised it was MGS3 in August lol). Try playing the MGSV: Ground Zeroes, and within a few playthroughs, you'll fall in love with the game's mechanics. In the words of Big Boss from Bungie.net,

"I told you, MGSV's gameplay is sex."

Gaming / Defending TLOU (Xbox fanboys, come here please)
« on: December 29, 2014, 12:24:26 AM »
I just posted this on a YouTube comment section where many people were talking about how the game was "average at best", blah, blah, blah. You've heard it all before.

It's one of my favourite games of all time, and would enjoy a debate about it.

Anyways, here it is:

Spoiler
Ignoring the story (which is unarguably, a masterpiece), the gameplay is also great. It's not on the same level as the story, but it doesn't hinder the experience in any way. The problem with this game is that it NEEDS to be played on the higher difficulties. When I first picked this up for my PS4, I played it on the easiest difficulty (I used to play games out-the-box on their hardest difficulty, but stopped after Uncharted. I felt it ruined the experience for me.) I beat it within 8 hours, and had to admit, the game was over-hyped and average at best. But, me, being the trophy hunter I am, decided to try the hardest difficulty.

And the experience changed completely.

Suddenly, death was meaningful and often times, brutally punishing. You could last through 3 waves of Clickers or runners, managing your various supplies and 3 bullets for your magnum, and then suddenly forget about the one wounded enemy you thought you finished off earlier, which makes you start off all the way from the beginning. You had to carefully choose when to shoot a round and when to toss a brick. It is a carefully crafted, intricate survival system that, if taken out of the game, actually degrades the overall product.

Same goes for the cover system. While a traditional system might've helped some players enjoy the game more (initially), I think having the current system helps the game break out from the conventions of it's genre and deliver the experience ND wanted to.

Truthfully, the only complaint I would consider valid is the AI, both enemy and ally. It is straight-up, RETARDED. This is disheartening, consider the E3 trailer showed off incredibly intelligent AI that would've made this already difficult game on a whole other level. But I don't need to harp on that, Dunkey already demonstrated what I'm talking about.

This is just my two cents. Take it or leave it, I'd love to have a discussion if your opinion differs.

Gaming / Best games you played in 2014?
« on: December 27, 2014, 12:55:36 AM »
I felt like making this. It's 2 AM, and I need something to do. Tell me your list of the best games you've played this year. Ratings and reasons why you enjoyed them are a nice touch.

This is just a list of games I've played for the first time in 2014, they don't have to be released within the year.

MY top 5 games of 2014:

5: Destiny
I know, I know. I was disappointed, too. But I've simply put too much time into this game to not include it. It does have redeeming qualities, like the art style, gameplay, and raids. Besides, no other new IPs this year interested me, as they were all delayed or broken.
4/10, worth half price.

4: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Like I said, some of these games didn't come out in 2014, but this was the first time I played them. While I can understand some people's dislike for this game, it really feels like Kojima's best was put into the game. For a PS2 game, the detail put into this game is astounding. While MGS 3 is phenomenal as well, this is a nice send off (cheapened by MGSIV, mind you) for Snake and has something extremely intelligent to say about society and the internet.
8/10, worth more than it's priced.

3: Pokemon Alpha Ruby/Omega Sapphire

While it remains my least favourite region/generation in Pokemon, the game tries to fix some of the shortcomings of the original (my favourite being the faster surfing speeds and the less common wild pokemon encounters while surfing). The jump to 3D is also great, and I managed to procure a nice Ruby red 2DS that is reminiscent of the Gameboy colour/Gameboy Advance. Great game, far better than the original.
6/10, worth the buy.

2: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Many of you may have remembered me on Bungie.net a few months ago just starting to get into the MGS series. After playing them all (MGS1-4, 2 being my favourite and 4 being my least), I managed to pick this game up in September the week before Destiny came out. While the complaints about the game's content/price were extremely justified, you simply cannot deny the game's fantastic gameplay, graphics and animation. As Hipi said on Bungie.net,

"I told you. MGSV's gameplay is sex."

Since the price drop, I'd highly recommend buying this game if you haven't already.

6/10, worth no more than $20.

1: The Last of Us Remastered

Yes, it's a re-release. But I never played the original, and the upgrade to 1080p and 60 FPS is stunning. It honestly has become my favourite game of all time, as it's been months since I finished it and still can't get it out of my head. Gameplay and story is flawless, the only issue I have with the game is the average AI, when the one advertised was far superior to the straight-up RETARDED ones we got on release. (Apparently, the more difficult and intelligent AI was scrapped a few months prior to release because it was too difficult, which is not only upsetting, but almost insulting.)
If you own a PS3/4 and haven't played this, buy it now. For best results, play on hard or Grounded.*

* ask me more if you want to see my reasons

9/10, worth the price.

Because we know it'll happen eventually.

Holy fuck. They are amazing. 3 was pretty meh but 1 and 2 were phenomenal.

Just wanted to know what your guy's opinion on these classics are. If you haven't watched them yet, I highly recommend them. The only thing that's dated is the fight scenes (and there's 1 in the movie.)

Gaming / The Crucible is a fucking joke.

Just had a game of Clash. I'm not the best player (I'm pretty average, TBH) but this is unreal.

The fact that I can simply run around the map with no shield and do this just highlights how broken this game really is. The PvP is just, straight-up, garbage.

And I wouldn't have a problem with it. I mean, Bungie has traditionally had pretty average/broken multiplayer in their games. But this takes the cake above Halo 3, IMO.

Anyways, that's the end of my rant.

If you're going to comment something about how Destiny is shit, save it. I've heard everything you're going to say.

Anyways, I know a lot of people haven't done the raid, so if you would like to, let me know. I'm on PS4 and I know how we can beat the raid in less than 2 hours.

Up to you guys. You must have a mic and must be higher than level 26.

Gaming / Halo 2 Anniversary is a blast.
« on: November 16, 2014, 06:19:03 PM »
I never really played much of Halo 2 or 3 when they came out... I kinda switched from CE and didn't play again until Reach. I had played the campaigns and a bit of the multiplayers, but I found the change from the original too jarring to like it.

But now that the game is out, and I'm getting into matches steadily (I switched my NAT type to Open, made a huge difference) I'm just having a blast in the H2A playlist. BR looks, feels and sounds great.

Just thought I'd put my two cents in.

Just curious. Can't find it anywhere.

It was perfect. I was in awe the entire time.

Humour was, well... hilarious. And the ending was pretty unexpected.

Bills is such a non-generic villian for DBZ. It's going to be awesome how they continue on from this point... so excited with the new direction of Toriyama.

And the animation was something from otherworld. Amazing.

What did you guys think?

Gaming / So, I just got a full refund on AC:Unity (Digital)
« on: November 14, 2014, 12:52:03 PM »
I don't know why I keep buying Assassin's Creed games, since I haven't enjoyed most of them. But I thought "Hey, maybe Unity will be less glitchy and unresponsive than the last games."

Anyways, I initially went to the Playstation chat to see if they could refund me. I told them the reason I wanted a refund was because the game was shit and that this was the third time this year I've been fucked over by these digital downloads (Watch_Dogs, Destiny and now Unity). They basically told me to go fuck myself. I then asked them to cancel my Uncharted 4 pre-order and to inform me of the closest place to buy an Xbox One.

A few hours later, I tried a different approach. I started up the chat and told them that my "son" had pre-ordered the game without my permission, and that I wanted to request a refund.

Long story short, I have $140.00 in my Playstation account to spend on MGSV and Arkham Knight.

At least now I can go ahead and buy the MCC this weekend. I was hoping Unity would hold me over until ORAS, but I guess not.
