Following in the footsteps of more than half of Orange County cities, Irvine on Tuesday is set to consider displaying the phrase “In God We Trust” in its council chambers.

Doing so would be appropriate because Irvine is home to “more than 80 institutions of faith,” said Mayor Steven Choi, who requested the discussion.

Approval would make Irvine the 20th city in Orange County to display the phrase at City Hall.

He suggested putting the text near the city seal, or fashioning a graphic that would combine the U.S. flag and the text, or the city seal and the text.

An organization headed by a former Bakersfield councilwoman is behind the push to get elected officials to display the phrase. In 2002, Jacquie Sullivan led the Bakersfield City Council in approving the display of the motto in that city’s council chambers.

Five years later, Westminster was the first Orange County city to follow suit, according to Sullivan’s organization, In God We Trust – America.

Since then, 18 other cities in Orange County have done the same.

Some of the votes have spurred controversy. In 2011 in Lake Forest, for example, the city’s 3-2 decision to become the 16th in Orange County to display the motto followed contentious discussion.

Critics say the motto excludes those who don’t believe in God, and intertwines the workings of church and state.

Those in favor say the phrase honors the country’s history and values. Proponents point to Congress’ 2011 reaffirmation of the phase as the nation’s motto and encouragement to include the phrase inside public schools and government buildings.

The public portion of Irvine’s council meeting begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at 1 Civic Center Plaza. The item is last on the agenda.

What is this, 1954?

Oh right, I forgot I live in the most conservative section of southern California. *eyeroll*

Serious / I'm not saying it's racism, but...
« on: June 29, 2015, 01:02:26 PM »
Never in my years have I seen such widespread disrespect for the President. Am I Obama's biggest fan? No way. Yeah, people didn't like Bush II, but you didn't see congressmen calling him "liar" in the middle of his speeches. You didn't see people interrupting his time at the rose garden. You didn't see widespread campaigns about how he isn't an American.

The only significant difference about Obama is that he isn't 100% white. I'm not saying it is racism...but it's hard to justify that it isn't racism at all.

Serious / What's the point in suspending someone's drivers license?
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:58:02 PM »
Every so often, I'm reminded of Angels' pitcher Nick Adenhart who was killed in a car crash following his first start of the 2009 season. The driver that killed him, aside from a myriad of other offenses, was driving on a suspended license.

What's the point in suspending or revoking someone's license as a means of punishment? It won't actually keep them out of the driver's seat.

Today I was learned that using the term "hugbox" is a derogatory term against autistic people, even if you use it in a context that has literally nothing to do with autism.

I love the internet...

Serious / My city is meddling with the minimum wage
« on: June 03, 2015, 02:31:19 PM »
OH MY GOD ANOTHER CITY RAISING THE MINIM—oh..

http://www.irvinecommunitynewsandviews.org/irvine-2/city-council-votes-to-cut-irvine-minimum-wage/
Quote
While other cities across America, including West Coast cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego have been adopting ordinances raising their local minimum wage —  climbing toward a $15 per hour minimum wage by 2020 — Irvine is apparently America’s only major city headed in the other direction, actually cutting its minimum wage by more than 20%.

Councilmember Christina Shea and Mayor Steven Choi have been leading the effort to repeal Irvine’s “Living Wage” law — now set at a minimum of about $11 per hour (or about $13 per hour for those not receiving health benefits or other job benefits).  The practical effect of the Shea-Choi repeal proposal would be to allow the hourly wage paid to hundreds of low-income workers to fall to the state minimum wage of just $9 per hour.

Yes, let's cut wages in one of the most expensive areas to live in the country. Cost of living is going up, and wages are going down. No way that could possibly backfire and lead to people losing their houses and requiring government assistance.

The Flood / What new android phone should I get?
« on: May 28, 2015, 04:25:42 PM »
It's time for an upgrade. I'm leaning toward the Note 4. The screen size, battery, camera quality, and sd card slot are all there. Is there something else I should consider?

I know the LG G4 is coming out really soon, but the buttons on the back of the phone don't do it for me.

I really like the S6 and S6 edge, but they're too small for my liking.

Serious / Good cops vs bad cops
« on: April 09, 2015, 08:02:47 PM »
So, time and time again we see "bad" cops abusing their power, overstepping the law, and often resulting in injury or death of a person.

But at the same time we hear about "oh, not all cops are like this."

Well, where the fuck are the good cops? Why aren't they turning people in? Why aren't they saying something?

A fundraiser for the owners of an Indiana pizzeria that became the target of widespread animosity after they said they wouldn't cater a same-sex wedding reception has collected more than $828,000 from anonymous donors.

A GoFundMe page started by a producer from The Blaze, a conservative news network founded by Glenn Beck, has drawn more than 28,500 donors.

"The intent was to help the family stave off the burdensome cost of having the media parked out front, activists tearing them down, and no customers coming in. Our goal was simply to help take one thing off this family's plate as the strangers sought to destroy them," wrote Lawrence Jones, a producer who works for Blaze personality Dana Loesch. "But other strangers came to the rescue and the total just keeps going up."

Don't worry, they've raised almost a million dollars.

There's no shortage of people who are willing to support a business that would refuse service to gays.

It's like Chick Fil A Day all over again.

Serious / Remember Ted Cruz's big announcement at Liberty University?
« on: April 01, 2015, 01:53:02 PM »
http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/mar/25/jess-mcintosh/liberty-u-students-faced-fine-if-they-skipped-cruz/

Apparently students faced a fine if they didn't attend.

Quote
The university, founded by televangelist Jerry Falwell, requires its 13,500 residential students to attend as many as three events each week as part of a program called Convocation. There are sermons by guest pastors, performances from Christian entertainers and talks by leaders in many fields.

What happens if you don’t go?

The university’s student appeals court handbook has the list of consequences for various infractions. Missing Convocation is on the list. (A reprimand is a formal mark against a student’s record.) Here’s what the handbook says:

  • Each student should be familiar with these sanctions.

    1 Reprimand:

Late for curfew (1 additional reprimand for each 30 minutes late)

Late for Convocation (1 additional reprimand for each 15 minutes late)

    4 Reprimands + $10.00 Fine:

Absence from required meeting (Convocation, etc.)

    Disturbance/non-participation during Convocation

Dress/hair code violation (male or female)

Cruz’s presidential announcement was scheduled as a Convocation event by the university, therefore the penalty for a student’s absence would be four reprimands and a $10 fine.

Liberty University issued a statement about Cruz’s speech that confirmed that "missing Convocation is only a minor penalty, a $10 fine."

The Flood / Trevor Noah to be the next host of The Daily Show

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/31/arts/television/trevor-noah-to-succeed-jon-stewart-on-the-daily-show.html?_r=0

I'm pleased with this decision. Trevor Noah is a funny dude and I think he'll do a great job on the show, and provide an outsider's point of view.

If you haven't seen Trevor's stand-up or his time on QI, you should really watch them.

The Flood / Disrespectful wedding drama
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:12:15 PM »
Well, one of my buddies is getting married in two weeks. It's a rather small wedding and small children are not invited.

Well, a mutual friend of ours recently had a baby. The baby is 4 months old now, obviously falling into the "no small children are invited" category. So, instead of leaving the baby with her mom/his in-laws for the night [who live 3 minutes from them, btw], they insist on bringing the child to the wedding, a 90-minute drive each way - no ifs, ands, or buts.

This will be interesting...
