You know, I have a comic regarding Tails, Cream, and a baby that would sway the minds of everyone here towards Sonic being the worst.

I'm a pretty little Finn girl.
How little?
About a year out of your target range.

Sorry.  : (
I'm willing to go out my comfort zone and get with a 12 year old. Sure you may be starting to develop by then but I'll make the exception.

Serious / Re: Ethics vs Advancement

The Stanford Prison Experiment probably isn't a good example to use since it was an extremely flawed and biased experiment. Everyone was behaving normally until they were told by the researchers to put on certain roles.
True, sorry. I'll go ahead and omit that one.

It's a tricky one for me, because on the one hand you have something like the grossly unethical conduct of Nazi experimentation's which resulted in disability, disfigurement and the mental distress of a multitude of innocent people, but also advanced scientific and medical inquiry, namely the effects of certain gases and the treatment of hypothermia.

The same goes for the experimentation of animals. I suppose I'm a proponent of advancement if the participants weren't human, or extremely sentient, and that it supports a genuinely beneficial cause like the aforementioned treatment of illnesses. I'd draw the line where it comes to cosmetic purposes or financial gain for a small group of individuals, and the suffering of the participants greatly outweighed the benefits reaped from it.
I would say I agree with you. I'm still somewhat unsure how I feel towards human experimentation. Overall, I would say that should be something that should be saved for people that can consent towards it. With things like cosmetic and other stuff that isn't really helpful, I don't support.

Reality isn't black and white, and I see no reason to present my opinions in black and white either. Advancement with a conscious mind to ethics seems reasonable to me.
By no means was I trying to imply that the two of them are mutually exclusive, I just feel that there is an area where the two of them are in opposition of one another. The question is more to deal with which of the two would you support in this area. An example is like what Madman Mordo said about the experimentation of animals. Research that could go towards making curing to illness can become impeded upon due to the research on animals being seen as unethical.

Which of the two do you feel is more important?

I was thinking about experiments that have been conducted that advanced our knowledge but was through means that were unethical and was wondering which of the two you care for more.

To give a few examples, one such experiment was Harry Harlow's research on attachment. For those who don't know about it. His research by our standards today would be seen as a gross violation of ethics, but this same research advanced our knowledge as a society during a time where parents believed that too much physical contact was bad for your child.

Another study was baby Albert. This study forwarded our knowledge on classical conditioning but by doing it, a baby was subjugated to learning to fear stimuli by attaching them to loud noises.

All these experiments, while insightful, are considered unethical. Was the knowledge gained in these experiments worth it though? Should we be less restrictive with ethics if it meant furthering ourselves as a people?

>furry convention

Doing the world a favor.

Fuck.  Off.  All of you.

A few of my friends were hospitalized and my close friend had a second panic attack when I needed medic attention.  Chlorine burns the lungs and could have seriously hurt or even killed people.
Really, I'd like to apologize, perhaps my joke was in bad taste. I highly doubt that anyone here truly means what they are saying. I am really glad that you and your friends will be okay.

I'm still touchy on this issue, especially with the "jokes".  We've got furry "idols " like Uncle Kage going on the media to be an attention whore,  and this convention is practically dead.  All because someone wanted to pull off a prank that could top the annual fire alarm shit, and it ended up sending people to the hospital.
Understandable, it really is a terrible thing that happened, but at least no one was seriously injured or worse. I am sorry that your convention has been ruined and hope that the person responsible gets caught for it.

Gaming / Re: Dark Souls Fans?
« on: December 07, 2014, 02:15:26 AM »
Deciding whether or not to take a hint's word for it isn't trial and error. It's gambling. It's a crapshoot.

Even trial and error isn't fun, on any level. It's just tedious.
The trial and error was more referring to using your judgement on messages. You'll usually have other messages calling out a lying message often and in most cases they can be helpful.

Any game you play is going to have some form of trial and error, unless you play button mashers. Understanding things like a enemy's moveset makes it far more rewarding when you beat them rather than just ramming buttons until you do.

I think this thread can be summed up with this. Guess who's the top one?
Not me, because I don't need my hand held.

Dark Souls sucks.

The end.
Amazing lore
Great combat system
A very unified world(one of my main gripes was the amount of dead ends in the second one rather then the amount of interconnection of places the first had)

Really, I cannot say how much time I spent on the fextralife wikis reading up on Dark Souls when I wasn't playing it. The very fact that the universe is placed together by the items you obtain and such, rather then by just being told it was another one of the amazing things about it. You're immersed in the world rather then feeling like you're being told a story.

I can agree with you, the PVP can turn away people, but in the first, it's pretty much optional if you go hollow. Hell, most of the time I played Dark Souls, I played all offline because I had no gold at the moment. Most people that leave messages will help you, you get some that screw you over. I had someone leave a message that the female merchant in the sewers was bad and I fell for it when I started playing, that really fucked me over when I got cursed, but trial and error is part of the game.
