sometimes they're voted in by the community, but most of the time they're privately chosen amongst the mods themselves
I'm pretty sure the voting was just for the first wave. Second round we were able to make suggestions, but final say was the then current staff.
Wasn't the second time for monitor position, not mod?

No, I don't recall them making any statement at all.
Let me try to remember what happened:
Last summer, Kiyo started sending random people PMs containing sensitive information gathered from HQ. I got at least one, unfortunately. The last thing she posted was a thread threatening to dump a mass of that information publicly, all at once--and the next thing you know, she got lite-banned. She had the little red X in her titlebar.
I thought that was kind of fishy. A former mod threatens to leak a ton of staff-privy things, and she only gets lite-banned for it? It seemed kinda like bullshit to me, but everyone just kind of forgot about it after that.
No statements were made, and it was just assumed that Kiyo left and never came back.
Turns out she was perma'd the whole time.

Nope, the initial round of mods were chosen via vote. Slash, Chronic, and Kiyo were chosen.
I think the only one I voted for out of those 3 was Chronic.

It's not really that hard to DDoS someone at all, and if you have a spare 10-20 dollars a month lying around you can get access to any one of the countless networks out there used specifically for it.
It's more along the lines that I doubt anyone here would care enough to do it.

The binding to the nameplate was intentional. It's a trade off; you can have a cool nameplate or a heart icon.
