For a freshman level paper, I'm assuming your professor doesn't expect some lofty, ten page argumentative thesis about some obscure topic. You'd be fine to stick to the common topics (Marijuana legalization, death penalty, etc.), so long as you form an argument that is somewhat original (For marijuana legalization, you have the ability to cite Colorado now, unlike years past).
Or you could even do something as basic as "Is the ESRB crucial to the gaming industry"

Just make sure your argument is your own with a topic like the death penalty - don't just go and say "It's bad, mk?"
Take a stance - maybe you feel it's bad for all but convicted terrorists, or you feel that it needs to be used only in times of extreme certainty in verdicts. If you don't support it, give reasons like faulty convictions leading to innocent lives lost.
