I don't know shit about Drunk Souls so is this invasion gametype a separate thing from the single player mode or is it mixed? If it is mixed then that's dumb, and if its its own thing then I don't see the problem.
It's mixed, depending on how you choose to play. Basically, if you use a particular item that gives you certain benefits (like the ability to summon other players to co-op with, for example), you also open up the door for other players online to come in and invade you.
Once they invade you, you fight them in a duel--and if you lose, they take some of your shit. So, you pretty much have to beat them if you want to keep your stuff. You have no choice--you have to fight them.
Pretty much the only way to avoid this is to play offline--but NPCs can still invade you. And if you play offline, you lose the potential benefits that having co-op would have (some people say it makes the game too easy anyway).
Someone who knows and has played the game longer than I have can probably give a better explanation, but that's the basic gist of it, I think.
You've pretty much got it, except for what Batch corrected you on. The items that make you get invaded are "Humanity's" (or whatever the plural is for that). Which give you Pretty good buffs and enables you to return to human form after going hollow at a campfire (you turn hollow when you die). Humanity's can be lost when you die as well, and you can "Stack" them, so the buffs are greater, but so is the risk in losing all of the Humanity's you used. When you die and you lose the Humanity's you stacked, you can retrieve them the same way you retrieve souls, by returning to your bloodstain (where you died) and picking them up.

Btw Verb, I think you can only get invaded when you're human, so since you're playing offline, be mindful of that. They drop some gear you might like. It's Fashion Souls after all.

In a Souls game you consent when you buy the game because unless you were born with half a brain youd know damn well that there's invasions and they're a big part of the games. It's like buying Dark Souls but getting mad that you didn't consent to absorbing other beings souls.
The issue isn't knowing whether or not there's invasions in the game--the issue is whether invasions should be in the game in the first place, because I don't think they should be. I think you should be able to play Dark Souls online without risking the possibility of getting invaded. I think you should be able to do that, and the fact that you can't is bullshit.
I really just can't stand that logic. It's like saying, "Don't go to Detroit, unless you want to get killed"--and yeah, sure, if you're in Detroit, you have a much higher chance of getting randomly murdered than in many other cities in the US. But that shouldn't prevent you from going to some place without fear of getting hurt.
