Unimaginative and overall dumb characters is the big one. And since a FF game is only as good as the characters in it, that's a huge drawback. Kefka is a joke, such a cartoonish and cringy villain. Not to mention the whole jobs system was a colossal failure. Not my fault other people like it. That doesn't mean I'm obligated to as well.

mafia games irl are fun as hell, but they're pretty much perfected in the online form
I personally like EM more, as it's more streamlined and intense (no time limit, day doesn't end until everyone agrees on an action) but ToS has a lot more variety and it's more unique in terms of the situations that play out.
if you haven't played a game like this at all, I really recommend you change that. They're super fun and interesting
