The Flood / Magic Mike XXL
« on: July 16, 2017, 08:47:16 PM »
Ok finally watched the movie.
Question, is this not the most bro movie of this generation. I mean what movie is more about brotherly love than these movies.

And what is it about this movie that makes me want to learn to move like Channing Tatum and serenade like Donald Glover. Cause that shit definitely looks cool, imagine being able to perform that shit for your SO.

Am I weird that I want to try learning some male stripper dance moves after watching this movie or is it normal?

Cause mine is the worst, well four days of hell doing bush surveying, and if anyone complains about their work, I will beat you senseless.

And fuck Argos, they are the worst vehicles I have ever had the fortune of setting my eyes on. If I ever have to work in one again, I will burn it down before I even take it anywhere. No vehicle I have ever seen is as unreliable and defective as an Argo.

What is your worse hotel nightmare?

I am still waiting for a horrible stay as I have gotten lucky with all my hotel and hostel stays. Never had bed bugs or shitty food that made me sick, though food could have been shitty.

The Flood / Death
« on: April 27, 2017, 11:49:54 PM »
Why is death and all representations of him in Western literature, usually shown as an evil character. From the Grimm reaper to the the modern renditions of Hades. This personification of a state of life has been villified into something that people are disgusted by.

As to why I ask this, it mostly comes from me trying to figure out the origination of death as the grin reaper and the four horsemen of apocalypse and how it differs with Islam version of death, where death is a high ranking angel and considered the wisest of the gods servant who is sent to earth to conduct one of the most important task.

In Greek mythology, Hades the Lord of the underworld was never shown as an evil being who wanted to steal people's soul but the Lord of the Halls of hell and manager of the souls that made their way there from the river Styx.

In Norse mythology, Hel is the Lord of the underworld, and even there where she was cursed to the job by Odin due to a prophecy, she mostly kept to herself and never seemed to be protrayed as an evil or villianous character.

The Flood / Okay let's talk about race
« on: April 11, 2017, 08:43:25 PM »
Considering we are having a big discussion about race.

How do you identify people, is generalized or are you more willing to go deeper. For example if you asked someone where they were and they said American, would you just assume a normal stereotypical American or would you try to figure out what geographic area to get a better feel about the guys culture and upbringing. And would you do the same to people of other nationalities?

The Flood / Listen to any reality show
« on: March 05, 2017, 11:26:57 AM »
Okay roommate was watching kitchen nightmares. And well I started noticing something. Keep a track of every sound effect they use during the show.

The quantity they use is unbelievable and the number of cymbals they use to make a point.

But also one thing I noticed is how these very sound affects are like orders on what you should think or feel at the moment. Like a live show when they tell the audience to clap, laugh or act shocked. It's like they use the sound affect to control your emotions and the more you watch the more you end up relying on them on telling you how you should feel for any scene.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but finally got around to watching this movie and must say it's an amazing movie.

And honestly it actually beate interstellar for me. Where interstellar goes into love and yada yada, this stays on course of its topic.

Reminds me of one of Nolans old movie though and that just felt great. Has anyone watched arrival, and what do you think of it?

Serious / Fed lifts ratea
« on: December 14, 2016, 04:23:58 PM »
"Fed lifts rates, sees faster pace of hikes in Trump's first year" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN1430G4

The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday and signaled a faster pace of increases in 2017 as central bankers adapted to the incoming Trump administration's promises of tax cuts, spending and deregulation.

The increase in the federal funds rate to a range of between 0.50 percent and 0.75 percent was widely expected. But the prospect of a brisker monetary tightening contributed to a selloff in shorter-dated U.S. Treasuries and stocks.

In a news conference following the unanimous rate decision, Fed Chair Janet Yellen said Donald Trump's election had put the central bank under a "cloud of uncertainty" and already prompted some policymakers to shift their view of what's to come.

"All the (Federal Open Market Committee) participants recognize that there is considerable uncertainty about how economic policies may change and what effect they may have on the economy," Yellen said.

Though Trump's inauguration is still a month away, she said "some of the participants" had begun shifting their assumptions about fiscal policy. At least five of 17 Fed policymakers appeared to have boosted their interest rate outlook since September, according to the new "dot plot" of rate projections.

The Fed chief was peppered with questions about the president-elect, refusing to comment on his penchant for tweeting about companies or to give advice on how any fiscal, tax or trade plan should be structured.

"I am not going to offer the incoming president advice about how to conduct himself," Yellen said.

Trump, critical of Yellen during the campaign and considered likely to replace her when her term ends in early 2018, had not by late afternoon issued any comment about the Fed's rate decision, in line with his predecessors' practice.

Yields on shorter-dated Treasuries hit their highest levels in more than five years and U.S. stocks fell in choppy action. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies. Gold hit its lowest level in more than 10 months and oil prices also declined.

Partly as a result of the changes anticipated under Trump, the Fed sees three rate hikes in 2017 instead of the two foreseen as of September.

Yellen called that a "very modest adjustment" driven also by strong job gains and evidence of faster inflation. Wednesday's rate increase should be "understood as a reflection of the confidence we have in the progress the economy has made," she said.

TRUMP IMPACT

Fresh economic forecasts, the first since Trump won the Nov. 8 election on promises of tax cuts and increased infrastructure spending, showed policymakers shifting their outlook to one of slightly faster growth, lower unemployment and inflation just under the Fed's 2 percent target.

The projected three rate increases next year would be followed by another three increases in both 2018 and 2019 before the rate levels off at a long-run "normal" 3.0 percent. That is slightly higher than three months ago, a sign the Fed feels the economy is still gaining traction.

Markets and the Fed appeared to be close on their rate outlooks, with Fed futures markets pricing in at least two and possibly three hikes in 2017.

The Fed's policy statement "didn't mention the fiscal stimulus but typically their aggressiveness does indicate that there's a little more confidence that they can get away with three hikes next year," said Aaron Kohli, interest rate strategist at BMO Capital Markets.

The central bank continued to describe that pace as "gradual," keeping policy still slightly loose and supporting some further improvement in the job market. It sees unemployment falling to 4.5 percent next year and remaining at that level, which is considered to be close to full employment. The economy is projected to grow 2.1 percent in 2017, up from a previous forecast of 2.0 percent.

U.S. bond yields had already begun moving higher following Trump's victory and as expectations of the Fed rate increase solidified. All 120 economists in a recent Reuters poll had expected a rate hike on Wednesday.

In the weeks following the election, Fed policymakers have said Trump's proposals could push the economy into a higher gear in the short run. Even though the details of the Republican businessman's plans remain uncertain, Wednesday marked a rare case in which the Fed moved its interest rate outlook higher in the era after the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

Risks to the outlook remain "roughly balanced" between factors that could slow or accelerate the economy beyond what the central bank anticipates, the Fed said, no change from its assessment last month.

The rate increase was the first since last December and only the second since the crisis, when the Fed cut rates to near zero and deployed other tools such as massive bond purchases to stabilize the economy.

So any of you guys have mortgages?

I plan on seeing the housing bubble shrink with the rise in interest rate. Here in Canada there is definitely going to be a sharp decrease in mortgages being sold as the BOC will likely have to raise interest rates to stave of the devaluation of our dollar. If oils does pick up, it might not cause as much of an issue in our economy. But will be a great break from the constant increase in housing prices.

Demand will likely shrink as people will stop taking advantage of the low interest rates, leading to a drop in housing prices. Fingers crossed though, likely not going to happen in Toronto or Vancouver.

This is a question I have come across, trying to figure out what brought my parents together,  and whether they were attracted to each other's physical looks.

Serious / Shut Up and Listen - A way of approaching aid

Ever wondered for some reason with all the money we put into places like Africa, our money goes to waste?
Here is another approach to doing foreign aid and helping develop local communities. Instead of coming in to tell the people how to live, just wait for them to ask you for help and help them in what they want to do.

So although this is beating the horse and we have heard this issue before but wondering do you agree with it?

The Flood / Fist full of Dollars vs. Yojimbo
« on: September 26, 2016, 12:21:58 AM »
After watching both, one a classic from Akira Kurosawa starring Toshiro Mifune and another a western from Sergio Leone starring Clint Eastwood. I must say Yojimbo is the Superior one. Although Clint Eastwood's acting was great the similarities of the later to the former were too much, and the passing and the realignment of the story felt off.

Cinematography wise they both are similar but you can easily see why Akira was considered the Superior director compared to many others from his time till now. His writing pacing and fluidity of the story is something most directors would be jealous of and can be seen in his movie the Seven Samurai.

So anyone seen a movie that are successors of others and which one do you feel is the Superior one?

The Flood / Suleiman the Magnificent
« on: September 25, 2016, 11:39:28 PM »
A great man who tore through the walls of the World's desire. Yet failed to conquer Hungary. Though he did conquer Persia. Still he was the beginning of the decline for his action to not follow the inheritance laws of their people allowed weak men to take the seats of power. Why because of his love of his second wife.

If he was a true Ottoman he would have chosen his first wife son as the true heir as he was the most competent and after choosing him would have killed his other sons. Though it would have been okay if he left his most loved and weak and disabled son to live. He was a smart and loyal man to his first son. But due to his failure to carry out his duty. The Ottomans failed to have a strong leader with good genes. And in further fail to become a more powerful empire.

So I ask you this are you weak to allow love to guide you like Suleiman or are you strong and ignore the temptations of love and become a king?

Serious / Obama and the Middle East

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/04/the-obama-doctrine/471525/

Above is a long article about Obama and his approach to issues with the middle east, a place he tried his best to leave but was always pulled back into, both for foreign elements and internal.

As well as his push to pivot America from the Middle East to the Pacific Asia region. With his push to try to get the nation to give more attention to areas like Africa and the Latin America.

Another fun thing to read is his strong annoyance of his allies in the Arab world and his European friend.

Might be a fun read, but if you do read it, do you have any points of contention with Obama approach with foreign policy?

So it's eid,  and I fucked up by missing the prayer in the morning. Woke up too late and it was too far away to attend.

But looks like I am going to have to make up for it.

Still it's a day for celebration, so in Canada you can have a mandatory day off as it is a religious holiday. Another excuse to stay in bed the whole day.

So what are you going to do? Also any questions?

The Flood / My room is fucked
« on: August 31, 2016, 12:45:35 AM »
So rented this place for $600 a month. And second month in after bringing attention to the owner that there is likely a foundation leak in the apartment (after roommates room carpet got wet), I find mold hidden in the back of my cupboard and the carpet around the cupboard is wet.

Well either this is going to be a huge renovation project to fix my room or the whole house is going to get renovated for having damaged foundations.

Well that's my luck. At least I know I did well in my finals today.

So on to the topic. If you find mold, what do you do? And have you had any nightmares either in any place you rented or your house?

I covered it with shopping bags taped to the wall to stop it from dispersing in the air.
