I was actually talking about that grey area, and especially since the developer or publisher of that game might want to get involved. I think, that adding a donation button-- just like making paid mods available, it requires the actual developer or publisher (whoever holds the rights) to agree with that. It wouldn't normally be a concern, but a website like Nexus or a service like Steam which have a huge amount of users and mods, are special cases. They need to have a favorable relation with the publisher or developer. But fundamentally the paid mods failed because they didn't approach it the right way, and instead went with the industry standard which doesn't really apply well to mods. It should have given a chance for players to see how messed up the industry is. Can you elaborate? I'm much more well versed in criminal law, so intellectual property isn't my strong suit, but what would the legal problems be with an agreement between Steam and a content creator that they receive part of the money? "Donation" would be an extremely poor choice of words then, but "tip" or "contribution" would probably fly.
There is of course the issue with modding being a grey area because they're relying on copyrighted material (game assets), but that's a general problem with donations for that, regardless of whether it's through Steam or not.

There are legal reasons as to why donations cannot be put through Steam, it's not just about the cut. (Which would make sense for Steam to take a cut, since the mod would be hosted on Steam) Valve can't take a cut of donations though so they refuse to implement one.

That's the whole issue, and a lot of drama and hate could have been avoided if Steam was more transparent. Instead everything was done behind closed doors, NDA's and so forth, where the general opinion outside of Valve was barred. (Some modder also commented on some issues, but they weren't heard, I don't remember which one though) So really, it just goes back to the fundamental flaw in the industry; no transparency. Steam's system did not encourage that.

It doesn't change the very fact that it wasn't right what these people did. The internet shouldn't be what a football stadium is perceived as by some. While I think quite a few people get too wrapped up in the emotion, and don't really think the issue out rationally, I also just don't put much stock in 'people on the internet said mean things'. Since that is always going to be the case. Usually you get better results focusing on better dialogue, and blocking out the shitheads.

There are pros and cons about the whole ordeal and how actually paid mods could have helped. It just wasn't executed right. You've "won" nothing, nor I accept to give any importance to the venomous masses who harassed other people over this. It's one thing to be civil and express sadness or disagreement, and another to target modders and harass them.
Those people do not deserve mods; they do not deserve any creativity, time and effort of which creating, and supporting a mod does. Just because they are ungrateful, and ready to violently hit anyone who they deem right.
It's not a vocal minority either; but it's a huge mass of people who do not see modders as humans, or probably think it's acceptable to let out their frustration on them.

Yeah, well, at least that's funny compared to the death threats and other unspeakable behavior some disrespectful people had the past few days in gaming communities, and modders.

The author's comment on someone who suggested to put it on sale. For the moderators: I don't know if the text below infringes the ToC of the Nexus. Delete it if yes.
Thank you for your feedback, but I'd rather to allow the users the choice to donate to me or not. The Paypal Donation system on the Nexus is enough. Free feel to donate or not. This mod (and all my other mods) is not intended to be sold. Better download it while it's still free...

Well, modding will change, it was just a matter of time until it happened.

I don't think having porn or gore in the public forums as a good idea. Nor I think private groups should be a completely unlawful territory since the information will be inevitably hosted and affiliated to Sep7agon. If you want to find porn or gory pictures then there are websites for that purpose; use those instead.

Just scale down the shaders and some effects, and you'll get the final version.

I am out. RATIONAL!
So what if developers encourage modding? Like Bethesda with their dedicated modkit. then they don't even respect their own art
how can i have any respect for a developer who doesn't even respect his own art

What is it then? Get your definition of sociopathy checked.
because... that's not sociopathic at all
228
« on: April 23, 2015, 09:22:40 AM »
Get your sociopathy checked. Adding finality to your opinions doesn't make them the truth. If you loved the game, you wouldn't mod it. Period.
I've already have how many pages of discussion already? I don't really feel like repeating my arguments because you think you're special.

« on: April 23, 2015, 09:20:23 AM »
Yeah, Verbatim, if you don't have the maturity or the mental capability of having a discussion then you shouldn't even bother. There are other eight billion people out there, each one with their own shit going on. It's stupid. I'll never do it, and no one else should, either.

Only games that are loved in the first place get the biggest, and most dedicated modding communities. why can't you just love the game for what it is

Verbatim, please. Yeah, you basically are, though.

Yeah, and then you will be playing the game. Therefore, it means, that they can get away with it. You may buy it used, but at the same time, the very action of playing and enjoying a game just nullifies any need from your part to complain about something as ridiculous as this. Which is what I'm going to do. I'm still going to get the game but it's going to be used.
233
« on: April 23, 2015, 06:10:37 AM »
The issue is that everyone complains, but still buys the games. Vote with your wallet, not your internet rants. Oh yes we're such entitled pieces of shit because we're complaining about a 2015 game having less content than what a 2005 game has. There's nothing more entitled than complaining about being screwed over.

So, you're thinking of a conspiracy than some more sensical issue that might be tied to the complexity, time-cost of having 64 players in a match? This sort of entitlement is the most annoying factor that many people carry with them when it's about video games and the developer. It doesn't help that many developers (and EA) are also not so transparent with their development choices, nor properly explain the complexity of creating a game (outside of making some making-of videos that just serve as marketing tools, rather than actual information to understand what goes in a video game) I'm thinking the only reason why it's 40 players is because EA or DICE doesn't want Battlefront to kill the sales for Battlefield so they hinder it so it doesn't.

Isn't that the guy who rage quit after making more stupid statements, and being overly dramatic on social media? Who also was accused of rigging an indie competition for Fez? Who happened to be in a film stating that "he has no money" when he has an iMac, consoles and a large apartment filled with his hipster swag? "Programmers sure do hate when their efforts on a game engine go towards only one product and then never see the light of day again. Leave it the fuck alone, you amateur mongoloid." -Phil Fish

Video games are not paintings; you are not throwing acid on a painting when you mod a game. The game doesn't break for everyone, nor it needs millions of dollars in repairs and care to put it back in an art gallery or museum. You are changing the game in a way that it pleases you; that it makes it more fun for you and others who share a similar opinion. Understand what video games, mods and art are before making such a wild statement. Or a rational individual who respects art rather than tarnishes it.
