Many Android-based phones are similar to that, though. Google works hard to ensure that it has a tight grip on the App Store at least.
Yeah, Apple's pretty anal about locking down the software, but I always jailbreak and so there isn't that much of a limitation on what I can do with it, software wise. 1383

Gaming / Re: Feminists Get GTA 5 Pulled From Store Shelves in Australia« on: December 04, 2014, 06:57:38 AM »
I am not defending censorship, or banning video games, but my belief is that you cannot possibly argue against something without understanding it. Which involves tolerance, and willingness to learn the points behind such an action. Simply expressing my outrage concludes nothing.
It reads like your defending the censorship rather than being outrage and stupified by the lunacy of it. I mean I get that a couple people here may have leanings towards that camp, but didn't think anyone was that far over the fence. 1388
Gaming / Re: Feminists Get GTA 5 Pulled From Store Shelves in Australia« on: December 04, 2014, 06:46:38 AM »
Which as I said, the perception of how more linear media affects minds has matured to the point that shows like the Game of Thrones are not met with such distrust or misconception. Whereas, the one for gaming hasn't yet, and most of the people who express their concerns on either sides do so with cynicism, and little understanding of the core issue. Which further worsens the situation.
Bleh. Study after study has shown no correlation between violent media and violent actions. 1389
Gaming / Re: Feminists Get GTA 5 Pulled From Store Shelves in Australia« on: December 04, 2014, 06:35:08 AM »
Grand Theft Auto 5 isn’t exactly a video game that lacks discrimination, and especially the kind against women. Before throwing slurs, and insults towards the feminists who decided to push to remove the game from the shelves it is important to understand why you would want to remove GTA5 from the stores.
First of all, Grand Theft Auto 5 is a violent game. There’s no denial in that; the basic mission consists of an illegal or violent act against one or more people. Albeit it is driven by a narrative, and often the violence is restricted to Hollywood-like standards. Whereas the difference between video games, and films is that the way video games affect someone’s mind is still quite young compared to the extended academic research done on more linear entertainment like film, or books. Secondly, since there’s the lack of solid evidence and certainty of how video games affect someone’s mind; it should be taken in consideration that many young people far below the recommended age, mostly male and some female play this game every day. Since young people are exposed to the game’s silly world, where it has sarcastic references to the real world and events, and overtone drama which is further diluted with the storyline that gives a background to the action, and hence the violence which can take place during gameplay there’s a risk that this might affect negatively the player. Finally, based on the idea that many young people are exposed to the game, and on top of that the many misconceptions about the game industry, and general lack of expertise when it comes to how games affect people’s minds. It does bring out quite evidently that removing the game of the stores is a drastic solution rather than attempting to change the mentality of the stores or parents who sell or give these games to the kids. Another important aspect to note is that the feminist movement fights on many fronts, and many times It involves societal issues. If the education, and the mind of a young person is affected by Grand Theft Auto 5 then what it might mean for how they perceive the other, or their own gender from that point on? Whereas most people admit not to be affected, or that they haven’t been affected by what they experience through similar gameplays there is no solid argument besides statistical data, and perhaps a minority of people who perceive or feel otherwise. Hence why I do believe it’s all up in the air. Removing the game from the shelves is not the best solution, but it is the most drastic one to openly make a point; that games, like other medium should be mindful of social issues, and possibly the retailers both online and physical, and various organizations should be considerate of who they sell the game to, and their awareness of the age restrictions. 1390

It's the same model that Adobe adopted. However, Adobe's products are quite more costly than Microsoft Office.
I don't like the subscription thing they're doing now. 1396
The Flood / Re: Microsoft Office« on: December 03, 2014, 10:49:56 AM »
There are Office suites from other companies and are successful for their own reasons. There are also open source office suites that offer almost all features, or other features compared to Microsoft Office.
If Microsoft didn't make it, it would've been made by someone else. I don't see much reason to be too aghast by it all. 1397

Because the professor wanted a PowerPoint. 1398

That's also another sad story. Most people don't really even know how to use all of Google Drive's and Google Doc's features. Or that they exist in the first place. In my college there's an additional free-of-charge course that basically introduces such software to students. I am not sure whether it's sad that people don't know the full capacities of the multi-hundred hardware they own, or that they are not interested in at least properly learning how to use it in the first place.
In that case, why not just use Google Drive? 1399
The Flood / Re: Microsoft Office« on: December 03, 2014, 10:42:10 AM »
That's more or less your fault for not using the software you paid in applications outside for the purpose you needed at the time.
No, but that was pretty much all of my paycheck, and I ended up barely using it. 1400

STEM-related work also relies on the possibilities that Excel can give to collect and analyze data especially for its price and its availability on both Windows, and OS X. Microsoft Word can handle work with huge and very complex documents such as research documents nicely too. It all comes down to how proficient the user is.
This from what i have heard. The ability to use VLOOKUP will make you a wizard and god among your peers. Somehow anyone who knows how to use EXCEL proficiently will have an easy time in any workplace especially business. 1401
The Flood / Re: Microsoft Office« on: December 03, 2014, 10:39:20 AM »
It's not a bad price for that kind of software.
Yeah, but it cost me freaking $150. 1402
The Flood / Re: Microsoft Office« on: December 03, 2014, 10:37:19 AM »
Actually it feels silly that people in Computer Science have little to no idea about how to use the Office suite of software. Excel, and also Access are nice play and work grounds even in the professional world. I think most people are naive when it comes to actually using a computer, and software.

The picture thread maybe, since it is updated regularly, I'll be certain to bring that one up. Not so much about the birthday thread, since it feels really inactive.
Can I ask that the picture thread and birthday thread be pinned too? Member information i quite important, just as much as a humorous retelling of what has happened to this site. 1407

You make it sound as if we never pin user threads, some of your threads also were pinned and still are. It just happened that the person who made this thread was in the staff, and we merely discussed whether it should remain pinned based on the idea whether it is meaningful to be pinned or not.
Yes? 1409
The Flood / Re: The Sep7agon Analects [Updated: Featuring Meta]« on: December 03, 2014, 07:55:02 AM »
Are you serious?
I understand that the staff discussed it, but my point still remains and is a fact. If anyone else were to make this, it would never get pinned. You guys only had a staff discussion about it because a member of the staff made it and pinned it himself. 1410
The Flood / Re: The Sep7agon Analects [Updated: Featuring Meta]« on: December 03, 2014, 07:52:10 AM »
We had a discussion in the staff about it, and well, the outcome is that it is still pinned. My personal input was that it represents the community's story, and sort of makes it interesting to showcase it to members who may come into the forums. Since the Welcome new members thread, the music one, and the art one are pinned and have a similar function this one feels like a natural addition.
As I said, it was pinned because he is a monitor, literally no other reason. If anyone else were to make this, it would never get pinned. |
