Without even subtly implying any sort of racism, is it possible that the cultural differences between protagonists is what drives you away from anime? What I mean is that Japan has such a wildly different set of cultural norms and stories that you experience an almost uncanny valley-like response to the way anime characters interact, whereas in video games you're much more free to interact (or interpret scripted responses) how you see fit. I think this is what drives my dislike for a lot of anime, and I wonder if it does the same for you. Maybe it's the absurdity of anime -- from a western perspective -- that turns you off to it, which isn't really present in video games because you decide what your character does and feels.

Also, I fucking love The Goonies.
Yeah, actually, I think that's precisely it. "Uncanny valley-like" is a good way to put it.

Weebs obviously don't see it the same way, though, which is the confusing part. It's easy to just say "different strokes" but that doesn't really cut to the core of why and how they're able to enjoy it with the fervor that they do.

I'm inclined to think that 70-80% of it might just be sexual perversion, but maybe that's just negative bias talking again.
I might be able to "see it the same way" if this projected idea were more substantiated with specific scenes which evoked that sentiment. I could hazard a guess as to the sometimes strange or seemingly inconsequential things characters say to each other (which could be appropriated to cultural difference or to faulty translation). Your subsequent comment about sexuality makes me think you weren't thinking of dialogue, however.

Sexualized content wouldn't explain my "fervent" enjoyment of my favorite anime, given that they're essentially sexless (Ghibli Films and Mushishi).

I guess I didn't "complete" TTGL if I never bothered with the movie, but whatever.
Most people will assume you mean the anime anyway. People usually specify movies in a separate category from their shows, even if integral to the story (like the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, for instance). The rebuild movies also come to mind; people refer to them as the rebuild movies. Evangelion typically refers to the 26 episode show and the End of Evangelion, which is the only anime movie I can think of right now which is essentially considered part of the show.

i could watch something i know i'll hate and waste a lot of my time, or i could watch something with a premise that i like and be upset when i actually end up liking the stupid thing (which i won't)

Go after the premise you like and even if it's a waste of time you'll at least have more incentive to explain how anime perverted that premise with its bullshit. It would also provide more evidence that anime is shit.

Also, if people tell you to keep watching a show for x episodes until it "gets good" I'd take that opinion with a large grain of salt. In my entire anime experience only once have I stuck around with a show I didn't really care about to have it turn out good (Cowboy Bebop). If absolutely nothing strikes you about any aspect of the show in the first episode it's probably a dud.

Also, you are (not) going to enjoy the first episode of NGE. That I can forsee.

It makes exploring the environment a lot more fun
How?

Mainly because some parts are rarer than others and the hope of finding one drives you to search the place

I was in constant need of blades and binding in TLOU so where I would normally just sneak past everything, I went through each infected filled room to find stuff
Do you still consider those experiences fun in retrospect? A week after doing them? A month?

Maybe not fun per se but it definitely adds to the game

Crafting systems puts the player in control of what they have in their inventory so I appreciate the management aspect of it

When I watched Bebop I honestly didn't get into it until around episode 24. I continued watching it because I was "supposed" to like it. Nowadays if an anime doesn't grab me in the first episode I typically drop it. I have yet to rewatch Cowboy Bebop.

If you're not interested in bebop, you might try something else. Some other genre maybe depending on what you like.

Final boss was definitely a damage sponge and the weapon you get from his soul was a bit underwhelming. Certainly a lot of better weapons in the DLC. Still have to beat Midir who also seems to be a damage sponge.
Spoiler
If Gael is a damage sponge, Midir is a fucking sham-wow.

Is it just me or is this game falling appart ever since the DLC dropped?

>Enemies are falling through the ground and dying constanty.

>Weird graphical hiccups all the time (Frame's going to hell, all the textures turning green for a second)

>Two bosses just flat out broke today: First the Demon King just had some kind of vietnam flashback midfight and just stopped attacking for a while, and then when I got summoned to fight Wolnir, we broke his bracelets and then nothing, he was still alive.
I've gotten bad frame drops too, but within the last 4 days everything's been fine.

I accidentally skipped the tutorial on z-targeting, so I manually aimed the arrows to shoot its hands. The frustration would make me quit for weeks at a time. Took months to actually do it.

Oh yeah, how could I forget this cheeky bugger? Such screaming... much nostalgia.

Now there isn't really anything that does that, but being bad at souls PvP is a comparable experience.

Recommend me some anime with good dubs pls
I watch anime subbed. The only anime I watched dubbed were xxxHolic and Cowboy Bebop. You've probably already seen Bebop and I wouldn't generally recommend xxxHolic (the animation's not great and people are thrown off by CLAMP's proportions). I love Colleen Clinkenbeard as Yuuko in the english dub, however.

I completely forgot about it and haven't even seen it yet.
What is the most interesting thing about the movie? Least?

How did you come up with your score?

Most: animation style
Least: the use of particular anime storytelling tropes that I won't get into for spoiler reasons
Score: It's mostly arbitrary. I start at a 5/10 and try to add or subtract based on what I liked or didn't like. It was a beautifully animated movie, had a compelling story and characters, and despite having a fairly run of the mill body-swapping concept, it executed it in a unique and interesting way. Cons are that the music was generic anime fare, and the ending was stretched quite a bit, which is common in Mokoto Shinkai's movies, apparently.
What might convince me to see this movie before Garden of Words? Do you have a preference between the two?
I haven't seen either of them yet.

Strongly recommend 91 Days, Baccano and Black Lagoon.
If you like the tone of baccano ACCA is similar in it's smooth, somewhat jazzy atmosphere. I think ACCA is generally more reserved in tone, however. The protagonist and side characters are quieter and exude potential cunning, whereas Baccano's cast is more bombastic and memorable, I think.

I've heard some flak thrown at 91 days, but I don't remember what exactly. Why did you enjoy the show?

Watching a walkthrough makes playing Undertale redundant, yes. Since you've only seen the important bits it might still be worth your while to play it, since there's loads of little amusing side bits, jokes and references.
I fail to see how your response addresses the thread topic
I may not have understood what the topic is, then. You asked, "If you know Undertale's story, is it worth playing?", and I said "yes" and explained why. What else should I have said?
I think this is relevant to both of your responses:

I'm not asking whether or not watching the walkthrough obviates playing through a loss of novelty (although it's an interesting point I've considered), I'm asking whether the very notion of story as a selling point justifies investment in a medium distinguished by play, or if that even really matters in the context of gaming and why it does/doesn't.

depends on the game

undertale i have no clue

some games are gameplay only tbh
Yet those experiences are worth playing precisely because they're sold on gameplay. They could not function as another form of media without sacrificing participant agency.

I'm confused how you know what happens without having played it. Did you watch a Let's Play of it? Because the experience is much more than a plot synopsis.

Yes, Undertale is worth playing.
I did not watch a letsplay, I just watched random videos whose patchwork of story painted the full picture.
I fail to see how your response addresses the thread topic and I'd rather not guess because my stupidity will confuse both of us.
