I remember that sword being a pretty lame weapon, though. Dark Souls is weird in that a lot of the earlier weapons you get in the game are the best, and a lot of the weapons you think would be OP (like dragon or boss weapons) are complete and utter shit.
Sounds like my sense of humor.
I really think it's an intended sort of gag, because those weapons seem to have been deliberately made as shitty as they could possibly be.
Yeah, I like a developer with a mildly trollish sense of humor.

Artorias' weapons are essentially their own build through stat requirements. Not unless you've planned it out somewhat and have something to tide you over.
But the ring is necessary to beat the game.
It's a fight you ave to do if you plan on defeating Gwyn. And I think it's one of the better moments of the game. You see the effect you have as a player on an already dismal world and you start questioning.
