What finally clicked? What strategy did you end up using?
I usually focus on Orny unless I'm after the other armor set. Smough is just so stupid slow he's relatively easy to dodge. My problem before I think really came from using heavy armor. I don't know how the fuck you'd solo him that way. But also, I didn't have the best weapon at the time. I was still using that lightning spear you get in Sen's. So I play with pretty light armor, dodge Orny's bullshit, and mostly just get him away from Orny. Then Smough's final form is a piece of cake. UNLESS my timing is just a bit off and I get tagged by his buttslam, in which case I'm fucked. I like to think I can do it regularly now, but I haven't really tried.

That doesn't mean you should feel obligated to enjoy them. Games do age, contrary to what some believe. Some are timeless, others are not, others are improved through slight modernization (System Shock with mouse look).
A shit game is a shit game, though. If it's really that shitty then that tells me it really wasn't considered to be a good game, just a game that has potential.

Personally, I don't care for isometric games, for the most part. I also think the games have aged extremely poorly. I find it hard to get into the games at all, when the environments and everything feel so flat to me. I don't think it really has anything to do with my imagination, since I'm able to enjoy much older games that look FAR worse than that (Legend of Zelda NES). I just don't care for the first two at all. The only one I love is New Vegas.
