there's a reason pop music is designed to appeal to the masses
and "simple" songs like this
will never be on the radio
because they're actually complex lyrically, emotionally, thematically
the reason you don't hear swans on the radio is because most people wouldn't like it because most people want super dumbed down shit like AC/DC
You see, I'm more concerned about how a song makes you feel rather than the nuts and bolts of it. A song's structure plays a huge role in how the majority of people feel about music, but I suppose it's still largely subjective. But that's all I'm talking about.
New flash, Jazz used to be a popular genre of music. So, ignoring the lyrics because you're a mongoloid who thinks lyrics matter in music outside of like 4 genres, how is NIN any different than Lorde in complexity? This was on the radio. To my ears, it's no less complex than Reptile is.

Art can have objective measurable qualities though.
Maybe. Like what?

as far as i'm concerned, if an artist is convinced his art is bad, then his art is bad
LMFAO
He's actually right. Art is purely self-expression, not entertainment. That's why video games will never be art
Art is self expression, absolutely. Art has value when an emotional response is triggered in the person admiring it. I think Andy Warhol is shit garbage and I hate his art, but a lot of people say they get something from it, so it's still art. Shitty art? Maybe. Like I said, I think it's shitty, but a lot of other people don't, and I can't PROVE that it's shitty. A lot of artists hate their art, but I still like it, and a lot of other people like it, so I'm not interested in what the artist thinks. HP Lovecraft doesn't like his story Herbert West - Reanimator, but it's one of my favorite Lovecraft stories. I don't give a shit if he doesn't like it, because I do.

Well, clearly we have very different definitions of complex, because I'm speaking from a background in music theory, and in terms of theory, this song is no more complex than an AC/DC song. Elaborate.
It has like two (maybe three) chords in the whole song. The rhythm is 4/4. The chords are just your typical minor chords as far as I can tell. As far as technicality goes, it should be obvious there is no technical skill involved in the song whatsoever.
Why does technical skill matter? Why do chords matter? You've heard of the phrase "less is more".
I just don't understand why I should care if a song is complex according to music theory, when I could instead go by my clearly superior definition of complexity vs. simplicity.
But it doesn't matter. None of it matters. That's what I was saying from the beginning. In terms of the theory we've used to understand how certain types of music function, this song is not any more complex than an AC/DC song. My point is that song structure is irrelevant when critiquing music. Honestly, music critique is pretty much useless anyway, since in all likelihood it's at least LARGELY subjective.

I mean this argument is sorta like when neckbeards say Yngwie Malmsteen is the greatest guitar of all time because he plays really fast.
In reality, his lines are boring, his backing instrumentals are boring, and he really might as well be a sideshow entertainer, not a musician.

Lol.
So, please, using terminology from music theory, explain to me how those songs are not "basic?"
Keep in mind that the word "basic" goes beyond 4/4 time and verse/chorus/verse.
i'm not gonna go over every single song faggot holy goddamn
Take the song "Reptile." It has an extended instrumental intro that creeps along for almost a whole minute for the purpose of creating a perturbing, uneasy atmosphere. It consists of these odd and slightly unsettling ambient noises, like metallic clangs, like a piece of metal being dragged on concrete by someone too weak to carry it. Obviously, this isn't the most conventional way to begin a song, but it works very well in the song's favor.
After about a minute of that, the main beat crashes in. It should be self-explanatory why this beat is much more than "basic"--listen to the instrumentation. This is some industrial at its best. Is it the most complex beat in the world? No, but there's at least eight layers of tracks, which is one of Trent's trademarks--he likes to start out with a lot of layers--it's not just guitar, rhythm, bass, and percussion. There's a whole lot of synthesized layers as well, so you can listen to the song and almost get a new experience out of it every time.
I could go on and on
The lyrics are some of the best Trent has ever written, but you don't care about that because you're dumb
Here's another track that just adds layers upon layers of music until it just becomes a behemoth of noise.
Well, clearly we have very different definitions of complex, because I'm speaking from a background in music theory, and in terms of theory, this song is no more complex than an AC/DC song. Multiple layers don't make something complicated. Anyone with any rhythm at all can create layers in a song, especially with a beat. Harmonically this song is simple, rhythmically it sounds cool, but isn't complicated, and it's just 4/4 time. The lyrics are no different than edgy Metal lyrics as far as I'm concerned; hell, they are worse than a lot of edgy Metal songs I know. Regardless, it's a cool song. I hate Trent's voice, though.

Nine Inch Nails is "basic." Hardly.
He has more songs than Head Like a Hole and Closer.
There is nothing wrong with verse/chorus/verse, 4/4 or simple riffs. Repetitive choruses can be good or bad. Yeah. If the lyrics are good. As I stated.

There is a lot of music that is "basic" that is still stimulating. Then we obviously disagree on what "basic" means, because to me, basic music cannot be stimulating by definition.
In fact, pretty much MOST music is like that. I don't think you listen to any bands aside from Tool with complex (using that term loosely) song structure, and Tool isn't as complicated as fedora nerds like to pretend. Anything more "complex" than AC/DC's verse/chorus/verse, 4/4 at all times, simple riffs, and repetitive choruses is good enough for me. Because that shit is baby's first rock band material. I can handle simplicity if the lyrics are interesting or fun to sing along to, but AC/DC doesn't even have that.
and who the fuck says lyrics and structure can't be used to critique music that's arbitrary as fuck
Nine Inch Nails is "basic." There is nothing wrong with verse/chorus/verse, 4/4 or simple riffs. Repetitive choruses can be good or bad. Lyrics only matter in Hip Hop, Folk music and a few other areas of music. Song structure is meaningless, because a complicated song structure doesn't make a song better, and can even make it worse.

Why does everyone love to hate on AC/DC so much? Like give me an actual reason, not just 'hurr they suck'.
Vapid lyrics. Basic, unchallenging song structure.
Neither of these things matter.
They do to me, shithead.
They shouldn't because that's stupid
It's stupid to not want to listen to stupid songs about stupid shit?
and doesn't stimulate my ears because of how basic it is
If that's your taste that's fine, but it has no value when critiquing a band. There is a lot of music that is "basic" that is still stimulating. In fact, pretty much MOST music is like that. I don't think you listen to any bands aside from Tool with complex (using that term loosely) song structure, and Tool isn't as complicated as fedora nerds like to pretend.

Is the practice of fist-fucking not the exemplary case of what Deleuze called the "expansion of a concept?" The fist is put to a new use; the notion of penetration is expanded into the combination of the hand with sexual penetration, into the exploration of the inside of a body. No wonder Foucault, Deleuze's Other, was practicing fisting: is fist-fucking not the sexual invention of the twentieth century, a new model of eroticism and pleasure? It is no longer genitalized, but focused just on the penetration of the surface, with the role of the phallus being taken over by the hand, the autonomized partial object par excellence.
