You mentioned guitar solos, but guitar solos are always better when they're planned out. That's why I can't stand artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan--I don't get "feeling" out of their playing. I just get nonsense and long-winded pretentiousness. It's fucking boring. In general, guitar solos have always been my least favorite part of any rock song (even when they're written) simply because I find them extremely grating after awhile. I don't really find them impressive--they're annoying. Get back to playing that catchy riff, please.
This pretty much sums up the contention. There isn't really any middle ground-- if you hate improvisation, then there's no way to get my point across in a way you'll accept.
Fair enough.
At least now I can describe what I hate about it in more intelligent terms.
Freeform music is shit, and improvisational music is shit.
Wouldn't call Dun freeform though

Once you actually start enjoying free jazz there's no hope left for you as a person. And when you listen to Japanese noise music unironically, you need to hang yourself.

Side note: I noticed the pattern in this almost immediately, and I would prefer something like this to 123412341234, which is boring.

This is entirely subjective. I usually prefer solos when they're improvised (well) and not planned out. Hear the guitar playing melodic lines in this song? It's all improvisational except for the melody in the beginning which was written by Dizzy Gillespie. Even the melody is embellished (meaning he improvises his own nuance to the melody). If you don't like improvisation, that's fine, but you will never understand this music that way. The solo starts at about 1:38 if you're lost. The bass and drums are constantly improvising as well, just within a tighter structure, until the bass goes into its own solo (which you will recognize from the guitar getting quieter and the bass taking the forefront of the sound). The drums take a solo after the bass.

I was doing something else last night and was getting sidetracked by the dubtrack room, so I wasn't taking part in the argument with Dun as much as I would have liked. Instead, I'll make up for it now. YOU give no explanation of why the music is bad. You are incapable of articulately describing your disapproval of any music, which is why I find it such a pain to discuss music with you. It's a shame, because you're articulate when you're not talking about art. You didn't give me any valid criticism of Dun other than "it's just random notes" which is a factually incorrect statement, or you say "it's weird/dissonant" which means what? Why does that make it bad? Let me ask you, are these random notes? If you say yes, I can tell you that you are 100% factually incorrect. This is improvisation. All notes are handpicked on the spot by a musician who has been playing longer than you've been alive, who has a deep understanding of the way his music typically functions and behaves. He uses this knowledge to break rules and play things that sound "weird" to the average listener because that's what he intended. His music is largely meditative and he did not want his music to simply be catchy pop standards that get you some air time on the radio. Dun follows this idea at least partially, as they are clearly influenced by Jazz, and likely their music is partly based on improvisation. None of the notes to me sounded at all "random" or meaningless, though I will agree with you that it gets a tad pretentious at times, as often happens with music that reaches for something greater than what has been done before a thousand times.I appreciate Dun for trying something that was (at the time) somewhat unique and different, but I also understand how they seem to be slightly directionless with their compositions and it gets pretentious. Regardless, the notes they use are not random, they have a purpose, the artist wants them there and don't want to be confined to a box, so instead they move to another box (because you will always be confined to some sort of rule system when you compose) and compose works that better express what they were after in the first place. I like dissonance, but I also like melody and 4/4 metre and open guitar chords and pretty voices. You can always enjoy both. The love for dissonance and unique music stems from wanting to hear something new. It's not "normal" so it's exciting and mysterious. The songs become like an abstract piece of art, where it's harder to derive meaning from it, so you have to find it yourself. That is all there is to it. I said "we just like it and that's all you need to know" because it's true. That is all there is to it. Why the flying fuck do you like Limp Bizkit? THAT is a band I can't stand. Horrible composition, terrible vocals, awful lyrics, and hell, even obnoxious band members. THAT is true dissonance to me, the kind that is abrasive to my goddamn soul and almost physically hurts me to listen to. Music is largely subjective and if you don't understand bands like Dun, it's very possible you never will. Now I am going to leave you with some pleasant, melodic beauty
