The Flood / Re: For the ones here who listen to Tool
« on: December 11, 2014, 04:46:34 PM »
Tool is not Metal
they all sound like metal to me

you keep talking about what doesn't make metal, but that doesn't help me understand what DOES make metal

because even the "punk" example you gave sounds   e x a c t l y   like what i thought metal was
I don't care what YOU think because the MAJORITY thinks you are wrong.

Metal is something more easily described through the music, but a band like Infest is all about speed, violence, anger, hatred, sloppiness, and politically charged lyrics. That is more or less what Punk was ABOUT in the beginning.

Metal is not politically charge most of the time, or if it is it's more subdued. Metal was about creating a thematic idea akin to Horror films and high fantasy. Black Sabbath's self titled song is more or less a horror movie in song form. It is not meant to be fast, angry, or anything.  It's just slow, heavy, and evil sounding. Incantation is taking what Black Sabbath did and putting a shitload more distortion on it, using a different vocal style, and making it slightly faster in some places. Incantation is the same idea but more advanced in its development.

Infest is taking what bands like Black Flag did, but they decided to do the same thing Incantation did by advancing it, making it louder, faster, angrier, and more hateful.  It's not a horror movie, it's a political statement through violence. Now, granted, some Metal bands add elements of hatred of humanity and similar themes you find in Punk.  They ARE closely linked, but mostly you can hear these bands that straddle the line between Punk and Metal.  Tool does not straddle the line, it simply is NOT Metal. Their themes, composition, vocals, instrumentation, etc. do not fit with the Metal framework. Iron Maiden DOES because even though they are upbeat, fast paced, and less heavy, they have the same frame of mind as Black Sabbath in that they want to be heavy, they want to shred, and they wanna tell stories, not make political statements.

Oh that brings me to a good point as well.

Something like Iron Maiden is still Metal in the same way that Incantation is Metal because of the compositonal structure and mindset behind the two bands. Riff based, heavy, mostly keeping a 4/4 rhythm, the manipulation of intense vocal techniques (gutterals versus falsettos), etc.

Not particularly liking Metal does not mean I don't know what metal is either way.
you should still be able to give me ONE name, if you know what it is
I know for a fact that he occasionally listens to Iron Maiden

And I don't really listen to Metal, not like on purpose. I just don't really know any bands I really like that are metal.
...

and that makes you an authority on what metal is.

i am so glad that i wasted my time with you
K, Verb.  Running the risk of sounding like a pretentious falsie, I actually know what I am talking about MORE SO than chris because I've explored the Metal scene thoroughly for years, and I can tell you NOBODY in the Metal scene thinks Tool is Metal. Probably because they aren't.

Tool would arguably be Progressive Rock, but more in the veign of Pink Floyd than King Crimson. Tool has a much grittier sound, though, more akin to Grunge, but not Metal.

This is Metal

This is Tool:

Distorted guitars do not make something Metal, nor do harsh vocals. By that logic, Punk bands are Metal  because they share the qualities. Infest:
YouTube

Is not metal, because it doesn't follow the compositional structure of Metal, nor does Tool. The lines only really blur in the case of genres like Grindcore:

I've heard it said somewhere that Puscifer was a sort of 'fuck you' to all the really offensive-type dumbass metalheads who listen to maynard's other stuff.
Hmm, I haven't heard a song from then where that's what they're kind of saying, but I don't know, I still need to listen to more of them
It's a stylistic thing, to my mind. Can you imagine a really elitist metalhead enjoying anything about puscifer? It's nothing a tool fan would expect.
but Tool isn't Metal either.
Metalheads like tool, ya nitpicker
Rarely.

The only album I can honestly say that I still enjoy as a whole would be Demon Days by Gorillaz, other wise I rarely bother with listening through an entire album.
You make me sick

I wonder what Ryle looks like.
Probably a rather classy fellow. A monocle perhaps?
He looks like a white kid with goofy hair from Florida.

Actually, he kinda looks like Adam Lanza but less autistic
