The Flood / Faux Cyrillic Font
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:21:31 AM »
Anyone know where I can get a faux Cyrillic font that I could use on a Google Slideshow? I'm doing a presentation on the armed forces of the Russian Federation, and I figured that would be a nice touch.

The Flood / Electric Boogaloo
« on: February 21, 2016, 02:02:07 PM »
YouTube

"Electric Boogaloo" is a phrase seen quite often, but I don't think many people know what it's from. The source of the term is the sequel to the popular Breakdance film "Breakin'", titled "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo". Both films were produced by the film company Cannon Films, and that brings us to the subject of this thread; a hilarious documentary about the Cannon Film Group, showcasing it's absurdity, lack of taste, and the eccentric nature of the company's owners, the Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yorum Globus. The only real issue the documentary suffers from is that it makes the chronology of events somewhat confusing, but that's a minor issue.

Now, I must warn you, the documentary is highly explicit, containing scenes from some of the sleaziest movies of the 80's. However, the sheer hilarity of the situations and people described was funny enough for me to disregard the sexually explicit content. The documentary is available on Netflix, and I highly recommend you guys check it out.

The Flood / A Musical Collaboration I'd Love to See
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:37:25 PM »
I'd like to see a collaboration between Taylor Swift and Rammstein.

Think about it. Swift in black tactical boots, pants, and a zip-up tactical vest, her arms smeared with engine grease. She's wearing matte black lipstick, a hairnet and/or a Stahlhelm, and she's wielding a forearm-mounted flamethrower on each arm. If we're going all-out, then throw in a couple bright white LED's surgically implanted inside of her mouth. It'd be hilarious.

Discuss.

The Flood / History with Mmmmm Napalm
« on: February 07, 2016, 11:34:17 PM »
I'd like to start a series of threads, to be created on a whenever-the-fuck-I-want basis, about various historical events and figures. History is my academic and personal passion, and I would like to express that here. I understand that in all likelihood no-one here will care or possibly even read these threads, but I am apathetic towards such indifference.

To kick off these threads, I would like to cover one of my favorite historical figures, and potentially my favorite European statesman in history; the mighty Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. The man who forged the German Empire through the expert usage of extraordinary cunning, and incredible foresight.

Bismarck is truly one of the most cunning statesmen in history. His realpolitik is brilliant in it's ruthless pragmatism. Indeed, I would say I love Bismarck because he's so damn dastardly. The man was an unparalleled manipulator; he carefully manipulates events and circumstances in order to orchestrate three wars: the Danish Prussian war (1864), the Seven Weeks' War (1866), and finally, the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, which ended with the German Empire, a united Germany, being declared within the Palace of Versailles itself. A final declaration of German supremacy over French idiocy.

How did Bismarck start that final conflict? The magnificent bastard edited a telegram (documenting a discussion between the King of Prussia and the French ambassador), in order to make it look as though each of the parties in the conversation had insulted one another, with anger in the national scale occurring on both sides. The French, in their arrogance, declared war, and in response Prussia, the rest of the German states rallying behind them, mobilized it's army. The French force was crushed by the superior Prussian army.

I'm not going to go too in depth; I have other things to do, and late 19th century politics can be a rather complicated subject. Thus, I will leave you with a link to a helpful resource, and Bismarck's most famous quote.

Here is list of all episodes of BBC radio's stellar radio series, Germany: Memories of a Nation. In regards to Bismarck, I would recommend Bismarck The Blacksmith, but all episodes are wonderful. In particular, Luther and a Language for All Germans is a wonderful, informative, and short listen.

And finally, here's the final segment of Bismarck's famous speech:

"The position of Prussia in Germany will not be determined by its liberalism but by its power ... Prussia must concentrate its strength and hold it for the favorable moment, which has already come and gone several times. Since the treaties of Vienna, our frontiers have been ill-designed for a healthy body politic. Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided - that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849 - but by iron and blood (Eisen und Blut)."

Dammit I hate when you leave about people's socio-political stances. Especially seeing as I disagree with just about everyone I meet.

She's definitely still my favorite teacher, and I know that to be successful socially you have to learn to look past people's socio-political positions, but I'll be damned if I didn't experience a terrible sinking feeling in my stomach when she said that.

The Flood / Beards
« on: January 31, 2016, 06:19:46 PM »
Today I realized something.

If I'm to pursue teaching high school as a career, then I'm going to need a beard. If I start after four years of college then I'll only be 23, and thus won't look very old, which means that kids won't see me as an authority figure and thus won't respect me. A beard has the potential to change that; a sufficiently handsome, rugged one can age a man ten years.

There's just the issue of whether or not I can grow a beard that doesn't suck. I don't want some shitty goatee or pencil strap. I want a real beard, like Commander Riker's beard.

Discuss facial hair and what styles suck and don't suck.

The Flood / Well, I finally made a decision
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:20:48 PM »
For the last few months I haven't had any semblance of a plan in regards to college.

On Monday, that changed. I've made the decision to apply to the University of North Texas. The school is known for having an excellent education program, which had a considerable influence upon my decision seeing as I plan to major in either education or history.

Granted, I don't know if I'll be accepted or not. However, my school district supplied each of it's high school students with a free account on a site that deals with online transcripts, sending them to colleges, and so forth. The site also calculates ones chance of getting into a given college based upon the information included in ones academic records. The site gave me a 94% chance of getting accepted into UNT, based upon the academic records of other students accepted or denied by the college. Of course, you can't completely trust percentages and assumptions like that, but I think I have a decent chance of getting accepted by the school.

The Flood / Rest In Peace, Jason Wingreen
« on: January 01, 2016, 06:06:54 PM »
Jason Wingreen, the original voice of Boba Fett, died today.

Wingreen's contribution has been all but erased the thanks to Lucas's revisionist Special Edition bullshit. Wingreen and his work, as small as it may have been, do not deserve to be dismissed and discarded, especially considering the popularity of the character and the superior nature of Wingreen's voice over in comparison to the Morrison re-recording.

Wingreen will always be the voice of Boba Fett to me.

The Flood / I saw The Hateful Eight in 70mm
« on: December 30, 2015, 02:37:37 AM »
I absolutely hated it.

Not the presentation, which was the reason I went to go see the film, and did indeed enjoy. I was very excited to experience the old cinema presentation and atmosphere, what with the old 70mm film reel, the presence of an overture to start the film, and later an intermission, and so forth. That I enjoyed immensely.

The film itself I absolutely hated. I knew it was a Tarantino movie, and all the things that brings to the table, but it ended up being far worse than I had expected. The tone of the movie screwed with my head and resulted in myself feeling emotionally and mentally drained. Maybe that was the point, but regardless I didn't like it. I was confused as to how Tarantino wanted me to feel about certain characters during certain scenes. For example, the scene involving Samuel L. Jackson's "revelation" to the old man. I couldn't tell if I was supposed to feel as though Jackson's character was a badass for doing this horrible thing because "white people bad" or something. If so, I didn't; the scene was rather upsetting to me.

Basically, while the 70mm "old cinema" presentation was very neat, I absolutely hated the film itself and would not recommend it to people who are not big Tarantino fans.

Basically what I'm asking is, is the following greentext accurate?

The Flood / Help with DVD Writing
« on: October 22, 2015, 05:19:28 PM »
I want to burn Harmy's Despecialized Edition onto a DVD, but I don't really know what to do.

Could someone help me? I need to know what client to use (my friend suggested something called Deluge), and give me instructions on what blank DVDs I should get, how to burn the video onto DVD's, the total number of DVD's I would need for the film, and so on.

Here's the writer I was looking at.

And the DVDs I thought would work.

Your help is appreciated, I'm doing this to introduce some poor girl to Star Wars for the first time, and I didn't want shitty CGI to ruin her first Star Wars experience.

The Flood / High School is Ending and I Don't Want It To.
« on: October 17, 2015, 05:03:37 PM »
This year is my senior year of high school, and I'm not looking forward to leaving whatsoever. At this point, my school is where I feel most at home. The comforting repetition of the schedule and seeing the same faces every day; I enjoy it. I don't want to leave, but I know it has to happen. Worst of all is the thought of never seeing my teachers again. I consider many of them  some of my best friends, as pitiful as that sounds.

I know that life has to go on, but as someone who hates change I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

Gaming / I've been looking through some Battlefront text files
« on: October 13, 2015, 10:28:55 PM »
Here's what looks to be the complete list of weapons. I have added a picture of the weapon in question for each one:

RT-97C

"The RT-97C is a versatile heavy blaster, fitted with optics to allow use at long range."

A280

"The A280 is a sturdy and powerful blaster rifle that has a high rate of fire, excellent damage and long range reach.  It has been adopted by the Rebel Alliance as its main battle rifle."

SE-14C

"The SE-14C is a blaster pistol that fires 5-round bursts, making it ideal for close-quarter combat."

T-21

"The T-21 is a robust heavy blaster that delivers massive damage at long ranges. Its only drawback is its slow rate of fire and lack of optics."

CA-87

"The CA-87 is a retro-fitted Jawa blaster that is extremely deadly at short range, but near useless at medium and long range."

EE-3

"The EE-3 is an optically fitted Blaster Rifle capable of 3-round burst fire at long ranges."

DH-17

"The DH-17 is a fully automatic blaster pistol. Its high rate of fire, along with reasonable accuracy, make it an ideal weapon for medium-range combat."

DLT-19

"The DLT-19 is a heavy blaster with an excellent rate of fire that deals heavy damage at long range, capable of pinning down troops and taking out large groups of enemies."

DL-44

"The DL-44 is one of the most powerful blaster pistols in the galaxy. It delivers massive damage at close range, but overheats quickly."

E-11

"A powerful and accurate blaster rifle, the E-11 is ideal for use in all environments. It has been adopted as the standard weapon of the Imperial Forces."

A280C

"The A280C is a sturdy and powerful blaster rifle that has a high rate of fire and excellent firepower. Modified from the A280 rifle, it was the favored weapon of Alliance commandos."

T-21B

"The T-21B is a more refined version of the T-21 model, with added scopes for zoom capability and a slower fire rate to ensure high precision at long range."

I couldn't find any pictures of this thing aside from an accessory for a Hot Toys 1/6 scale Spacetrooper, which is a sexy figure I must say. The accessory looks like a T-21 with a scope, so I think that this is probably what we'll be getting in the game.

Looks like they scoured the original trilogy for every blaster seen. I'm satisfied, this looks to be a healthy selection of blasters. Obviously this isn't a massive list on par with, say, Battlefield 4's list of weapons, but DICE has limited themselves to what is seen in the original trilogy. This looks to be an appropriate amount of guns for an arcade-y, casual shooter, with each of them fitting a distinct performance archetype.

Furthermore, it appears that some weapons will be Star Cards. This is not a complete list, this is just what stood out to me and wasn't in the beta.

Pulse Cannon
"An incredibly powerful long-range rifle utilizing the frame assembly of a DLT-20A, the so-called "pulse cannon" has become the weapon of choice for many sharpshooters. The power of its shot is dependent on the charge-up time."

Looks like this is going to be one of our long range weapons, and based on that short description it sounds like each shot can be charged, so perhaps this will work somewhat like a Spartan Laser that can be fired at any time, but is more powerful the longer you charge it.

Scout Pistol
"A light side-arm effective at taking out opponents at close range. Quickly loses its capabilities at longer distances. The Scout Pistol is the perfect close range wepaon to switch to when your primary weapon is in overheat."

As those who have played the game will know, you can only have a primary blaster, no sidearms. Judging by the description of the scout blaster, it appears that a sidearm is a Star Card option that may be chosen, but the scout blaster is the only sidearm available.

Bowcaster
"Depending on the charge-up time, the Bowcaster fires 1 or more explosive bolts in a horizontal arc."

Here's the text dump I used.
