I see communism as more of a global renaissance type of system. When everyone is free to pursue their interests without their life focused around working 9-5 to just pay rent, you'd have lots of room to explore and innovate. At the very least we'd probably see the arts flourish more. Then again, the works of Shakespeare were made to pay a meager wage, so I'm not sure. I don't see communism ever being functional on a state scale until war is obsolete and healthcare advances significantly.

So to answer your question, I think technological advance is just a human condition, and an evolutionary one. We're going to progress regardless of our artificial economic system.

Yelling and swearing has been phased out of Navy, Air Force, and Army boot camps for several years now due to its ineffectiveness. It continues in the Marine Corps because they have such a heavy emphasis on indoctrination in order to allow the Marines to operate calmly under the stress of combat.

But to answer your question, no, drill sergeants and drill instructors aren't leaders. They do not lead recruits, they break them down to be built back up. That's not leadership, that's indoctrination (which I'm not saying is a bad thing). Not to mention that the military is entirely voluntary, and consists of adults. It's just a very poor comparison.

I have been hit by extension cords, sticks, belts, and hands. All in all it made me a better person.
