All you need to know is that he's wrong.

Well, Thomas Aquinas could've told him that 800 years ago.

Theology hasn't asserted the ontological argument for hundreds of years.

I don't, actually. I've never read any of his works, and I don't really count his Wikipedia page and a few links , like I just read, as such. So he took the original argument and tried to justify it using modern logic techniques? I haven't studied modal logic so I'm not familiar with it.

TOS did a lot for social equality and progress, and was also a blast to watch because of the goofy acting and plot.

TNG is amazing because it also tackled a lot of social issues, while still having an incredibly series of story arcs and character development. Of the two, I definitely prefer TNG.

That is a terrible idea because users like DigitalZesty, Door, and Elegiac exist.

Locked threads would not count towards the posts.

Until the NC constitution no longer says I cannot hold public office, yes, we are oppressed.

So they only want to elect upstanding citizens and not edgy teenagers?
You know that's a silly thing to say.
Yeah it was a joke.

They should be able to run for office. Just don't be upset when someone slams the door in your face for being an atheist.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to be upset about that, though I'm afraid I'd come off as hypocritical if I say I probably wouldn't vote for someone who was a serious Wiccan, Satanist, Scientologist, or other extreme humanist/naturalist philosophy.

And to clarify, there is no state in the U.S. that bars you from office for being an atheist. NC has a law that has been defunct for over 50 years because of court precedence.

I've known two people that were kicked out of the house for converting from Islam to Christianity; this happens for a multitude of reasons. Oppression is typically systemic and authoritative. It's the same reason extremist feminism has blossomed on places like Tumblr, or any other claim of oppression in wealthy, western countries.

Are atheists being oppressed? No. Is there isolated discrimination for almost every class or culture? Of course.

Sincerity shouldn't have any bearing on your judgement. . .

I'm usually pretty reserved on forums. If I get into long discussions, it's usually a rant or argument. In addition, there have already been threads asking about encouraging thread creation.

So how about this: keep the 3000 post count for a title bar (though I still think that's high), but also count posts that are in response to your created threads. Yes, that means posts will be double-counted for different users, but I'd much rather take the time to make interesting threads than try to knock out 3000 posts relatively quickly.

Watched one episode of Arrow a while ago and shrugged it off as another CW show where super rich and hot people be dramatic. Everything was cheesy and green-tinted and it seemed like a really shallow cash-grab.

But holy crap, this show is actually really good. Usually first seasons suck, so if that means the next ones are better I'm looking forward to it.

The beauty of Christianity is that all the documents are there to be criticized.

What about the lost books of the bible?

New Testament apocrypha? What about them? They're not canonical, and if you don't have sufficient evidence of their existence or even reliable copies, I don't see reason to put any trust in them.

That argument is exactly the one that refutes the legitimacy of the Book of Mormon.

Yeah it's important to discuss the failings of how this has been handled, but saying stuff like "it's airborne because if someone with ebola sneezes on a plane it will be transmitted" is a load of fearmongering crap. It's about as easy to transmit ebola as it is to transmit HIV.

I don't believe in the supernatural, at least in the contemporary sense of it. Even as a Christian, the Bible doesn't talk much about supernatural acts. We consistently see God work in the realm of the created universe. When miracles do happen it's a huge affair, and even those could probably be explained with a deeper knowledge of the physical universe and the extent and nature of God. For instance there are sound explanations for a flood, the plagues, and more. But the real issue is that miracles are inherently exceptional to nature; Yet, so was fire to Homo erectus.

“Miracles are not contrary to nature but only contrary to what we know about nature. ” -Augustine

3. We're not a cult. We are Christian.

I don't think it does anything to pointlessly insult someone, and I don't think labeling it as a cult accomplishes anything. The practices I've experienced (forced mission trips, outcasting those that refuse to do one or fail to finish it, extremely exclusivistic practices such as the practices in temples, etc) are largely cultish, but who does it help to argue about the term?

As for Christianity, there are a few basic tenets that define the various denominations. First, there is only one God, which Mormonism denies. Second, encompassing the first and second commandments, is that it is wrong to believe in false gods. There are several more that are absolutely contradicted by Mormonism. Here's a list of some other doctrinal conflicts:

-The Book of Mormon's supremacy to the Bible
-Satan and Jesus are "spirit brothers"
-God used to be a man
-You may become a god in the afterlife
-God is married to another goddess and literally procreates with her to make spirit children
-The Trinity is three distinct beings, rather than a trinity of one.
-Denial of the virgin birth, a critical fulfillment of prophecy heralding Jesus as the Messiah
-Without Joseph Smith there is no salvation, and no salvation outside of the LDS church
-Lack of believe in salvation by grace alone
-Lack of believe in the adequacy of Jesus in the act of salvation
-No salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet
-Acts are greater than grace in salvation

The fact is that the Book of Mormon is easily refuted as viable using historical concepts. Nobody from Jerusalem traveled to America and established a colony. Native Americans originated from a different continent. Skin color is not tied to ancestors' sins (I know this has been addressed by the church, but it's just backpedaling).

The beauty of Christianity is that all the documents are there to be criticized. We have extremely old copies of the texts. The textual accuracy of all the known copies is so strong that it's a historically accepted document and is literally the most consistent and accurate chronology in existence. We don't have that with the book of mormon, because the original tablets were "lost". Mormonism contradicts the word of God, therefore it's not Christian.

"But we believe in Jesus, and that's all the matters."

James 2:19 "You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble."

Occasionally, yeah. Very rarely. It's kind of disturbing how vivid it can be, sometimes to the point that I'll get up and leave whatever situation I'm in. Weirdly enough, I get angry pretty easily but I never have the urge to harm anyone when I'm like that.

I haven't heard any convincing arguments justifying any abortions that aren't in situations of immediate threat to the life of the mother or the fetus.

I consider it morally repugnant and an incredibly poor alternative to the consequences of raising the child. I also think it speaks volumes for us as a society of such wealth that we tolerate and defend the slaughter of over 50 million humans, about as many as the combined efforts Stalin, Lenin, and Hitler.

Those ridiculous laws are what's keeping us from ruining our planet and a possible Tsjernobyl 2.0. Nuclear energy is definitely promising, but it needs to be regulated well. Not saying we're at that point yet, but our current situation is better than allowing people and governments to take extreme risks with nuclear material.

Absolute nonsense. Nuclear power would be FAR more safe if we weren't using reactors from decades ago. If the government wasn't holding progress back we'd have plenty of energy and plants that never failed. Not to mention we're close to fusion energy. Even the waste can be recycled and rendered harmless with plasma.
Fucking fusion has always been a technology that's 20 years away. I don't think we'll see it implemented until 2050.

Fission is viable right now, and has been for over 50 years. There are already two functional fusion reactors in existence.
Yes and they don't output more energy than we out into them so right now they're practically useless. Call me when they reach ignition and become self sustaining.

This is such a narrow-minded view of things. It's very typical of today's society that's so interested in exciting headlines but not in the actual process of science. Princeton has a functioning fusion reactor that is near break-even reactions. If that doesn't excite the hell out of you, you don't really care about the subject. It's so extremely wasteful to just disregard progress like this. Not to mention that this is just fusion -- we could, right now, fulfill the entire world's electrical needs with fission. Fission is relatively simple, clean, and efficient.
