I vowed that I wouldn't contribute my hard earned money towards buying an Xbox One, so I robbed a bunch of hobos for the cash. It took a pretty long time, but I think it was worth it in the end.

Serious / China's one-party system is superior to democracy

Or so says this guy on TED talks. I know TED is not always the enlightened, scientific platform it tends to advertise itself as, but this just screams propaganda. I'm not super familiar with China's current affairs or recent history, but this really struck me the wrong way.

I read a few responses, so I'm confident that the guy is basically full of shit, but I was just wondering what your thoughts are (preferably without looking up rebuttals and paraphrasing those points here).

« on: October 07, 2014, 12:28:51 PM »
First of all, I think it's a catchy song and I like that it's not just a cookie-cutter love song.

However, I think the feedback it's garnered is really bizarre. There's a change of attitude in society about rejecting the notion that women have to be skinny to be pretty. This song isn't about fat-acceptance, it's about acceptance of your body, using herself as a role model. Yeah she's not obese but keep in mind this is criticizing the perspective of media that considers Jennifer Lawrence a "fat actress".

It's not about fat acceptance or skinny shaming; she frames the "skinny shaming" as a joke, and shows that she understands the psychology behind that lifestyle by saying "I know you think you're fat but...every inch of you is perfect".

I dunno. I'm not one to take a liking to pop music, so it irritates me when songs with some actual value come along and then get blasted hypocritically from both sides.

Yeah, and not teaching music theory in a math class is also limiting their education. As a Christian, I don't even want creationism in a science class. Western Creationism is a joke of a philosophy.

« on: October 06, 2014, 05:58:31 PM »
I lift and think a solid routine can be important, but whenever these guides are listed it's always from a BB/powerlifter/etc. perspective. There are plenty of awesome ways to be fit out there that don't revolve around weightlifting routines. And specializing in an area of fitness for a reason other than to look good isn't a bad thing, either.

I don't really see the value in doing this to your kids, and screwing with their emotions for attention on YouTube is reprehensible, in my opinion. I did love seeing the one example of kids not caring that their parents did it because they love them anyway.

Serious / Re: Using nukes to blow up asteroids
« on: October 05, 2014, 04:29:50 PM »
Let's clear some misconceptions about nuclear weapons detonating in space:

1. There would be no physical blast. Shockwaves are a result of pressure moving particles in the atmosphere; when something is destroyed by an explosion, it's because it's pushing huge quantities of air at a very high velocity into it. In space, there is no air so there's nothing to carry a blast. This is also why sound doesn't travel in space; sound is a reverberation of particles in an atmosphere.

2. There would be no transfer of heat because that radiation travels through a medium also. You could be right next to a nuclear explosion and, aside from shrapnel and the other forms of radiation, you'd feel nothing.

3. The significant threat is nuclear radiation, which is normally dispersed through the air. It's still a huge hazard in-atmosphere, but in space the radiation will travel outward until it hits something.

So no, nukes won't really do anything to an asteroid. The Armageddon tactic was actually pretty sound, since drilling into the asteroid will mean the explosion will attenuate off of the asteroid's tiny atmosphere of trailing gases and ice.

IUD

I really hope not. I'd much rather take a pill than get something surgically implanted somewhere.
To each their own, I guess. A simple procedure that is good for 10+ years is preferable to having to take a pill every day, IMO

I certainly agreed that men need something besides condoms to rely on.

What's your definition of simple? An IUD is just inserted up the vagina. Guys don't have a (relatively) wide  hole to put stuff into.

The only reason why she doesn't want to date me aside from feeling that I'm better then her, is that I'm a few months younger (and yes, it is that stupid.) But it's not like she doesn't want to, she says and openly talks about how I make her happy and how I would be an amazing boyfriend, she just can't get over that fact. It's weird.

This is code for "I don't like you for very much outside of sexual thrill".

Right now you're an emotional dildo to her. Don't be an emotional dildo.

So here's the dealio:

I just got engaged; been dating this girl for over five years. Just before I met this girl, there was another girl I was really into but didn't have the balls to ask out, even though I knew she'd say yes. Ended up following similar career paths and I'd see her almost daily, and the conflict of still feeling attracted to someone (and not just physical attraction) while being in a committed relationship is really hard.

Just let her go. End your contact with her. She's poison to your soul, and you should move on.

Everyone hear is under the impression that because I have money I'm not allowed to not be happy.

Literally no one thinks that.

Read what everyone is saying. Somehow me having money somehow dictates everything I do and my demeanor.

It sounds like a lot of people are claiming that because you have so much money that you should be happy. I'm not drowning in tears of sympathy for the unhappiness of someone whose car costs more than my college education, but my recommendation is to get involved in your community somehow. If you're religious, try volunteering at your church. Find a social group to become a part of. Find value outside of the typical rat race of work and school.

Serious / Re: Do you prefer Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens
« on: October 01, 2014, 05:22:36 PM »
I respect them both as leaders in their field, but I find them both extremely abrasive in their own ways and don't like the cult of personality they've engendered. Specifically, The God Delusion was a poorly researched and shallow hissy-fit of a book.

Hitchens is pretty objectively a more-skilled debater than Dawkins.

How does it feel in terms of repetitiveness? Assassin's Creed tends to be very repetitive in its mission style, though the settings add diversity. I was getting the vibe that it would have a few types of missions that would be used over and over.

How long do you see yourself continuing to play this game?

Serious / Re: Why don't we have a one world currency by now?
« on: September 30, 2014, 04:36:31 PM »
There's no need, and it's a logistical nightmare.

You'd end up keeping inflation rates, exchange rates, commodity values, etc., so basically all you'd have is a universal currency in appearance alone. You can make a standard set of bills and coins, but you'll never make them equal everywhere.
