Serious / Netanyahu declares victory« on: March 18, 2015, 12:06:36 AM »
...A bit early.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/netanyahu-gains-edge-in-official-vote-count-1426581793?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories Quote TEL AVIV—Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pulled ahead of his main challenger in Israeli elections with most of the votes counted early Wednesday, a strong showing after he hammered away at security issues in the final hours of the campaign. Can't say I'm surprised. Israel wants a strong stance on Palestine, and Herzog couldn't give them that. It's unfortunate that he's resolved to not entertain a two-state policy in the future, though. 6603
Serious / Cultural Appropriation« on: March 17, 2015, 09:47:33 PM »
Cultural appropriation is the concept of one culture adopting the culture of another, either for novelty or a genuine attempt to imitate it. You see this a lot, almost exclusively used against white people, to argue against minority culture being integrated into the majority. A lot of people see something like a white rapper or a white hip-hop dancer as cultural appropriation. A more reasonable example is the use of stereotype costumes during Halloween.
One of the more tolerable videos I could find to explain the concept: YouTube In some cases I can see this as a legitimate claim. When something is degrading, like celebrating stereotypes, it's harmful and insulting. But the idea that a white guy can't enjoy or participate in someone else's culture without it being 'appropriation'? Ridiculous. What're your thoughts on this? 6604

I've read numerous articles on this, and gave up on reading the #changethecover posts after about 100.
It's fucking stupid on both sides. I agree that the SJW side is particularly obnoxious in this case. 6605
Serious / Re: Your friendly reminder that these people have ignited a culture war« on: March 17, 2015, 09:05:21 PM »
And on the other hand, there are a lot of women on Twitter talking about how it was a wrong and cowardly decision to pull the cover.
IMO, both sides are wrong in their reasoning. This cover shouldn't be pulled because it is triggering or offensive, but neither should it be kept because it shows that a) comic fans, especially the women, can handle graphic material and b)Batgirl isn't weak, or what have you. It should be pulled because it's totally inconsistent with the themes of the series. That's it. You and anyone else turning this into a SJW debate are totally off-base and wrong. There are three sides to this: people that think it's offensive, people that think it should be kept to spite SJW extremism, and people that recognize how poor of a cover it is for the series. Sides 1 & 2 are wrong, and I've seen just as much of #3 as I have of the first two. 6606
Serious / Re: Your friendly reminder that these people have ignited a culture war« on: March 17, 2015, 08:43:49 PM »Okay, but that's not why the cover was pulled though. Yes, it was, it was pulled because of online complaints from the fanbase that recognized how poorly it fits the series. It takes a fun hero and instead strips her power and reflects an arc about her being sexual assaulted. The series was moving away from the ultra-gritty and violent funk DC has itself in to be something lighthearted and fun; this is not where the cover belongs. It's a great piece of art and a brilliant homage, but the artist is out of his mind if he thinks it's a good cover for the series. 6607
Serious / Re: Your friendly reminder that these people have ignited a culture war« on: March 17, 2015, 08:33:20 PM »So what you're essentially saying is female characters cannot face any kind of genuine adversary because their character biographies involved tragedy, therefore it would be in bad taste? Aren't you kind of placing female victimization on a pedestal there? I'd wager that's more sexist than depicting the actual rape if I'm being honest.See, I didn't respond to this initially because I knew you'd make a response like this. It's just asinine. You know have I very little tolerance for SJW bullshit, so it's frustrating that you would make such a dumb response. Obviously that is not what I'm saying at all. I have no problem with the cover being used for other series, and I have no problem with its source of inspiration. The fact remains that this is a lighthearted series for young adults, not a gritty, dark, violent series for hardcore comic fans. The cover just isn't appropriate for that mood, and it's not consistent with the themes of the series. That's it. It's not about triggering women, or protecting women from violence in the media, or anything like that. As I said from the very beginning in plain English, it's just not a good cover for the series by any means. The Killing Joke was marketed towards adults, yes. This isn't that series. 6608

Not to mention that every other cover was nowhere near as dark as this. It just didn't fit, and the author requested it be pulled.Bad taste? What exactly is in "bad taste" about it? Quote this cover is an homage to when the Joker sexually assaulted Barbara Gordon This series is marketed towards young women and has apparently been pretty light-hearted so far. It's basically for teenagers, and suddenly there's this cover. It's not progressive or courageous to publish this, it's just a graphic and disturbing cover that is totally out of place in the series. 6610

Serious / Re: ITER: Star in a bottle nuclear reactor« on: March 17, 2015, 07:14:33 PM »Number one. Where do you put that heat? Where do you direct it and disperse it? Because that amount of heat cannot be contained by any physical apparatus we can build.Says who? We're talking about plasma, here. Think about a candle: the flame is around 1000 degrees celcius, but because of the low density of plasma (it's the phase after gas, the least dense conventional phase of matter), it's painless to pinch out with your fingers. Assuming a catastrophic Fukushima-esque disaster causing a total loss of containment, the heat would dissipate in a matter of seconds. The containment walls might get scorched, but the reaction itself would stop immediately and the heat would dissipate. Quote Number two. The radiation, the ultra violet rays, gamma rays, x rays, all of that shit that will be generated because a star generates all of these, where do you put it?Well they're not literally making a tiny star, they're just causing a fusion reaction using tritium as a fuel source. Tritium is an isotope of hydrogen, as opposed to fission's use of something heavy with a long half-life like uranium. Used fuel will be recyclable within a century, and materials exposed to radiation can be disposed. It's not particularly dangerous, especially compared to coal or oil. 6612

Gaming / Re: Building My Own Gaming PC« on: March 17, 2015, 04:39:38 PM »Edit: My budget for everything, including peripherals, would be around $1,000-$1,200. This is a rough estimate. Games I'd like to play on ultra include but are not limited to: The Division, Metro 2033/Last Light, Far Cry 4, Payday 2, etc. Out of the games listed, I only have Payday 2. I plan on taking advantage of Steam sales in the future, so I will figure that out in time. Suggestions for other games? Recommendations: Graphics card: R290X or higher ~$300 Processor: i4-4550 or higher ~$250 RAM: 8GB ~$90 HDD: 1 Terabyte ~$130 PSU: 750W ~$100 OS: Windows 8.1 ~Depends, check your school for discounts Motherboard: (I prefer MSI A88) ~$75 Peripherals: Keyboard + mouse + monitor: ~$200 Case: <$100 That fits your budget, though it doesn't leave much room for games. Use price comparison tools to find good deals. The Reddit guide is pretty thorough. 6621

Don't forget that you'll need money in your budget to pay for the games you want -- unless you're going to pirate them, but it doesn't sound like you have experience with that.
You need to post your budget, as well as what games you're hoping to be playing on ultra. Expect to pay upwards of $300 for a graphics card able to play current releases on ultra settings. For processors, aim for 3.0+ GHz in a quad core, around $200. Make sure your motherboard is compatible with your processor, though that's typically only an issue when you're upgrading later on. Storage is really your preference. I'd start with an HDD and eventually upgrade to a second drive or even an SSD. Get a reliable case at the start. I'm still using the same case I started with 6 years ago. Power supplies are pretty much universal, expect to pay about $50 and shoot for 700+ Watts. Finally, RAM (or memory) is also pretty straight forward. You need at least 4GB; expect to pay around $50. If you don't have the peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitors) that you want to use for gaming, expect to add another $200 or more, depending on their quality. Use this website as a starting point, or just use whole builds: http://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds 6625
