Serious / Re: Can somebody tell me exactly what's wrong with Ted Cruz?
« on: April 12, 2015, 04:00:52 PM »
I politely disagree and don't think that removing an embryo or fetus in the first few weeks of its life is in any way a moral outrage or murder of a (future) human being.

Moral outrage or not, aborting a fetus at any point after conception is, without debate, ending a human life. Whether that can ethically be considered murder is the issue. Yeah, you are ostensibly denying a human the chance to live. If you need to sanitize the language in order to justify it, I suggest reevaluating your position.

I've had safe sex with my girlfriend dozens of times. It is very likely that if we hadn't used protection, she would be pregnant at this point. Did I deny someone a chance at life then too?

Not sure why this argument is still used. The overwhelming majority of ant-abortionists have no problem with contraception, Plan B, or even very early abortions. There's a significant differences between preventing the formation of an embryo and actually removing an embryo, which is a living, developing, human organism.

I've never been a fan of advancing a relationship with convenience as an excuse.

Neither am I, but it does make sense

I don't know your relationship so I can't agree or disagree, but you didn't list any reason why you want her to move in, you just stated that it's convenient for her. Do you love her? Do you see this being a long relationship? Are you honestly aware of the burdens of cohabitation? Just things to consider. Living with a girl can lose its romantic luster very quickly.

The Flood / I can't stand Daredevil's Fisk actor
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:51:57 PM »

You might remember Vincent D'Onofrio from Full Metal Jacket, but now he's playing New York's biggest crime boss Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin, in the new Daredevil series. I can barely get through this guy's scenes, he's doing such a terrible job at his role. Yeah he's tall and fat and has nice suits, but that's the extent of his characterization. Amazingly, the actor that plays Fisk as a kid does a better job than D'Onofrio. Between growling out every line through gritted teeth and overacting his cliche 'rich guy just wants to save the poor neighborhoods' role, I can't wait for this guy to get killed off. Unfortunately, I really doubt they'll get the Kingpin out of the way any time soon, so we're stuck with him.

I've seen other people saying they really like him in the role, but I just can't enjoy it. Thoughts?

Is it worth playing through Witcher 2 before this? The game's a bit dated, and from what I've heard it's relatively long.

Halo 5 is one of those games that I'll be buying regardless of pretty much any potential feature missing from the game.

The Flood / Re: Jar Jar Binks is a great character

And by that logic, C-3P0 is a bad character to due to being annoying to people and not actually progressing the plot at all. C-3P0 is a character that doesn't need to exist either.

C3PO is one of the most hatest characters in the series. I'd say he's second to Jar Jar in terms of how much shit he gets. He's somewhat necessary to interpret R2 and provide the audience a relatable character. He explains necessary information without sounding contrived. He's the one asking why things are broken on the Falcon when everyone else doesn't need it explained, he tells us what is going on in the first scene of IV, and voices the unspoken complaints of the audience about how stupid certain things seem, telling us that we're right to think that but we don't know everything that's happening yet.

Jar Jar does very little of this. The only things he informs the audience of is the existence of the Gungan city, which is itself a MacGuffin to get the Jedi to the second act.

Except he doesn't do any of this. If your defense of a character is, "you would like him if you were 9", you've got a shitty defense.

I'm not 9 and don't have an issue with the character, so that obviously isn't true.

The article you quoted is just wrong. His slapstick humor slows down the pace of the first act, and he doesn't provide any useful narrative or lessons. He provides filler in the form of Gungans to get the characters to the next point of the plot. He "saves the day" in the most contrived way for a conflict we don't even care about which has zero impact on anything in the series, and even that isn't true: Jar Jar's actions accomplish nothing, he ends up surrendering the entire Gungan army, and the battle is ultimately won by Anakin.

No, he didn't work for his specific purpose. He had no specific purpose. Except for getting the Jedi to Otoh Gunga, he could literally be removed from the film with no consequences. He was the necessary slapstick character and advanced the plot because of lazy writing, but that doesn't excuse the fact the he was annoying and irrelevant.

Theatrical version.

Limited version.

Do you understand the difference between those two concepts?

What is reading?

I don't even know why you're arguing. That's obviously not what I've been talking about or the rumor I was addressing.

I actually own these. All they did was take the VHS content and write it into a DVD. On any modern high definition TV it's unwatchable. It's exactly the same as hooking a VHS player up and watching that. It's stretched and zoomed in so much that the picture is totally fucked up, the audio sucks, and it's not at all what I've been talking about. High definition, high fidelity audio, theatrical cut. No extra explosions, Greedo never gets off a shot, no early Jaba dialog, no extra CGI assets in the Tatooine scenes, etc.

I have these dvds and they play fine on my new 50 inch TV. I just watched A New Hope last week. Either that guy has a shit DVD player, or doesn't know how to setup his TV correctly.

I honestly have no idea why you're continuing this. I stated a question about a particular rumor, specifically disregarding the 2006 release, and you linked me to the same thing I had just ruled out. And now you're lying about this playing correctly, because there is absolutely no way you're playing a standard format on a 50" tv without display issues. Either it's stretched to fit, fucking up the already low resolution, or it's playing with huge ass black bars on each side of the picture. And please tell me how you magically converted the audio to 5.1 channels. You're telling me I don't know how to set up a TV when you're claiming your HD TV plays standard format just fine. Jesus christ.

Weren't they going to release the theatrical versions on DVD? Who would want to watch the most recent updates?

Theatrical versions have been on DVD since 2006.

Okay, go find me a place to buy it. You can't find it anywhere, and I'm referring to a Blu Ray release of the theatrical version, not added onto a special edition as extra content. I own the first edition VHS tapes, but a high definition version that modern TVs can actually play would be awesome.
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-IV-Hope-Limited/dp/B000FQJAIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428724292&sr=8-1&keywords=star+wars+theatrical+dvd

And that's just Amazon. There's a thing called Google, I think you'd like it.

If you're of the disposition that would lead to you even asking this (i.e., you don't have a large group of friends to go with or a girl to ask), then no, you won't. I went to two and the real memories are of the after-party.

There's a modding community, but Frostbite is a bitch to mod, so you're not going to find anything that actually affects the gameplay. Mostly aesthetic stuff and RNG tweaks. Check Nexus Mods.

Ironically, all cutscenes are in-game, and you can see the strain it takes to have a lot of assets on the screen at once.
