the only thing i don't understand is what exactly a wage subsidy entails
and precisely why it is better

The government would pay companies to give higher wages. It's basically a negative income tax but is logistically accomplished at the payroll level, not the individual employee. It is better because it doesn't artificially raise the value of jobs, and the biggest issue with minimum wage is how few people it helps to those it harms. A minimum wage increase typically doesn't entail a raise for those earning hourly wages above the minimum.

Say you work an hourly job at $11/hr. If the minimum wage is raised from $8/hr to $10/hr, your job has just lost $2/hr in value. Now, some jobs will adjust their wages to give everyone above a bit of a raise, but that's becoming increasingly less common. A minimum wage increase disproportionately harms the people making more per hour.

A wage subsidy affects everyone under a certain income level, progressively.

Gotta wait 2 weeks to buy him.
You have to pay for characters in Smash 4?
There are DLC characters. You can get Mewtwo for 'free' if you purchased the game on both WiiU and 3DS and registered the codes, otherwise you have to buy him.

Lucas is also going to be a DLC character, released in June.
Only two characters so far.

That's not too bad, I guess. Kinda lame to make a classic character paid DLC, but it doesn't seem like the prices for the upcoming characters are very high.

Not washing my car won't do much, considering an overwhelming majority of water use is agricultural.

Isn't only like 10% of it from private citizen use?

A dollar an hour is fair.
On average it's actually above $3/hr, but yeah, in China that's a fair wage for unskilled labor.

Except the working conditions are terrible and they can't complain because there's a million other people that can take his position.

It's not universally terrible, and I'm not sure why you're claiming they can't complain, since labor unions and strikes are a big deal there.

On the actual topic's interest in Chinese labor, I agree that Foxconn is a very inhumane company and Jobs/Apple deserve all the shit they got for using them.

You're joking if you think we know about even half the slave labor in China alone.

It's from the Global Slavery Index. We actually do have a pretty good idea of the extent of slave labor worldwide. It's officially banned in China, but the majority is the 'near-slave labor' I mentioned which is the typical example of lines of workstations with kids through teens working for 12+ hours per day. From our perspective a lot of that is terrible; we would never pay someone a dollar per hour to work half the day; in China, though, poor kids tend to want to do work, whatever they can get, to support their family, and American/Western companies tend to have better working conditions and higher pay than others.
And yet it's practically slave labor.

Okay, it's practically slave labor, except the workers get paid relatively fair wages and aren't owned by their employer and have the ability to form unions.

I tend to dislike anime, especially when the English dub sucks and the fans insist you watch it subbed. Nope.

I've only found a few I like:

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
-Great story, pacing, and action
-Excellent English voice actors
-Very few of the stereotypical anime tropes, if any

Baccano!
-Best voice acting in any anime I've seen
-Hilarious, well-written dialog
-Very complex story
-Fun, diverse characters
YouTube

Death Note
-Kinda meh, but a cool concept
-Stop after the first season

East of Eden
-Another cool concept that helps you get past how terrible anime is

I also watched a ton of Naruto. It's bad. Don't even start it.

In reality, U.S. companies exporting labor gives millions of impoverished families a source of income and stability.
If you call slave labor "stability", sure.

There's quite a bit of what is essentially slave labor, and it's detestable. Obviously I'm not referring to companies that use such practices.
But the majority of it is slave labor. And for the ones who are payed, it's no better than indentured servitude.

China has about 1 billion workers, with approximately .3% of those being bonafide slave labor, and another 1% being the near-slave labor that you hear about from companies like Foxconn, who make Apple products. Mostly migrant workers fall into the former and latter. That's terrible, but it doesn't negate the fact that there are legitimately beneficial companies hiring labor in China. America itself has tens of thousands of actual slaves in it, but you wouldn't say the majority of poor people are slaves.

Serious / Re: When does an analogy become too extreme?
« on: April 15, 2015, 09:55:00 PM »
You did state earlier, however, that analogies can be extreme enough to hinder one's argument. Could you give an example of that? Because if you don't consider my above example to be extreme (which is wonderful), I wonder where your standards lie.

Analogies should appropriately represent what you're trying to convey. If it's too extreme (or too weak, even), then it can fail to be an effective argument or imply you don't have a good understanding of what you're talking about.

I could say, "rape is like slavery because it dehumanizes the victim and removes their control over their body", and while some may find that distasteful, they'd still get the idea. If I said, "increasing taxes on the rich by 1% is like kicking down their door and robbing them at gunpoint", it might parallel the idea a bit but it's so exaggerated that it loses credibility and effectiveness as an argument.

Serious / Re: When does an analogy become too extreme?
« on: April 15, 2015, 09:20:49 PM »
I think in that example, rape is a perfect analogy. It's all the domain of bodily autonomy and consent, so there's really no reason to say it's too extreme. And assuming your position is actually right, I'd say birth is a violation orders of magnitude worse than rape.

It can definitely be so extreme that it hinders your argument. I'm not really sure what you're getting at though; is someone saying that analogies can be so extreme that they're offensive? It'd be helpful if you could provide the analogy or conversation that sparked this discussion.

There's no - button on the microwave though!!!

Just mail the baby to me and I'll do it. My microwave has one.

I don't have time! They're coming to the door right now!

What if you put the baby back in and change the clock back to before you originally microwaved him? I think that should work.

I had to do a thesis for my degree, and without getting into the details, I thought I didn't have to do it all until I found out otherwise a week before the end of the semester and I ended up writing an entire 40 page thesis project the night before it was due, then I wrote the hour-long presentation for it the morning I was presenting it.

Thesis got accepted, I got an A, and I graduated.
