The Flood / Re: NASA may have accidentally created a Warp Field...
« on: April 24, 2015, 01:00:38 PM »
Pseudoscience is fun.

Sorry to put a damper on the article, but this is bullshit. Details:

-First of all, saying something was posted on NASAspaceflight.com means nothing. It was a forum post. I could post a topic about how much I like the smell of my shit and it wouldn't have any endorsement from NASA.
-The EmDrive and Cannae Drive have basically been debunked. At the most, nobody really knows what results from the Chinese experiments even mean, if they're even significant in any way.
-This article is basically saying "this scientist thought of a way to make a warp field (basically an exact copy of a generic sci-fi warp field), but it's not possible because of power requirements". In reality, nobody has any sort of meaningful concept of this device. Saying it looks like "a football in a donut" is fucking retarded.
-Any results of light traveling faster than the speed of light need to be taken with a grain of salt because that law only applies in a vacuum, which is not the environment of the EmDrive experiments.

Notice that they renamed the EU to Star Wars "Legends". I'm hoping they capitalize on this and bring back fan-favorite characters, particularly Kyle Katarn for the Rogue One as the original thief of the first Death Star plans, though they've said it doesn't revolve around Jedi and Kyle Katarn was never part of Rogue Squadron.

There should at least be a "try before you buy" option, because they're mods, they might not always work, and it's the internet, there are greedy shitbags out there.

*sips tea*
There's a 24 hour trial period, and refunds are through the Steam wallet.

Well this is definitely not the first time germline manipulation has been done successfully, and for reasons of eliminating illness I see no problem with it. Someday I hope to see genetic engineering to remove serious defects and illnesses viewed as favorably as vaccinations are.

Video game costs are historically low compared to inflation-adjusted prices in the past, yes we demand exponentially more from them in a shorter schedule. Of course DLC is going to be a reality for all major triple-A games. Adjusted for inflation, BF2 cost more than the new one will cost. Hell, Ocarina of Time cost $60-70 back in the 90's, and that's without adjusting for inflation.

I haven't read the newest novels but I don't recall humans discovering technologically advanced species along the way. I have no idea what was up with that.

Gotta upgrade that keyboard, broski.
Apple keyboard is best chiclet keyboard.

Well you called your setup a gaming rig, and yet the primary input device is way below par.

A perfectly valid line of questioning, but not in an interview to promote a movie and discuss the growth of Iron Man as a character. I guess he was trying to draw parallels of RDJ to his character, but RDJ made it pretty clear that Iron Man is a character and not an extension of his own personality.

How is this not a legal nightmare? <.<

I mean mods on nexus get DMCA'd by butthurt users and they aren't for profit at all. Unless all the copyright holders suddenly lost interest in gangraping modders for funsies, this is going to be a right bloodbath.

The developers have to agree to it, I think. No chance of copyright issues.
people are actually defending this

It's not about Valve. Nexus or ModDB could do the same thing and I'd still think it's a good idea to let creators charge for their work if they choose.

Compatibility issues are always either in the readme or description of any mod that's decent. It's your fault if something doesn't work because you didn't read the readme or description. If said mod doesn't have either then its your fault for not using common sense and not downloading it.

At this point you're arguing just to be confrontational. This entire paragraph is bullshit and you know it. I'm not talking about fault or blame; it's not a big deal for a mod to be broken or incompatible with other mods. Shit happens. All I said is that I appreciate the ability to refund the mod if it doesn't work the way you expect.

It's in the earning money section.
Of the Skyrim page, not the general announcement FAQ. That's what I'm talking about.

There's also the fact that those mods are free. When you're selling a product you should make sure it's at least working properly before putting it on the market.

Nexus releases fuckloads of broken mods. I really dig the 24 hour trial period for the mods, especially given the track record for mod creators to release broken or incompatible mods and just ignore it from there.

And there are more convenient ways to do that; spells or just placing it directly into the inventory.

A spell to spawn armor? More clutter for the user interface. Added directly to the inventory? Have fun adding more than a few at once and having to manage that and go store it somewhere next time you log in. I've seen better ways to add gear to the game, but bitching about using the console (a great tool for PC gamers) is incredibly nitpicky.

People whining about a specific market of paid mods are the embodiment of entitlement.

The trailer tries to explore the ethics of merging humanity and technology, but I have no doubt the game will be 5 hours of using kickass cybernetic implants and upgrades to murder the shit out of evil brown people/Russians.

You have to use the fucking console to spawn his item into the game.
So?
That's like having to insert a PIN code to access the new DLC skins you just downloaded.

It's not like that at all. It's the creator giving players a specific way to spawn the item. So what if it doesn't appear in a specific spot in the game? Shitloads of mods just add equipment to the game files without any hint of where or how to get them.

What I interpreted as Valve/developers not being middlemen:
Quote
Unlike other curated games on Steam that allow users to sell their creations, this will be the first game with an open market. It will not be curated by us or Valve.

Valve clearly states that modders only get 25% on their information page.
I don't think it was clear. it's not even on the content creator FAQ. I searched the site for this information before searching for third party articles about it because I couldn't find it on Steam.

Quote
you've never seen a professional mod if you think having to spawn it into the game via console is anywhere near professional.
Okay. I tend to judge professionalism in modding with respect to quality and interaction with other mods, but I guess the method of spawning the item is what I should've been looking for.

We talk about foreign policy all the time. Threads with giant walls of text and no interesting discussion prompt tend to get ignored, though.

Weird, several press releases I read stated that neither Valve nor the developer will act as a middleman to the payments and that content creators get the fees.

they're only getting 25% and that money is apparently being given to them in Steam dollars. Basically Valve is making 100% of the profit since they never actually have to pay anyone for their work.

Literally none of this is true. 100% of profit goes to the content creators via direct deposit to their bank account.

I actually really like the idea. Modding can often require a lot of effort and it's cool to see developers recognizing this by allowing content creators to be rewarded for their time. Those Skyrim mods they're advertising look professional.

I have zero problems with the concept of a for-profit university. They provide valuable services to people that are willing to pay, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just because your tuition isn't cut with taxpayer dollars doesn't make a degree worth any less.
A lot of for-profit colleges are merely scam schools. They prey on people who are low-income by inflating their prices pushing the idea of student loans on them because that's the only way they'd be able to afford the school. Often times, these "schools" are not accredited and employers will not recognize them as legitimate schools, and therefore a worthless diploma and a mountain of debt.

Like I said, I have zero problems with the concept of for-profit universities. I don't condone predatory institutions, though. A lot of the stigma is misplaced, though. DeVry and UoP are accredited, and are a good choice for a lot of people.
