The Flood / Anyone own a Pebble smartwatch?
« on: June 23, 2015, 10:30:18 AM »
I'm looking for a watch to fly with. I like the different apps Pebbles can run, and I was wondering if, in your experience, it'd be possible to easily set multiple alarms and display multiple timezones (I'm talking about just being able to scroll around quickly to see these, not going through various menus). I currently have a Seiko dive watch which is pretty useful but I'd like something a bit cheaper in case of damage, with a digital display to make it easier to read.

Eurogamer: I'm not going to mention them again. I can't get them.

Luke Smith: But you can if you buy the Collector's Edition.

Eurogamer: I'm not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again.

Luke Smith: Okay, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit.

Eurogamer: Poke at me?

Luke Smith: You're feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don't know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -

Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them -

Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.

Eurogamer: What I'm saying is that fan frustration is not because they don't understand the proposition. It comes regardless of how cool the exclusive content is. The frustration - and mine as a fan - is that the method of acquiring it requires me to re-buy content I bought a year ago.

Luke Smith: [Long pause] It's about value. The player's assessment of the value of the content.

So this is pretty solid proof that Bungie is entirely disconnected from their fanbase. For fans that have played from the start, and want all current content, they're expected to have paid a total of $180 + tax ($60 base, $20x2 DLC, $80 collector's edition expansion). And if you're British, convert that shit to pounds while you cry into your tea and biscuits.

The Flood / Re: favourite episode of ted talks?

I gotta catch up on Ted Talks. The only thing that bothers me is that it doesn't seem like it goes through any sort of peer review before it's filmed; I remember seeing one where a guy went on a very convincing discussion of how China is more transparent, free, and ethical than the U.S.

idiocy of the "philosophy" known as moral nihilism. I have to use "philosophy" in quotation marks, too, because the word itself (derived, of course, from the Greek philosophia) is supposed to mean "love of wisdom", but any individuals who describe themselves as nihilists could never love wisdom.

The idea that "sexual energy" or testosterone is reduced with sexual activity has long been debunked, and the general conclusion is that consistent sexual activity actually results in a boost in physical endurance in relation to sports and exercise.

Masturbation's largest side effect is relaxation, so it could be that you rely on a state of increased stress to motivate you to get stuff done and the relaxation you feel is hindering that.

The Flood / Re: Let's talk about Jon Snow
« on: June 21, 2015, 04:28:32 PM »
What is warging and how does one warg?

He can take control of animals. For the wargs in the book, when they die they kind of float around and take over whatever animals they have a strong connection to nearby. So presumably when Jon died and said "Ghost", he took over Ghost and is living in that body. But the power is linked to their body; they can die as an animal but if their human body dies, they're stuck.

Any competent CEO will have a similar drive to develop new technology and increase efficiency. Another example is Amazon; they're not making dividends now, but they're reinvesting all their money into R&D so they can be the top competitor.

Elon Musk seems like a great leader, and I like his focus on efficient electrics.

I would say developing a true artificial intelligence would be the single most important discovery in human history; all others would be meaningless by comparison except in their contribution to AI. It would mean we understand how our minds work and what actually leads to sapience. Beyond a mere function of processing we'd be able to make the existential into the scientific. Questions of existence and origin would leave the realm of pseudoscience and become experimental.

Artificial intelligence isn't sought by making the most efficient computer, it's by unraveling the mystery of consciousness and reason. A true AI would mean we've finally prioritized knowledge over utility, and that would be a turning point of our species.

A.I. technology has been developed a lot throughout the years, and we're at a point where they can think on their own (although extremely limited).

Is this a hypothetical situation? Because we are not even close to actual artificial intelligence.

The Flood / Let's talk about Jon Snow
« on: June 21, 2015, 01:33:54 PM »
So I'm actually starting to think he's legitimately dead, at least his human body. He's a skinchanger so he definitely became Ghost when he died, but it's known that skinchangers lose the ability to warg when their body dies; they live out their life as the animal, with just a faint memory of their past life.

Let's look at how GRRM resurrects main characters: Catelyn Stark becomes Lady Stoneheart, playing a relatively small role, enacting revenge for her family's murder; The Hound finds peace tending to the dead at Quiet Isle monastery; The Mountain becomes a Frankenstein's monster-type soldier.

Each time a character is brought back, it's because they were important enough to deserve a bit more than just death and in doing so, their character arc is better resolved. Of course Melisandre could revive him, though I think we're starting to see that her power and interpretation of events is often a sham. And what purpose does Jon serve? Is he going to rally the Night's Watch and stop the invasion? Nope, the Wall will fall, and the White Walkers are gonna fuck shit up. They have to; that's the overarching conflict of the series, and is ultimately going to bring the characters together and decide which faction ends up on top.

I have no doubt that the GoT producers could successfully cover up Jon's resurrection, but I just don't think it's going to happen in any plot-defining manner.

Marble Hornets.

Even though I think I'm the only person on the Internet who enjoyed how it ended.
What's the ending? I followed it from the start but it was so long between episodes I lost interest.
Not quite sure where you ended up stopping, but all right.
Spoiler
In the penultimate entry, Tim finally confronts Alex at Benedict Hall. During their fight, it's confirmed by Alex that the entire cast of Marble Hornets is indeed dead, including Amy and Brian, because he believes that killing everyone involved with the film is the only way to stop the Operator from spreading his disease to other people. This is learned only after Tim mortally wounds him. At the end of the entry, it's left ambiguous as to whether Tim made it out alive, but at the beginning of the final entry (#87), he's shown to have survived, along with Jessica, who appears briefly alongside Tim as they briefly update each other on their physical statuses and mental well-being. At this point, Jay has been long dead (I can't remember precisely how, when, or why), but Tim lies about him being alive to Jessica before they depart. The final shot is of Tim driving off, and it stops as soon as Tim reaches a fork in the road.

Virtually no questions regarding the Operator were answered. A lot of people think they pulled a Lost, but frankly, I don't really want to know anything about the Operator. Part of what makes him a fearsome entity is indeed the fact that he is so mysterious, and having an explanation for all his motives and whereabouts would not only spoil that, it also wouldn't make a lick of sense. How exactly would you be able to explain something like the Operator anyway? There is nothing they could have written that would have satisfied anybody, and that's precisely why I'm satisfied with such an ambiguous ending.

Oh, damn. I stopped around episode 40, because it had dragged on for years and weeks between tiny snippets of story made it hard to follow.

Tris are my jam. Sprint or olympic?
sprint, i'm not dedicated enough to put in the training required for an Olympic

No worries, I think you should give it a try sometime though. Congrats on #7 though; that's more than most would ever do by far.
i've thought about it but i only do these races when my dad wants to, doing the tri with him tomorrow is his Father's Day present. he's never seemed interested in the Olympic distance so sprints are my forte

Oh, that's such a cool gift. I got to finish my ironman with my mom, and that is one of the best memories I've got of her. Are you going to try to meet up and finish together?

It looks pretty, but it looks indistinguishable from what we saw six years ago. Actually, the newest trailer shows far less than the first one. It was a disappointing reveal for what's probably a very creative and fun game.

Most shows either long outlive their time and just sort of fizzle out, or try to force an abrupt and disappointing end. Post some series you've seen that ended perfectly. I'll start:

The Office
YouTube

Scrubs
YouTube

I've heard Mad Men's ending was great, but I haven't finished it because half of the last season isn't on Netflix yet.

Aero
Thermo

Because they make cool sciency words.

But I really like prefixes like 'a-', 'de-', and 're-' because of how universal they are; you could put one in front of almost any verb and while not necessarily proper English, it would still convey the meaning of what you're saying succinctly.

-V.A.T.S. has received some slight overhauls. It no longer completely pauses the action, and critical shots are no longer random. If you look at the videos, you'll notice a "critical" bar on the bottom of the screen that the player fills. Once it is fully filled you can decide when to use it. Your luck skill determines how fast the bar increases, and there are perks that dig into how criticals work and how you use them.
Interesting. I wonder how this will apply to sneak kills... no more OHK Crit-kills from high powered weapons?
That's a good point. Maybe a high enough sneak vs the enemy's level will guarantee a critical hit?
