The Flood / Re: You just won $1 million.
« on: July 12, 2015, 04:08:42 PM »
I'd immediately invest all of it into the stock market. With a historical rate of return of 10.4%, and I assume that after taxes I only had about $400,000 left, if I retire at 60 I'd take out about $20 million. On top of pension and social security (pretending I'll actually get my payout), life would be a breeze.

I say the same thing

Except you didn't, and it wasn't Meta's post that persuaded me. I read the article's abstract which discussed its economic implications more than the summary in the OP.
Let me write down what I think I know what you know.

It affects the economy because these individuals will affect society (make it up some day), and economy is mostly society and vice versa. These people being more stupid will make society more stupid, and thus prone to bad economy.

Correct?

No, it demonstrates trends in human capital that can be corrected for earlier and in a more cost-effective manner than waiting until students are in school. Though the differences in test scores seem statistically insignificant, and I would've liked to see the data (though the article is behind a paywall).

Sanders seems like a great guy and a true progressive, and I support almost all of his social issues, but a voting record doesn't qualify him to be president.

How is #5 related to economics?
It's not as obvious as the others, but it's clear enough that prenatal development and educational attainment affect quality of life.

Was a judgement call, more than anything else.

I see it now. It'd be interesting to see what some other cultures practice that may interfere with long-term aptitude, and by extension, income.

Okay, then don't try answering a question directed at him them, especially when that answer is going to be deliberately stupid.

Ha, no I mean what's your reasoning for saying they're stupid? I totally get that you think drinking is wrong (though I think you ought to try it in a controlled environment so you can at least judge it from experience), but moderate drunkenness makes sex really great. Obviously it goes without saying that that's assuming the couple are consenting adults.
what specifically about alcohol makes sex better

Guys usually last longer, and women are usually more expressive and honest about what they want. It just feels better, too.

Society

If you make it that broad, then everything falls under economics.

Either way though chemo is way too expensive and had he wanted the treatment originally he would've needed to cook either way.

There's really no alternatives unless you're rich or you're upper middle class.

Yeah, and it also speaks about the state of teacher benefits. A moderately decent insurance plan should have helped him, but as a teacher he really didn't have access to that. The show has a really good social commentary wrapped up in well-written characters and a great drama.

5264
But that's my point, we only really get involved when there's resources and money in the equation. We didn't primarily do it to stop evil.

That's not bad exactly, but let's be honest. We shouldn't act like the motives were moral first and monetary second.

Well it's not like people were getting rich off of this. I think there's quite a bit of morality involved in stopping a dictator, who has demonstrated willingness to massacre people for very little reason, from holding a significant portion of the world's oil supply hostage. If oil trade were to be disrupted, it would have far more impact on the world than some 1%ers losing a bit of cash.

5265
Turns out the Gulf War was clearly justified and had significant positive ramifications for the country, and to call Saddam a "two-bit dictator" exposed how worryingly out of touch Sanders was and is.
LOL

never taking an opinion of yours seriously again

Pretty sure you've said that numerous times before. Saddam wasn't a two-bit dictator; he massacred ethnic groups and was invading Kuwait to gain control of one of the most strategically important ports in the area, ostensibly to use oil resources to leverage the world into allowing his rampage. Desert Storm is arguably one of the most clearly justified, good vs. evil-type war since WWII.
For the soldiers.

For the higher ups this was nothing but resource control. They couldn't care less about the people he was massacring, because if they did they'd send troops to several other places where genocide is occurring.

As bad as it sounds, resource control is a legitimate reason for a coalition's intervention. Saddam posed a serious threat to budding global trade and world stability by attempting to take Kuwait. Other nations experiencing genocides is terrible, and it doesn't go unnoticed in the realm of global politicking, but the U.S. can't and shouldn't be used as a global police force for every civil atrocity that occurs.

5266
Yeah, I don't know what they'll be calling it, but I imagine it should be The Wolverine 2.

The Flood / Old Man Logan confirmed for Wolverine 3 (+comic links)

Quote
He confirmed to the audience that the Untitled “Wolverine 3” would be his last offing as the character Logan (as he’s said umpteenth times), but director Bryan Singer let it slip that Jackman would likely have a cameo in ‘Apocalypse’ (as you pretty much expected. As for that third Wolverine. “Three words,” Jackman said, “Old Man Logan,” essentially teasing and confirming rumors that said “Wolverine 3” will feature a storyline that features an older Logan (while a mutant who has super healing powers, Logan does age, just very slowly).

For those unversed:

Part 1: http://imgur.com/gallery/6RCyD
Part 2: http://imgur.com/gallery/TM1GY
Part 3: http://imgur.com/gallery/2ytnY
Part 4: http://imgur.com/gallery/p4IIS
Part 5: http://imgur.com/gallery/92XFX
Part 6: http://imgur.com/gallery/fDEBN
Part 7: http://imgur.com/gallery/4tbXH
Part 8: http://imgur.com/gallery/9pboQ

I kind of doubt they'll go with the post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-style story since it would contradict their future movies (specifically, X-Men: Apocalypse), but a more gritty, world-weary Wolverine would be a great cinematic character.

Bro chemotherapy treatment is much cheaper in Europe than in America.

The reason he started was because he literally couldn't afford treatment. And while he was at it he decided to leave money for his bitch wife and son.

Nah man, at first it's all about providing for his jobless wife, disabled son, and unborn daughter. Episode 4, when Skyler learns about his cancer, is when he decides he has to start doing chemo to keep the ruse up. Prior to that he was totally okay with dying.

Serious / Re: African Americans in sports and slave breeding.
« on: July 11, 2015, 10:55:27 PM »
The breeding wasn't for physical attributes, but to get free slaves. I don't think there's much merit to your theory. Superiority in sports is pretty much entirely due to height differences and related body attributes.
It was for both, mostly physical attributes. A slave owner that wants to make some decent profit will breed slaves to maximize their performance. Which they did.

There's no evidence of this. It's all supposition. There's barely even evidence of any widespread breeding let alone trying to isolate certain traits, which would take many generations and couldn't have possibly resulted in any radical changes like you're claiming.
Nah man it's been documented. And it seems plausible that some changes could have been seen over the few centuries.

If it's been well-documented, then site some sources. And just a reminder that black slavery only existed for 90 years in America, not a few centuries (America hasn't even existed that long).
Middle passage started in the 1500's. Slavery predates the establishment of America. Also I provided a link.

Your link has a couple written quotations. It has absolutely no credible, peer-reviewed research to back up the claim. Obviously slavery predates America, but indentured servitude affected all races, not just blacks. The point is that no, slavery didn't produce really great basketball players, and there's no evidence of any widespread effort to breed strong slaves.

Breaking Bad would have been avoided if America had socialized medicine. The plot set up would not have worked in any civilized (see European) nation.

Unless socialized healthcare comes with free cancer-approved life insurance, that's completely incorrect since Walter starts cooking meth to ensure his family has money after his death. All the insurance money in the world can't pay a mortgage after he dies from late-stage, inoperable lung cancer.
