Serious / Re: What's your opinion on nuclear weapons?« on: July 29, 2015, 01:02:35 PM »
It's really just a question of scale at this point. Airbursts dissipate radiation relatively quickly, so we're not worried about irradiating the planet for centuries, e.g. Fallout. If modern nukes are too big, how about city-busters like Fat Man? Too big still, well then what about blockbusters? Armor-piercing or bunker busters? Should bombs only blow up a single building? Part of a building? Should they just shake the building a little bit and do no harm? Should we only use bullets? Well then how big is too big for artillery or ship guns? Etc.
The possession of nukes by a civilized coalition is a strong deterrent against forces that oppose said coalition. It's pretty much impossible that we'll ever see nations so vehemently radicalized that their citizenry itself is hostile, as we saw from Japan, but who knows? 5014
Serious / Re: A challenge to free will« on: July 29, 2015, 12:55:21 PM »It's not from the video, it's just the title of the movie. The kid chose to free the whale despite the consequences by reasoning through the morality of his actions. And stuff like that.I just realized this was a pun: OT: The answer is in the question; the one without free will is the one that has been programmed to nearly-perfectly simulate the reactions of someone with free will. The difference is that the one with free will has greater moral accountability for his or her actions, whereas the accountability of the non-free-agent lies partially in that person and partially in whoever designed that program. There's no 'free will' center of the brain, so if we're talking about a person who for some reason is intellectually handicapped, or maybe ethically and intellectually immature (like a child), then their responsibility for their actions is unquantifiably lessened. Free will isn't contingent upon one's ability to distinguish it. Kind of like the question of uncertainty versus randomness, the latter necessitates an ability to quantify something but often the lack of robust techniques to do so. So the inability to identify an empirical basis for free will doesn't really invalidate someone's culpability for their actions. And of course there's quite a degree of determinism in life, and we're all not perfectly free but rather bound to a relatively strict set of decisions that we make subconsciously as a result of the sum of our experiences, genes, and environmental stimuli. Is 'free will' largely an unempirical, unquantifiable subject that is often meaningless in context? Absolutely. 5015

Serious / Re: Is Modern Society Absolutely Neccessary for Well Being or Happiness?« on: July 26, 2015, 01:53:57 PM »
By whose standard are we modern? People in 400 years may look at videos of our current lifestyle and ask, "is a modern lifestyle necessary for happiness? Look at these 21st century people, with their slow internet, manually-driven cars, dull and endless jobs, unhealthy food, and general shittiness. And yet they're enjoy it."
So no, clearly one can achieve happiness, self-actualization, and a full life in conditions less modern than what we currently live in. 5031

The effect of violent media on people (particularly adolescents) is well-established. I wrote a research paper on it several years ago in school. I'm not saying it turns people into killers. There exists a quite vocal group of gamers that deny any sort of increase in aggression or arousal from playing games (or watching violent movies, or listening to violent music, etc.), which has been thoroughly refuted. It's not exclusive, though. Sports tend to have a similar effect. 5034
Gaming / Re: How do you set your camera controls?...« on: July 26, 2015, 12:40:21 PM »
I invert the Y axis because I grew up playing FPS games like Star Wars: Rebel Assault and Doom with a joystick, and it's also because I'm used to flight controls. Pressing forward to look down just makes sense to me. It doesn't make uninverted wrong.

People who are mentally sound can differentiate between the two and know it's not okay to do it IRL.Violence in video games (and all forms of media) can and does have a psychological impact on the player, and is desensitizing us to other forms of violence, be it simulated or otherwise.I honestly don't think very many people deny this. Of course not. But kids and teens are still susceptible to stimuli because their brains are still developing, responding to stressors and figuring out what makes them go away. Conditioning your mind to relax through gratuitous violent content, regardless of the medium, is not particularly healthy. 5036

I've always stated that I don't play games for escapism--I play them because there is a legitimate experience to be had. I really don't think escapism necessarily entails a useless experience. You can enjoy a game while simultaneously recognizing that it may have glaring flaws in crucial areas.
My enjoyment of a game is not contingent upon what an esteemed peer or critic may have to say about it. Playing video games is almost always substantially less productive than some other forms of media entertainment, like reading a book. Violence in video games (and all forms of media) can and does have a psychological impact on the player, and is desensitizing us to other forms of violence, be it simulated or otherwise. 5040
