She's incredibly corrupt and will say and do whatever it takes to get elected office. She has no platform. Her platform is whatever popular opinion is on hot subjects to garner attention and votes. She has no real state leadership experience and what 'leadership' she's had as Secretary of State was tainted with multiple scandals and solid evidence that she violated information security and is just a bumbling idiot in the matters of foreign affairs. You don't elect a president over social issues like gay marriage -- presidents don't do jack shit about that. They interact with other countries and determine the course of action for our country. She is not qualified to be that person.

I've noticed when I speed read, I still subvocalize but I only do it for key words. So when I quickly read that sentence, I hear 'noticed', 'speed', and 'subvocalized'.

I'm not convinced it holds back reading comprehension. Speed readers just happen to subvocalize quite a bit faster.

I pretty much exclusively drink water or drinks that are mostly water.

Whiskey is 65% water. It's basically a person.

Live from Casa del Turkey:

Killed the Jim Beam last week. Moved on to Rebel Yell bourbon. Never tried it, and reviews say it sucks, so it's perfect for mixing.

Cheap bourbon and great bitters a good Old Fashioned makes. Post your poison, Sep7, because it's that time again.

How tolerant is Arizona in regards to gay rights btw?

Gay marriage is legal, and Phoenix is a pretty progressive city.

The Flood / Re: holy fuck Victarion confirmed??
« on: August 01, 2015, 05:51:55 PM »
Victarion's important enough to get an actor like Ian McShane, but they haven't even hinted at the Greyjoy plot yet. By now they're supposed to have arrived at Meereen, ready to fuck shit up and claim a dragon. With so many important characters relocating to Essos, I can see them spending a lot of time on those plot threads, building up for some sort of invasion in seasons 7 and the final battles in 8.

he's probably gonna be Randyll Tarly. He fits their casting call almost to a T. I imagine theyre messing with Sam's storyline and having him meet gilly and her son at Horn Hill before he gets to Oldtown. Maybe right as Randyll leaves for KL.

Randyll Tarly is almost entirely unimportant, especially now that his interactions with Brienne are cut.

plants have systems similar to animals in order to stay alive.

They really don't, though. They share a common chemical with animals and use it in a similar capacity, which is not at all uncommon. Saying they have similar systems is like claiming a unicycle is similar to a Lamborghini because they roll on wheels.

Serious / My sister finally told me she's gay
« on: July 31, 2015, 09:27:35 PM »
So a while ago when my mom revealed to me that my sister is gay, I posted a thread on here asking if I should tell her I knew or just wait. Well the consensus was to let her come to the decision in her own time, and she finally gave me a call and told me. She seemed really relieved, and it really struck me how it's just fucking stupid that anyone would have to worry about that kind of thing. So if there's someone you know that's struggling with coming out, just be there for them and love them, because it really should be trivial.

Anyway, I'm not sure what sort of discussion to prompt. Just wanted to share this story.

(Obviously the answer is 'yes' to both questions.)

Those metrics seem kind of arbitrary.. Are there ethics books missing from the library? Did they vote? Do they recognize eating red meat as moderately unethical while still eating it?

That's not really testing their commitment to a philosophy at all.

And here's the disgusting part, to me--some people criticize my philosophies not on their merits, but how they make them feel. Emotionally.

That's how I suspect most people react to anti-natalism when they first hear about it.
"But we can't go extinct! The thought of it makes me sad and worried, so it must be a bad idea!"

But then they'll go on to give me this pseudo-psychoanalysis, where they'll tell me all about how I need to start adhering to "happier", more "optimistic" philosophies.

It's like people don't even know what philosophy is.

It's a description of reality.
There are accurate descriptions of reality, and inaccurate descriptions of reality.
It doesn't matter how it makes you feel.

"Philosophy...[is] a description of reality"

In literally the broadest sense applicable, sure. Any method of inquiry, be it philosophical, scientific, ethical, metaphysical, etc. is a description of reality, and there are accurate and inaccurate ones. Anti-Natalism focuses largely on the suffering that is inherent to life, leading to the immorality of birthing new, sapient beings; that seems pretty heavily-focused on how one feels, and is largely why there's such widespread opposition: the vast majority of people would disagree with that premise because they do not feel like their life is so insufferable that their existence was an act of immorality on the part of their parents. I'm not trying to debate the merit of your position because that won't lead anywhere, but you can certainly justify telling someone to "try a happier philosophy" much in the same way I could recommend a scientist try a different tool when measuring experiments. Some will work better, some will work worse. But if you're unhappy, or the tool you're using doesn't seem to be working (regardless of whether it seems like it's the only one that should work), then there's no harm in trying a new one.

You guys dissing FF are dumb. That was the most fun thing in the game.

The way it was implemented in matchmaking was awful. Playing an actual survival gametype was fun as hell like in ODST, but the arcadefight shit was terribad.
Nonsense. I always had a fucking blast with it.

I actually liked Reach's firefight more than ODST's. It was nice having a chance to win, not hiding from enemies and running out of ammo 5 minutes in.

I really liked Reach. Given the time we had with each member of Noble team I felt they did a decent job of conveying personality. A game doesn't need to face-fuck me with daddy issues and personal drama for me to enjoy the characters. The missions were diverse and they did some interesting stuff with the plot despite the fact that we should have already known everything. I liked that Bungie didn't just coast on what Halo 3 did right, and actually made risky decisions to include many new features.

As for the 'Covenant is on Reach' radio call, that's just radio discipline. It would've been worse if the guy had been freaking out and screaming.

http://www.cracked.com/personal-experiences-1762-5-reasons-i-lost-249000-iphone-game.html

You can read the Cracked article about Game of War, but the tl;dr is that many people are spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on pay-to-win, Skinner Box-esque games that are outwardly predatory, relying on addiction to the game to bring in revenue. This is very similar to gambling, except the player has no chance to win money or recoup losses. Obviously it's entirely the player's choice (or is it?), but there's a strong component of addiction that leads people to spend beyond their means on a completely trivial game whose purpose isn't to deliver enjoyment, but to wring its customers dry until they suffer extreme monetary loss to the point of no recovery. The article talks about fairly common examples of higher-level players losing thousands of dollars in assets in a single attack, forcing players to spend money to protect their forces (bought with real money) each day they choose not to play, at progressively high prices. The game essentially forces you to buy more and more, lest you lose all that you currently have in it (I avoid saying 'all that you've put into it' because troops, which cost actual dollars, can easily be lost and there is no way to regain them).

So I'm all for people taking account of their action, but this type of model seems highly predatory and unethical. What are your thoughts on the title premise, that games such as this ought to be regulated similarly to gambling to prevent, or at least reduce, the amount of abusive practices they can exhibit?
