I never can remember specific passages, but Speaker for the Dead had a really compelling notion of funerals, where instead of having a eulogy talk about all the great things you did (or often just talk vaguely about how smart and nice and funny the deceased was), the speaking should be an honest retelling of the person's life so that they can truly be remembered for who they were, and the person giving that speech should do thorough research to be as truthful as possible.
But my favorite science author has a great idiom: "Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law."

In your opinion then, what's the difference between your life and another life?
Because I'm a sapient human being and a cat is not. I value my life, or another person's life, significantly more than any other animal's.
Even if you know that most likely once a life is gone it won't ever exist again, therefore making whatever time any living thing has extremely valuable? Even if you had the capacity to save something with decent chances, even if it was costly?
This is a scenario where you literally have the ability to make every end meet, and you still wouldn't take it? That's the part I'm not sold on. Why place such a difference on a life? This isn't "Pick either to save your family or the pet from the house fire."
Can you explain to me the sense in that? And let's not go the monetary road, because you'd end up spending more money to save yourself in the same situation than a pet. So the pet being costly, no longer counts.
Look, I'm not even sure what you're asking at this point. Humans have more value than other animals, period. If someone gave me $5000 I probably would go with the surgery for my pet. If I needed life-saving surgery in my mid-forties and it would put me in significant financial distress I'd do it.

Vodka and ginger ale is the best mixed drink tbh
Put equal parts vodka and lime juice in and call it a Moscow Mule. Ginger ale has a bit of flavor, but vodka should pretty much always be combined with fruit juice because of how little flavor is in vodka.

As far as cocktails go, it's fucking disgusting. Thinking of it as spicey V8 juice, it was pretty good. It's super weird that it's a typical drink for brunch; it'd be better before a burger or something meaty rather than eggs.
That's all.

I wouldn't spend $5,000 on my cat.
Why not exactly? Can you give me some specifics?
$5000 is more than my current emergency fund. I know in the hypothetical scenario I have the money, but unless it's a situation where someone just handed me $5k I still have to approach it from the perspective of my financial situation. If the medical procedures were covered by my pet insurance, I'd probably do it, but if it's an old cat that's in a lot of pain, I think the best option is to just put him down.
I changed it up a bit. The medical route has no pain because the pet is medicated. Do you change your stance?
No, it's not an issue of their pain, it's an issue of me not ever wanting to spend $5,000 on an elderly pet.
Okay. That's fair. What if we changed the scenario?
You, personally, are now in a serious medical condition. You're going to die if you don't recieve medical treatment. Your significant other will have to pay a large fee for the medical aid involved. And the condition you have will come back in give or take, a decade or two. And you're late middle aged.
What would you personally choose happen to you?
And what would you prefer that your significant other do?
Well of course I'd want her to pay it.

I joined a month after TTK came out and now everyone on the LFG site requires experience and gear I can't get without doing the raid. I'm free any time today, and could do tomorrow. If you're down to do the raid (on normal), let me know. Titan, any subclass, LL291 so it should be fine. On Xbox One. Plus, I don't think I've ever played Live with any of you so it'd be cool to get that chance.

Fuck.
I'm sitting on an i5 and I'm a little concerned about this even though it meets the min spec. Battlefront 3 also wanted an i5 minimum and when I launch it it rapes my CPU taking up something like 90+%. I hope Fallout doesn't do the same
All the other components are fairly mid-range, maybe on the upper end. But that's like a $320 processor right there, and I just upgraded to a 3.4 five months ago.

Do you need the actual proof for it? It's x^2 because the height is the same as the base.

Kanye makes great music and seems like a good dad. His public persona is like Nicki Minaj or Lady Gaga -- it's just a schtick.
Though if Kim were pregnant I'd probably go for her first.

It still blows my mind that people are going to pay for emotes. Not even armor cosmetic upgrades or shaders.
Emotes.

As interesting as NASA's work tends to be, does anyone else question the amount of good it does for us compared to the value we might find in investing in things like bioengineering research? Of course, this might not have been the case in the past, but I wonder if we've extracted most of the direct technological progress from space travel that we can. There are problems that remain to be solved, of course, but I wonder if there aren't more lucrative opportunities we could address now.
It's difficult to see the benefit of launching billions of dollars worth of technology into space, never to be recovered, but here are some technological advancements that we can attribute to NASA: https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2008/tech_benefits.htmlIn addition, almost every major advancement in computing has been strongly funded by NASA for use in mission equipment, such as microprocessors. Space exploration is arguably the second highest source of technological expansion, the first being war.

I wouldn't put any stock in that rumor, but that part about 'Boba Fett' being a title and not a specific character is just the dumbest theory.

Might be better to sell the idea to someone unless he's prepared to start his own business. It's definitely achievable, but it's a lot more work (though a higher return on investment).

I'm not talking about big authors or series; obviously things like Harry Potter or a Stephen King book are going to be almost universally liked. I'm talking about books that you picked up on a whim or suggestion and turned out to be great.
Some examples for me: -The Martian -Ender's Game (though I'd argue that by now it's a very popular book and shouldn't be included) -The Name of the Wind
Looking for some new books to pick up now that I finished my slog through ASoIAF.

Change it in the settings.

I'm really not liking the range of most firefights, at least in Walker Assault. I liked the nice medium between long range and arena fighting that the original BFs had.
The fact that everyone has to be given a sniper rifle tells me the map isn't arranged well.
