They probably haven't read it and are just espousing what others have said.
There are sex scenes, but it's mostly a few sentences of foreplay and then a transition to a later scene.
To add to this, I'd only really call one scene in the series grisly ('Arya Stark' at Winterfell), and even then, most (all) of what happens is implied rather than told.
If anything, I'd call scenes like Biter eating brienne, quentyn deciding to play with dragons and the descriptions of theon's torture to be much more harrowing than any of the sex scenes. Aside from the aforementioned.
Quentyn and the dragons...I had to re-read that bit because I couldn't believe it had happened.

Martin is known for his realistic take on fantasy.
That's the problem. Everyone tries too hard to be realistic nowadays. Like, apparently he writes his sex scenes in grisly, stomach-churning detail so that there's no eroticism whatsoever. It's like, what the fuck? Why bother?

A seemingly generic (but actually detailed and unique) fantasy adventure with a very detailed system of magic and unbelievably good writing. There are currently two books, with the last in the trilogy coming out next year.

I can't into words, but it sounds dumb to start taking a bunch of artificial sugar just because you can't take as much real sugar anymore.
Yeah, to some extent I think we've gone too far with being used to sweet and fatty foods, and I think everyone would benefit from making their diet less reliant on sweeteners, but replacing 300 calories of pure sugar in a widely available soft drink with a fairly decent, zero calorie substitute seems like a middle ground. Kind of like banning trans fats and stuff like that.

Seeing as heart disease caused by excessive sugars and fats in our diet is the leading cause of death in the U.S., one probably wouldn't question too hard the use of a proven harmless substance. Aspartame use is arguably a more thoroughly researched science than GMOs at this point. It is literally just a basic composition of two amino acids that break down exactly the same way as protein, and is 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Is actually racist to say that black students (or any marginalized group) often benefit from a less rigorous curriculum, affirmative action can result in poor performance? The people calling this racist are also the same people who would be quick to point out that poor black students typically underperform.

Okay, so I got him a book written by a local poet from my town, a CD by a local ska band, a local news magazine (he's a journalist and loves that shit), and I'm gonna get him his favorite kind of beer from a local brewery. I had to use Amazon for the book, so hopefully that pisses him off. He sounds like a complete ass.
