Now tell this to the thirty or so people that have told me otherwise. They probably haven't read it and are just espousing what others have said. There are sex scenes, but it's mostly a few sentences of foreplay and then a transition to a later scene. 3816
The Flood / Re: Just finished A Dance With Dragons (Song of Ice and Fire)« on: December 11, 2015, 01:39:04 PM »That's the problem. Everyone tries too hard to be realistic nowadays. Like, apparently he writes his sex scenes in grisly, stomach-churning detail so that there's no eroticism whatsoever. It's like, what the fuck? Why bother?I like my stories to be rooted somewhat in reality. Otherwise, I just couldn't a fuck about anybody or anything that happens. It's boring to me.Martin is known for his realistic take on fantasy. No...There's almost no sex in the books whatsoever, and none of it is grisly. 3817

A seemingly generic (but actually detailed and unique) fantasy adventure with a very detailed system of magic and unbelievably good writing. There are currently two books, with the last in the trilogy coming out next year. 3818

The Flood / Re: Why do hospitals only sell diet pop?« on: December 10, 2015, 10:45:14 PM »I can't into words, but it sounds dumb to start taking a bunch of artificial sugar just because you can't take as much real sugar anymore. Yeah, to some extent I think we've gone too far with being used to sweet and fatty foods, and I think everyone would benefit from making their diet less reliant on sweeteners, but replacing 300 calories of pure sugar in a widely available soft drink with a fairly decent, zero calorie substitute seems like a middle ground. Kind of like banning trans fats and stuff like that. 3820

Aspartame is literally a carcinogen. It is less sugary though, unless you meant sweet, at which point you're just arbitrarily vilifying a flavor. 3822
The Flood / Re: Why do hospitals only sell diet pop?« on: December 10, 2015, 10:27:47 PM »One would still question using it in the first place. There's no evidence artificial sweeteners are dangerous in any reasonable dosageFuck off. Aspartame is literally a carcinogen. Seeing as heart disease caused by excessive sugars and fats in our diet is the leading cause of death in the U.S., one probably wouldn't question too hard the use of a proven harmless substance. Aspartame use is arguably a more thoroughly researched science than GMOs at this point. It is literally just a basic composition of two amino acids that break down exactly the same way as protein, and is 200 times sweeter than sugar. 3823

Aspartame is literally a carcinogen. Quite a lot of carcinogens exist in natural foods like meat and fruit. The poison is in the dosage, not the substance. That said, aspartame isn't on any list of known carcinogens. 3825

The Flood / Re: Why do hospitals only sell diet pop?« on: December 10, 2015, 04:05:50 PM »There's no evidence artificial sweeteners are dangerous in any reasonable dosage, and regular soda has more sugar than you should have in two days.Neither is Mercury at a reasonable dosage. Exactly. It's safe to eat a salmon fillet for the same reason it's safe to drink a diet soda. There's very little difference in veracity between a claim that vaccines are unhealthy and that aspartame is unhealthy. 3827

http://thinkprogress.org/education/2015/12/09/3730166/scalia-affirmative-action-slower-track/
Quote During oral arguments on a case that may eliminate race conscious affirmative action, Justice Antonin Scalia said that “most of the black scientists in this country do not come from the most advanced schools” and added that black students do better in a “slower track.” There's more in the article. First of all, it's unfair of ThinkProgress to attribute these quotes to Scalia, since he was quoting a brief of another attorney. It appears he was using them as an argument, but the citations used here seem very cherrypicked. Anyway, the point isn't shit on Scalia but to discuss the legitimacy of his claims. Is actually racist to say that black students (or any marginalized group) often benefit from a less rigorous curriculum, affirmative action can result in poor performance? The people calling this racist are also the same people who would be quick to point out that poor black students typically underperform. 3829

Because the empire was huge and compartmentalized by moffs and governors. It seems that there was a lengthy cold war following VI culminating in the creation of Starkiller Base, sparking the conflict we'll see in VII.
