Is ANYTHING a legitimate criticism to you?
Sure. Plot, pacing, character development, writing style, consistency, settings, verbiage, structure, tone, mood, enjoyment, relatability, etc. All of this is perfectly legitimate.
Quote
Why is it not a legitimate criticism? Because the author acknowledges that he sucks?
First of all, because it's already widely recognized as a weak area by readers and the author; The criticism is vapid and uninspired. Second, it's not legitimate because it's an incredibly cherry-picked and narrow scope of criticism that is being used to judge the merit of the work as a whole. You've also already decided that you don't like the books, so it's heavily influencing your view. I wouldn't say it's particularly bad or good; it's just two lines in a book. Taken as a whole that chapter's really well-written and interesting; that section in particular tells a lot about a character we haven't seen much in a POV setting. It wasn't meant to be erotic or arousing, it's just a very Martin-like matter-of-fact telling of events.

Sex is icky. Go read Harry Potter or The Cat in the Hat.
Where did I say it was icky? I made a comment about the "spent his seed inside her womb" part being something that would be in a hentai or a sex comic. That is a poorly writing line.

A poorly written line in a thousand page book? Cry me a river. Picking apart a single line or paragraph from a sex scene (which the author admits are a weak area of his, which is why they're so sparse and brief) is just low hanging fruit. It's not a legitimate criticism.

If you're going to lose control of a controlled burn then you should be held liable for all damages and potential criminal charges associated with that act.

Yeah that's true, and I imagine they would have been willing to pay those fines. But charged with arson and terrorism, and thrown in jail for years? No way.

like why
Because women like it for some reason

Women like it if you're a fit, well-dressed, attractive guy, and at that point you could wear your hair however you want.

Well if feminine arousal and vaginas cause you intense horror and distress, I can't tell you otherwise.

ASoIaF doesn't pull punches, but it's sure as shit not the fuckfest you seem to think it is. You haven't even read a single one of the books, and you're calling it pornography based on the existence of the rare sex scene. It's just silly.

I never said that. I said they're few and far between, and none of them are gory or particularly graphic.
Except, you know, the one that was just posted. And it was just a fragment.

none of that was grisly.
Fucking how.

It's just not grisly or particularly graphic. I'm not sure what you want me to say. Is 'cunt' the offending word? Because you say it all the time. Is it the sopping wet part? That's just feminine arousal. Martin writes about characters eating, drinking, sleeping, walking, fighting, talking, and on very rare occasions, fucking. That bothers you, and nothing I can say will change that.

Nvm, you found my post. It's still accurate; none of that was grisly.

I could direct you to essays, books, podcasts, and theologists, but that's not what you're asking for.
I'd nevertheless be interested, particularly in books and podcasts.

The Liturgists is a great podcast hosted by an agnostic scientist with interesting guests each week. One I recently listened to (titled something along the lines of 'Radical Theology') had some unique arguments from a purely philosophical perspective.

Just Thinking (or Let My People Think) is a compilation of lectures and debates by one of my favorite theologist, Ravi Zacharias. Just pick subjects that sound interesting.

The Question of God is an interesting comparison of C. S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud. Lewis is an atheist turned Christian, and Freud was a theist turned atheist. It compares their arguments and lives.

Mere Christianity and The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis, the former being a basic theological justification for Christianity, the latter presenting arguments as allegories.

Some others I can add when I get home because I can't think of others.

As for society developing a stronger moral system than Christianity, sure, I think it could. The obnoxious Christian part of me would explain that it's because God can exert his will through whomever he wants. But no, I wouldn't say that society couldn't come up with a more good system of morality than institutionalized religion. Separated from the influence of Christianity, I think that would be very unlikely.

I'm asking if he has a rational basis because I'd like to know if he has one.

I do, but I don't have a manifesto of arguments comprising the years of scholarship and reflection. In short there's compelling evidence for a conscious creator (not necessarily for an anthropomorphic view of such), strong evidence for the Bible as a source of historical and moral information over all other religious texts, and arguments for Christianity being a supreme good in the world. I could direct you to essays, books, podcasts, and theologists, but that's not what you're asking for.

But why do you believe? And I don't want any of that "It's about faith" or "I was raised that way" stuff. I mean a rational, maybe even empirical, reason.
I don't know how to give a satisfactory answer to this.

Yes, there's a lot written.
For the books how many pages are there to them that are useless shit which has no bearing on the main story? My dad reads them and he told me one book has a hundred pages that's about some random. He said they were about the guy's journey to meet Daenerys and at the end of it he gets eating by a dragon.

His story is actually really important.
He was pretty much the sole reason I lost interest in the books for so long though. Completely uninteresting character and as such it was impossible to give a shit about him at all. He was only (sort of) redeemed at the very end of his last chapter, and that was because he gets brutally killed.

His shit was great, though. The series desperately needed new characters and world-building outside the established set of POV characters, and his story provided a lot of insight into the south and Essos.

Mago, Irri, Rakharo, Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Pyat Pree, Pyp, Grenn, Ser Barristan Selmy, Queen Selyse, Princess Shireen, Princess Myrcella, Mance Rayder, and King Stannis are all dead in the show, alive in the books.

So Stannis is confirmed dead in the show.

Gaming / Re: Why does everybody lose their shit over KOTOR?

Bioware's games that have turned based combat seem to be pretty shit, at least in my opinion. KoToR, TOR, Dragon Age.
None of those games have turn based combat.

KOTOR is definitely turn-based, even if you play it in real-time without any pauses.
Yes when it comes down to combat it is turn based like. When you're firing at someone that NPC takes time to avoid it and then they fire at you. What I said there would be you fire at them and when you are done firing that NPC fires back. There are some combat encounters where each person is taking a turn during attacking. But that still doesn't make it a true turn based game like Fallout 1 or 2.

If it was truly a turn based game like Fallout 1 and 2 you or only one NPC at a time would have so many actions during a turn. Those actions would be counted towards either movement, combat or doing something with an item. But in KoTOR everybody is attacking or moving around at the same time instead of only one person doing an action at a time. The game is not truly a turn based game when an NPC is firing at me and I'm moving around during it.

Rounds are commenced simultaneously, with the same effect as if it was sequential. It's turn-based combat that can be executed in real-time by queuing moves. Overall I'm not really sure what the point of this argument is.

Different churches, but they should all follow the same teaching. Hence why Paul would tell this church to change how they are doing this or that.

Let's get right on that as soon as we have a unified set of teachings, then. There are three distinct variations of Christianity that claim to have apostolic authority heralding back to Peter, with traditions and liturgies to boot. They've turned tradition and sacrament into a security blanket against change, doubt, and self-reflection. And on the other end of the spectrum there's Protestants ranging from Baptists in denial of their Catholicism to non-denominational mega-churches who burned down the cathedrals and are sitting in the ashes wondering what they they meant to build in its place.

There is no The Church. Any church founded on the principles of Jesus, most importantly the sacrifice and redemption of Christ, is the church. A critical point in a Christian's spiritual growth is the realization that the building, the sermon, the preacher, and all the Sunday goings-on are the least important part of the religion.

FFVII is turn based combat. KOTOR is real time combat.

What does FF7 have to do with anything? KOTOR is not real time; it hides the rounds if you change the settings to do so, but it is a series of rounds with pauses between each.

Regardless, DA and TOR combat is pretty solid. Definitely not shit. KOTOR is the worst of the three, IMO.

Abrams is only directing one of them, and Kylo Ren is part of the Skywalker family. It doesn't need more.
