The Flood / Re: Anyone have experience with dog separation anxiety?« on: January 06, 2016, 12:41:15 PM »If it was a rescue dog, chances are they were abandoned? (If you know the history, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely then do say so) and that's obviously going to leave a mental scar on the dog, as it would with humans. The anxiety probably stems from that (if it's the case) so really unless the behavioural therapy classes work out it's just a matter of time and patience. Yeah, we think he was the result of a breeder getting loose and mating with a random dog so the owners abandoned him. He was found wandering the forest as a puppy and hadn't had a long-term home until he was adopted by us at age 3. I'd be fine with his symptoms except recently he's been frequently breaking out of his crate and eating anything he can find, and I'm concerned that some day he'll hurt himself while we're gone. 3612
The Flood / Re: Anyone have experience with dog separation anxiety?« on: January 06, 2016, 12:36:56 PM »It does actually. Aussie sheps are extremely high energy dogs. It sounds like you need an outlet for your dog to expel that energy in a more healthy way. What breed is your dog? He walks at least twice a day, and I run him upwards of a mile nearly every day. At home he's an incredibly lazy dog. You adopted him from a kennel, right?Yep 3613
The Flood / Re: Anyone have experience with dog separation anxiety?« on: January 06, 2016, 12:32:33 PM »What breed is your dog? Aussie Shepherd mix. I don't think it matters though; like I said, it was a sudden change in behavior. We think it happened as soon as he started seeing us as his family rather than just another foster home, but it's really odd because we can leave him with other people just fine. 3614
The Flood / Re: Anyone have experience with dog separation anxiety?« on: January 06, 2016, 12:30:40 PM »We tried that every day for weeks. Literally nothing has made any improvement. We started with 30 seconds intervals and he never really got past that, and our vet advised us to stop after seeing no progress because the constant stress isn't good for him.Does he behave like this no matter who leaves? Well yeah, it's being left alone in general. If literally anybody is anywhere in the house he's fine. 3615

Serious / Re: On the matter of women and the vote« on: January 06, 2016, 11:29:55 AM »But there is however, an emerging line of thought which purports that there is absolutely no innate statistical differences between men and women whatsoever, and that gender is a social construct etc.I don't know why it became so controversial to say that men and women are psychologically and anatomically different. Do you have any examples of this in academia? And for the record, gender is partially a social construct. 3618
The Flood / Anyone have experience with dog separation anxiety?« on: January 06, 2016, 11:00:28 AM »
About a month after adopting Charlie he had a sudden behavioral change that resulted in extreme anxiety when he's home alone. If he's in a crate he'll chew anything he can get his mouth on, pant excessively, or scratch the crate and attempt to break out (which he's done several times). Outside of the crate he'll run around eating anything he can, peeing, and scratching at the door. He displayed none of these symptoms prior to that behavioral change, and he's displayed it in two separate houses, so it's not just environmental. Having another dog in the room doesn't help, and he's completely fine in the same place (out of sight) at night.
We've tried pheromones, puzzle toys, white noise, and everything else you can think of. Now we're moving on to medication and then potentially behavioral therapy. Has anyone else had to medicate their dog for anything like this? Did it work? 3619

Serious / Re: On the matter of women and the vote« on: January 05, 2016, 09:07:31 PM »I don't believe the ends justify the means Just curious: how do you measure the "goodness" of a political system? Is complete freedom, absent a government, better because it allows more freedom intrinsically than would a form of organized government (be it democracy, authoritarianism, or something in between)? Basically I'm asking if freedom is the end-all-be-all of how you judge society. Also OT: we don't really talk about it, but democracies certainly do discriminate against voters, notably in regards to age. It doesn't seem unreasonable to prohibit certain groups of people from voting for the same justification we use to prohibit minors from doing so. 3624

Serious / Re: On the matter of women and the vote« on: January 05, 2016, 08:48:06 PM »Quote I do not believe in the right to vote. We've all been over why I feel this way, most of you disagree with me. I don't believe humans have the right to exercise control over one another, especially not based on numerical majority. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but this is the first time I've heard you express this. I know it's kind of shitty to ask someone to dig up old posts, but if you've made any threads about it I'd be down to read them. I think all of this is mostly unexplored territory for many people here, including myself. As much as I'll argue partisanship on here I haven't even considered the notion that the right to vote is anything but a boon on society. 3626
Gaming / Re: Do you guys like my reviews?« on: January 05, 2016, 08:27:21 PM »
They're not very comprehensive; you tend to focus on one or two things that really bugged you and talk about that, or a general outline of the plot with stuff you thought was fun. It kind of reminds me of reviewers like Jeremy Jahns, where it's less of a critical review and just a video game fan talking about what was good or bad. So if that's the angle you're going for, it's good.

I can do that, but I really don't feel like it because it's like half-formed as is. As long as it's presented cogently instead of just a flippant remark like it was here I'd be interested in hearing your rationale. Separate thread maybe? 3628
