Not to spoil anything, but pyromancy is a great option for beginners because it's fairly powerful and lets you experience both magic and melee combat in a good mix. Plus you can get a good set of armor for it fairly quickly.

It's pretty horrifying that his plan to pay for college tuition and housing by taxing speculators assumes a 50% fall in trading as a result of the tax.
Just a reminder that the stock market isn't just a profit-pool for rich bankers, it's the source of gains for retirement plans, insurance groups, philanthropic investments, shareholders, and small businesses. It doesn't exist just to be taxed whenever the government desires. 3518

Another year of journalists claiming the AMPAS is racist for not nominating any black actors or actresses for the four relevant categories. I'm not familiar with some of the supporting actors, but the leading roles are pretty spot-on in my opinion. You can see the full list of nominees here: http://oscar.go.com/nominees From the article: 1. Michael B. Jordan, “Creed”: I'm not too surprised this didn't get him a nomination. It was a good performance but nothing that stands out. 2. O’Shea Jackson Jr., “Straight Outta Compton”: This was a legitimately great performance for a debut performance, but nowhere near Oscar-worthy. 3. Abraham Attah, “Beasts of No Nation”: Didn't see this, but generally it's very rare for children to be nominated, let alone win an Oscar. 4. Jada Pinkett Smith, “Magic Mike XXL”: Nope. 5. Audra McDonald, “Ricki and the Flash”: Nobody in this film deserves a nomination. 6. Adepero Oduye, “The Big Short”: A pretty by-the-numbers performance, and she was only on-screen for about 5 minutes total, if that. 7. John Boyega, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”: Another good debut performance but it was nothing special. 8. Teyonah Parris, “Chi-Raq”: Didn't see this one, but Parris is a great actress from what I've seen. From reviews of this film I could definitely see her being eligible for a nomination. Anyways, what're your thoughts? 3527
Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 12:52:28 PM »Yes, you can.But I can't play online with friends without risking getting invaded. If you're playing with a friend the game becomes significantly easier. Invasions balance that out, though they're rare. Just like how powerful weapons are also slower and thus leave you open to attack, the ability to summon humans or NPCs to assist you have the downside of allowing sporadic challenges through invasions. Speaking of co-op, which platform are you going to play it on? I'm down to play sometime. I think I'd have to make a new character to meet level requirements though. 3528

Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 12:35:44 PM »If invasions were comprised of NPC characters alone, then it wouldn't be a problem--it would be like a random encounter in your average RPG. But instead, we have real human beings actively fucking each other over for "fun." I'm having trouble reconciling your acceptance of NPC invasions (which do happen at specific points in the game) and human invasions. It's not done to fuck anyone over, it's done as a challenge for both participants. The invader is put at a significant disadvantage and cost; all duel etiquette goes out the window if you're trying to clear an area and you get invaded. You can gank, run, ambush, heal, etc., and the host reaps significantly more reward than the invader -- not to mention that if you get killed by an invader, you can 'indict' them so that they get added to a list of players to be targeted by one faction of players. There are also several indicators that you're going to be invaded, well in advance of the dialog box telling you, such as fog walls and some PvP or interactive items (white sign soapstone, namely) becoming unavailable, allowing you to exit and return to the game before the invasion occurs. 3531
Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 12:24:46 PM »If you, yourself, do not feel like you have sufficiently consented to invasions, then don't use the item. It's that simple. You keep referencing this "item" I've seen nobody else talk about. What exactly does it do? Humanity is an item that provides a stacked effect (potent up to 10, but stackable to 99). It increases item discovery, restores all HP, provides a new stat that is tied to chaos-type weapons, and most importantly allows you to summon or invade players or NPCs. Quote If it does anything else along with opening the doors for invasion, then that's a terrible mechanic. The benefits exist specifically to offset the risk of invasion. 3532

Cogency is irrelevant when the brunt of your argument is "I don't like this, and you're stupid if you disagree". You've presented no argument other than repeating ad nauseam that you don't see the use of an optional item designed specifically to allow you to engage other players as consenting. Clearly everyone else in this thread disagrees. If you, yourself, do not feel like you have sufficiently consented to invasions, then don't use the item. It's that simple. Unless you've managed to somehow co-opt every other DkS players' agency to consent, your argument holds no water. 3534

Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 11:41:29 AM »Consent is objective. You enjoy it for poor, unsubstantiated reasons, as opposed to my reasons for not enjoying it. My "unsubstantiated" reason is that a player explicitly consents to invasion by using the only item in the game which allows your character to be invaded, whose sole purpose is to open a player to PvP interaction. When using an estus flask, I explicitly consent to health being restored. If at any point while playing DkS I felt uncomfortable with the prospect of being invaded (and I did on numerous occasions), I would negate my consent for invasion by removing humanity or playing offline. Obviously there is no system that holds your hand and expressly asks you to agree to be invaded by a specific player; that would be ridiculous. This game won't coddle you and it will challenge your skill as well as how you think a game should play ("why do I lose my money/experience when I die?", "why can't I skip this boss?", "why don't they just tell me the story?"). I've told you before but this game just isn't in your wheelhouse, though I'd loved to be proved wrong. Your supposedly substantiated reason is that you don't like the consequence of using the item. That's it. This attitude is the source of pretty much every problem people have with you on this site: you always consider your viewpoints objective, obvious, and well-supported. You rarely open yourself to the consideration that something you believe could be incorrect, and when you do you spin it to show your previous opinion was right anyway. 3536
Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 11:26:26 AM »Neither are you.Better than anyone else is. Your argument is little more than you repeating that you don't consent to invasions, and you don't like that. It's really not an argument at all, it's just you espousing personal preference. I think 'consent' is a pretty irrelevant thing to talk about in regards to video games, but despite that I feel completely consenting when I get invaded while human in DkS. It's not a debate, it's just opposing opinions. I'm sorry you don't like a feature of a video game that you haven't even experienced; quite a lot of people enjoy it, and your personal criterion of consent for enjoyment isn't universal or objective. 3537
Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 10:38:50 AM »I've always felt that I'm explicitly consenting to invasions when using humanity in Dark SoulsYou're not, though. Nothing's implicit. The game tells you very straightforwardly that use of humanity opens you to invasion and allows you to summon players or NPCs for help. If I choose to use the item, I am choosing to allow invaders. I feel like this discussion has been blown completely out of proportion, too; unless you're hanging around dueling locations, you're likely to be invaded maybe once or twice in your playthrough. 3538
Gaming / Re: Video Games, consent, and you.« on: January 14, 2016, 09:04:44 AM »
I've always felt that I'm explicitly consenting to invasions when using humanity in Dark Souls, and when using the beckoning bell in Bloodborne. If I'm really just not in the mood (say, after finally slogging through all of Blighttown) I'd just force quit from an invasion. Or use chameleon, ring of fog, or silver talisman and just hang out until they leave.
