The Flood / Re: Why am I banned from serious
« on: February 20, 2016, 10:21:37 PM »
I think you told someone to go fuck themselves for implying you're racist.
Oh yeah. Charlie said something about me not caring about Teryvon Martin and not thinking of him as a person when in fact I don't know a single person who is a bigger advocator for human rights than me.
Not sure that warrants a ban though. How long is it?

Pretty sure it's one day.

The sticky has been up for at least two months now, and it's straightforward. If you don't get it, one of us would be happy to explain in more detail.

I have a feeling that explanation would differ by each mod. Sometimes posts are edited, sometimes there's a ban involved, and often things are just ignored unless something is as forward as "fuck you". You guys frequently ignore intent over message. Charlie attacked the guy's character and you don't care, but he responds in kind and gets a ban. It's just a day, no big deal, but still, no need to be quippy when it's obvious moderation is anything but standardized.

Kasich/Bush 2016, baby.

Is it weird that the old white dudes are the most moderate Republicans in the running?

Upgraded from the Sidewinder to the Hauler, threw in all D2 equipment, A2 FSD, and a bunch of storage. Sold the gun and the shields, and just realized you can plot faster routes over economic routes. The game's much better at this point.

Rubio/Bush would be crazy...I really doubt he'll seek a VP spot.

Calling out most of this forum as racists is definitely a great way to start a friendly dialog about race in America.

Well that's better than zero.

I'm not even sure what I would do in a Trump/Hillary race.

As long as people agree that research needs to be done, we'll provide them the resources to do it. Right?

I think salary and closed-access publication are separate issues that we're mistakenly mixing together. I do support open-access research, and I think that's the direction the industry is moving, shifting costs at the same time (because the costs don't just disappear). I'm pretty mixed on pirating these papers as a substitute to open-access research though.

I'd expect a good scientist to do what they do out of a passion for the subject and a wish to further our collective knowledge of the world around us. If getting money is your primary reason for becoming a scientist, you should probably think about your priorities.

I don't understand why you're creating this untenable dichotomy of scientific passion versus salary. The vast majority of science is laborious, boring, and minuscule in scope; it's not groundbreaking or requisite of this romanticized "scientific passion" you seem to think is inherent in the field.

Do you think everyone has a right to all the raw data or analysis in the papers? Or just the conclusions? Because conclusions in laymen's terms are always available in the free abstract of the paper.
For the purpose of verification, maybe, yeah, I don't see why not. I'm not into blindly accepting conclusions at face value just because an authority says so--if the raw data and analysis were available for scrutiny as well, I think that would be enlightening in a number of ways.

If you disagree, please give me an example of research you'd personally keep from the public eye, for any reason.
Just off the top of my head:

Patents
Intellectual property
Private research for businesses like market or production analyses
Classified information that could endanger people
Medical research whose publication would violate privacy rights

But really it's not about unavailability to the public, it's about scientists being funded and paid for their work. The research we're actually talking about is publicly available, just not freely.

If you're doing science because you want money, and reward you're not a good scientist

Is it unfathomable that passionate scientists could want to also be able to afford to provide for their families or themselves, plan for the future or retirement, or even be able to continue to do research?

One of the primary barriers to research is lack of funding, though.
Well, sure, but that doesn't mean we have to start crossing your palms with silver just to give people what they fundamentally deserve to have access to from birth.

Do you think everyone has a right to all the raw data or analysis in the papers? Or just the conclusions? Because conclusions in laymen's terms are always available in the free abstract of the paper.

Research and creating papers like this doesn't come cheap, and people don't usually spend tremendous amounts of time and effort just to better humanity. They want something in return.
Boohoo. Fuck them.

One of the primary barriers to research is lack of funding, though.

It's a good game, but I wish  there was more to it than flying around and killing things. That's why I'm looking forward to the Star Citizen Beta Stage.

There's really not even much combat until you've slogged through enough mining and trading to afford a decent ship for bounty hunting or piracy.

You don't have any concept of what "race" is, not me.

What's your personal definition of race?

I agree with Door that it's a defunct construct, but I want to hear what you think it is.

Yeah that's called a race.

Well again, you don't really seem to have any concept of what 'race' is, so this isn't going anywhere.

Let's just call the guy a racist and leave it at that. He's a moron for posting that on Facebook and he's a racist for mocking a national stereotype. What an enlightening discussion.
I'm curious what Obama's face is supposed to be doing in this picture. He looks concerned or something, with those big eyes.

I'm more curious to where that macro originated. Either he or one of his staffers found it. What if it was created on Stormfront? That says SOMEONE is visiting that site, or is friends with someone who does...
Stuff like that's all over places like Reddit and Chive. The shitty thing is that jokes like this are really common on imageboards.

This isn't even about free information, it's about scientists having access to publications for their work. On one hand, researchers should have access to what they need for their work (and they typically do through subscriptions made by whoever is funding them), but on the other, research is difficult and requires funding, and scientists deserve to get paid for their work despite some indefensible claims that access to information is a human right.

So I completely suck at this. Do I just keep doing station missions until I get the hang of things? I've seen guides talking about going around and scanning signals, but I don't have a clue how to scan something, let alone how to actually navigate in supercruise without blowing past my target.
There are tutorials online if you know where to look. Missions from the bulletin board honestly suck for early-game cashola (even though they totally shouldn't).

Any tutorial in particular you can recommend? I have one up now and it basically starts by saying "go scan signals in nearby systems and sell the data every hour, and at 20k buy a mining laser and mine stuff". I don't even know how to scan signals or sell data. Whenever I get close to a signal in supercruise, I blow right past it, and if I drop to sublight it's too far away.
FML, damn board didn't even tell me you'd replied.

If I remember tomorrow I can link some tutorials that helped me if you still need some.

Nope, I'm good now. I still get annoyed by overshooting stations in supercruise even at the blue speed, but whatever. I've moved on to trading now, using Thrudd's. It's going alright so far.

Nah you're racist because of how desperate you are to defend a racist asshole.

That's an incredibly childish mindset to have.

You have absolutely no argument and you're getting personal to distract from the real issue. Like I said, just the fact you don't even consider the Mexicans a race is extremely racist. If they're not a race, what are they? Latinos? They're not a race either? What the fuck are the Mexicans then?
Mexicans are people from Mexico, or their descendants. Mexico is multiethnic and multiracial; it is not a single race or ethnicity, just like Californians aren't a race or ethnicity. There's such cultural and genetic diversity among Mexicans that it's just blatantly ridiculous to pigeonhole them as one ethnic group. And none of this has anything to do with my original premise that sharing a single offensive picture on Facebook warrants being labelled a racist. Maybe he is, actually; it's just ridiculous to think you can derive so much about a person (some old white politician who probably barely knows how social media even works) from such a naive, singular action. That's all. I'm addressing the severity of the response to his action, not the criteria to be considered a racist.

And for fuck's sake, get over the personal insults thing. I told you last time I don't consider your bigotry a detriment to your argument (I think many people here are bigoted against Islam just like you). You've been calling me a racist up and down this thread, you insulted my wife, and you've been consistently hostile throughout this discussion, and I'm not whining about it every other response. You're the one that always turns these discussions into shit-slinging arguments, so deal with it.

I'm kinda surprised she's been alive this whole time.

To Kill a Mockingbird was the only book she ever wrote, I believe. That's always amazed me.
She just released a new book last year.

She didn't release it though, her publisher just took advantage of her state of health and published an unfinished draft of a book and called it a sequel to TKAM.

3208
That was pretty underwhelming. tbh it's more embarrassing for the guy...she obviously didn't give a shit about him.

It did have an anti-war message. The whole idea was that the reason he was so fucked up later in life (mentally) was because of Iraq.

Sort of, I guess. I can't think of a single other movie about Iraq or Afghanistan that didn't have the exact same message, and it was delivered along with badass shots of American military strength and a narrative about a good ol' boy just serving his country.
